Klaus
Hello, my name is Klaus. My animal id is #244023. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/18/2025.
Klaus is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is a sweet and social cat, however due to her potential for pet induced aggression, continues to display challenging behavior during interactions - and may struggle to connect appropriately with the public. She is extremely social, intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, stalking feet, and potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation/ petting-induced aggression, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further/potential) bite/scratch incidents.

My foster writes: Klaus is a loving cat who has white mittens and pink paws! He loves head scratches and making biscuits on you. He will greet you when you come home and rubs himself on you. He is also super friendly to strangers and adjusts very quickly in new homes. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A volunteer writes: Klaus was found in an empty apartment alone in a crate. She's been adorably determined to make up for this confusing start by showing the world her belly as she stretches her paws in every conceivable direction. Softly chirping as she regards us upside down, inviting people to visit is undoubtedly Klaus' strength as very few people can resist her cuteness. When it comes to what to make of their inevitable acceptances has left Klaus scratching her head a bit. We don't know too much about her life before, but we know she's learning, maybe even learning about pets. Klaus seems pretty sure that pets come in numbers that are required to stop at 3-4, sometimes two.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 2 adults Behavior toward strangers: He's friendly and will go up to them and rub himself on them but does not enjoy more than one pet from them Behavior toward children: Not sure, he hasn’t been around children Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Bites have not been reported to have broken skin at any point Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: High Other notes: Will randomly attack/bite your leg when walking by or standing. He will purr and make biscuits on your legs! Also he loves wet food and will be super affectionate when he hears the can lid being opened. He also gets the zoomies at night and is very easy to play with. And when you come home he will purr and run over to you :) Klaus does not like his stomach being touched or being picked up and will bite/scratch if you try!
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/19/26 FB79 Laying on his bed, Klaus is relaxed with his body neutral and his eyes soft when i approach and speak through the glass; when i start to open the kennel door he stands with an arched back,. hogh tail and lowers his head for pets. I pet all around his head/cheeks as he leans in for more however when i pet up his back his back fur rippled and his tail starts to sway. Hes super sweet and loved all the treats while enjoying more pets on his cheeks. 2/26/26 FB58 Klaus is showing consistent signs of pet induced aggression, rough play and high energy at this time. Klaus does not need socialization, these behaviors are likely to continue in a home environment and this is not an indication that Klaus is under socialized. They are a very smart and curious cat who may have never learned appropriate play and bite inhibition. They will need plenty of playtime and mental stimulation in their new home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Klaus was laying in her litterbox cleaning herself. As the door opened, she looked at the assessor with a neutral face and eyes, and forward ears. The assessor slowly offered their hand and Klaus stretched her head around, upside down and sniffed. She enjoyed head pets before she got up and came to the front of the kennel. She allowed all petting from head to tail while she stood at the front of the kennel curiously looking around the room with her tail high in the air. After a few moments, she stepped out of her kennel where the assessor picked her up to place her back in the kennel. She let out a meow combined with a low growl as she was lifted up. She was then placed back in the kennel with no issues as the interaction was ended. 12/13/26 Klaus was in her kennel as the assessor approached, body and face relaxed with her ears forward and her front paws placed neatly in front of her. Klaus made eye contact with a soft expression when spoken to and she began to knead her bed as the kennel door opened. Klaus tolerated petting along her head and body briefly before tilting her ears, tapping her tail up and down and turning her head to swat at the assessor's hand while hissing. Pick up was not attempted at this time. These are signs of petting induced aggression - not fear and stress. Klaus solicits attention and accepts petting but is currently showing signs of petting induced aggression. She has also been reported to play roughly. For these reasons we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home with adults only.
