Prince
Hello, my name is Prince. My animal id is #240612. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/31/2025.

Prince is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Prince has shown repeated leash biting during leashing and walks, including making contact with a handler’s wrist. He pulls hard on leash, jumps on kennel doors, hard stares at dogs, and barks while lunging toward other dogs in kennels. Prince has been highly social with staff, caretakers, and his previous fosters. He readily engages in enrichment games, enjoys various treats, and prefers plush squeaky toys. Medically, Prince is apparently healthy.

In foster care, he's shown just how special he is, calm, gentle, playful, and deeply affectionate once he feels safe. He settles in quickly, loves spending time with his people, and carries himself with a sweet, soulful presence that's impossible to forget. Prince doesn't ask for much. Just patience, love, and a place to belong. When given that, he gives his whole heart in return. He's not broken, not difficult-he's simply a wonderful dog who hasn't had his chance yet. Prince is ready for his forever home. Ready to be loved. Ready to be chosen. Could you be the one to give this good boy the happy ending he deserves? My Foster Writes: Prince is a sweet, loving boy who just wants to be close to people at all times. He is fully housebroken, does fine in his crate when left alone and overnight, and walks well on leash but does pull at times. He will "sit", "lay down", "give paw", and "wait" when asked. He is very food motivated, and has high potential to be trained on additional commands, we believe. He needs additional work on his manners and impulse control - he jumps when he gets excited, which is often. If he could choose how to spend all of his time, it would be on the couch next to his people. Volunteer gushing over me! - 01/03/26: I love Prince! He is a very excited dog with lots of energy. His confidence and joy is contagious. Price is also very smart - he knows sit, paw, and lay down. He probably knows even more tricks but I didn't quiz him too much on the walk. Pulled a bit to get outside but calmed down once we hit the sidewalk. Sat with me on the bench, even trying to climb onto my lap (he is so awkward, it's funny). Such a lovely dog. 12/21/26: Very happy and energetic dog. Needs some leash manners (will jump out of excitement). Happy boy who will try to cuddle you, but doesn't know what cuddling is just yet.
My medical notes are...

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 11/02/25 Prince is introduced at the gate to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Prince is slow to approach the gate, appearing nervous. He will displace, sniffing away from the gate and must be coaxed over to the gate where the female dog is standing behind. Prince is chattering, displaying paw raises along the gate line and will walk away willingly. Prince continues to displace as he continues to sniff away from the gate, appearing to seek out an exit. Prince is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend that Prince is placed in an adult-only home at this time due to his low threshold Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Prince be placed with a New Hope placement partner who can provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow him to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Prince to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Prince presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Prince is noted to jump up on handlers often in a social manner. To reduce jumping, reinforce calm behavior by rewarding Prince when all four paws are on the ground. Teach alternative behaviors like “sit” for attention and use consistent redirection during greetings. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Anxiety: Prince is noted in kennel to display heavy panting and hyper salivation.Provide calming enrichment such as puzzle toys, soft music, and scent items. Maintain a predictable routine and consider anxiety-reducing tools if symptoms persist. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Barrier frustration: In the care center Prince is noted to display kennel reactivity when passing other dogs in their kennels. Training should center on increasing space from triggers, reinforcing attention and calm behaviors, and using controlled setups to gradually desensitize her to nearby dogs. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-biting: Prince is noted to leash bite with handlers while on walks and is not able to refocus with toys offered to him. Training should emphasize reducing arousal before exiting the kennel, using high-value food rewards for redirection, and incorporating structured engagement exercises to build alternative behaviors that interrupt the leash-biting pattern. Please see the handout on leash biting.
