Pixie Stix
Hello, my name is Pixie Stix. My animal id is #212823. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 5 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/11/2025.
Pixie Stix is currently at risk for behavior reasons. She was surrendered to ACC after being abandoned in an apartment. The finders kept her in their home for a few months and they indicate that she is shy around strangers, sometimes barking and growling at them, and is friendly with other dogs. During her stay, she has been social with handlers but has displayed dog reactivity and has engaged in leash biting and has lunged towards staff when kennel fighting. This has made it difficult to safely handler her in care as she has made contact with handlers hand in an attempt to leash bite. Medically, she is overweight.

Pixie Stix is a 4-year-old medium mixed breed with a heart as big as her energy! She was found as a stray and cared for by a kind finder for about three months before arriving at the shelter. Now, she's ready to find a forever home that will give her the love and structure she needs. My Ideal Home Pixie Stix would thrive in an active home where she can get plenty of exercise, training, and mental stimulation. She loves to play and will benefit from a family that enjoys walks, games, and interactive activities. Because she's still learning her manners, a home without young children would be best. Good with Kids? Pixie Stix has no prior experience with children, so a home with older kids who can respect her space and help with her training would be ideal. Good with Other Dogs? Pixie Stix has lived with other dogs before and is generally friendly and outgoing with them. She would likely enjoy a home with another playful canine companion, but slow introductions are always recommended. Leash Manners Pixie Stix walks well on a leash and doesn't pull! However, she has a fun quirk-she gets excited when she sees pigeons and may try to chase them. With consistent training, she'll learn to focus on her handler instead. Fun Fact! Pixie Stix is a toy enthusiast! She loves gripping and playing with toys, often wiggling her whole body with excitement while she plays! Pixie Stix is ready to bring joy, playfulness, and endless love to the right home. Could that be yours? Come meet her today!

Summary:: 2/20/25: Pixie Stix does not approach the gate to greet the other dog. She sniffs around the pen actively avoiding the spot the other dog is in. Handler is able to coax her forward and when she sniffs the other dog she tenses and growls.
Summary (6):: 4/15/25: As Pixie Stix was being brought out of the room, he was reactive towards the pop up crates. As a staff member stood in between the pop up crates, Pixie Stix jumped up and nearly bit their hand. 4/14/25: Pixie Stix is at the front loose with a loose and wiggly body, she is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. Pixie Stix is brought to the street and she relieves self and walks beside handler pulling mild to moderate. Pixie Stix spots a dog on the other side of a fence, she is tense bodied and fixates to the dog, leaning forward. Some leash pressure is applied as the handler continues to walk and Pixie headwhips and at the leash with an open mouth. She then stops and keeps walking sniffing around and walking alongside handler. She stares at things that pass by on the street with a tense body, when handler applies tension to the leash as they continue walking forward she turns and grabs the leash briefly and continues walking. She spots a dog across the street and stares at them with a tense body but continues walking with no leash biting. Pixie Stix suddenly charges forward towards a pigeon and jumps up high as it flies away. She pulls hard back into the building and is returned to her crate without issue.
Summary (7):: 3/24/25: Pixie Stix is standing in her crate with a loose wiggly body as hander approaches. She starts to duck her head down and back away while the handler tries to leash her. She is able to be distracted with a treat. Once leashed, she pulls out of her crate and is taken downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, she would pull hard ahead and would lunge and jump toward people and dogs that would pass by. She would become tense when she saw a bird or bike and would lunge forward as she got closer to them. On the way back, there was a person in a store vacuuming by their entrance door. Pixie became tense and lunged and jumped towards the door and vacuum. She is able to be redirected with treats. She pulls on the way back to her crate and enters with no issues 3/6/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Pixie Stix is leash biting. 3/3/25- A volunteer was walking Pixie Stix on the street. A K9 behavior was walking on the other side of the street and witness Pixie Stix leash biting. She started to escalate and was going up higher on the leash biting at it and tugging it. The volunteer reported they tried treats and a toy but couldn’t redirect her. K9 behavior staff that was witnessing it had a dog with them and couldn’t assist. They called another K9 handler to come help. The volunteer while waiting for the light to change made the leash high and taunt around Pixie’s neck to prevent her from biting at the leash. When they crossed to the other side of the street Pixie started to pass out and K9 staff told her to loosen the leash. The other K9 handler arrived and assisted the volunteer. 2/28/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Pixie Stix is leash biting and growling. 10/22/24: Pixie Stix is lying at the back of kennel with a soft body as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and comes to the front of kennel, being picked up with ease. Pixie Stix walks with a loose leash to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). She is social with handlers throughout her time in the room and will lean into handlers, placing their head in their lap, and accepts petting along head, neck, and body, with a soft frame. Pixie Stix is returned to kennel safely.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Pixie Stix is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Pixie Stix.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Pixie Stix has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Pixie Stix should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Pixie Stix is noted to not be house trained, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Basic Manners: Pixie's finder states that she will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Pixie's finder states that she will hard bark and growl towards strangers. It is important to move slowly with Pixie, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety: Pixie's finder states that she will become anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Pixie has been observed to lunge towards birds, dogs, people, bikes and other stimuli. After reacting to stimulus Pixie has been observed to whip her head and begin to bite the leash. Pixie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Pixie is observed to jump up and mouth the leash. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
