Other Notes:: According to Dodya's previous owner(s), Dodya has spent most of life in the home so only knows how to use wee wee pads, and does not walk well on a leash due to having minimal experience of this.

Summary:: Dodya has shown fearful behavior during her time at the care center, including thrashing, vocalizing, and baulking when handlers attempt to walk her on leash. She has also been avoidant of handlers once out of kennel. Out of concern for her stress levels, a handling assessment is not conducted.

Summary (7):: 9/21/26: Dodya is sitting in her kennel as handler approaches. She is eager to come out of kennel and begins to jump and try to shove he way out of the kennel as the handler clips on her collar. She is then able to be picked up and is taken to the behavior room. In the room, she has a neutral frame as she explores around. She is comfortable approaching the handlers but has no interest in treats. She would back away and try to avoid being picked up to be taken back to her kennel. Once picked up, she is able to be returned back and placed back into her kennel with no issues. 09/20/26 (PM): Dodya is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. She retreats to the other side of her double shoreline, so the handler closes the transfer door and approaches from the other side. Dodya stands in the back corner, not looking at the handler. The handler clips a collar to Dodya in kennel and carries her to the office. In the office, Dodya walks around on a very short drag leash. She often steps on it and startles herself. She follows one handler around readily, but as she explores, avoids approach from other handlers. At some point, she comes towards the handler again, and the handler is able to pick her up and return her to kennel. The handler unclips the collar in kennel to allow Dodya to settle. 9/20/26: Dodya is siting in her kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. She is able to be to leashed with ease and then begins to scratch at the leash. She is able to come out of her kennel with ease and when the handler begins to walk, she begins to thrash and vocalize due to not liking the leash pressure. When the handler attempts to jog, she then baulks to ground and refuses to walk. The handler then takes her back the kennel and places her inside. She is then comfortable receiving chin scratches from another handler as the other goes to get a collar. She is able to collared with ease and is then carried to the behavior room. In the room, she is comfortable exploring around and would slowly approach the handlers in the room to sniff them. She is then able to be picked up and carried back to her kennel with no issues.

We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Dodya's fearful behavior in the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Dodya has shown fearful behavior at the care center, particularly around being walked on leash. She has also been avoidant of handling. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: During her time at the care center, Dodya has shown fearful behavior, including thrashing and baulking on leash, and showing avoidance/moving away when interacting with staff. It is important to always go slow with Dodya; she should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be her choice to approach a new person or thing. She would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. House soiling: Dodya's previous owner(s) report that Dodya is not housetrained, but also noted that she uses pee pads in the house. Dodya will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling.
