Animal Profile

Blue Tang

Hello, my name is Blue Tang. My animal id is #244979. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/5/2026.

Blue Tang is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Blue Tang arrived as an owner surrender via NYPD. Blue Tang's previous owner noted he is high energy, playful, and outgoing. Upon his arrival Blue Tang was noted to be fearful but allowed all handling for his medical exam. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Blue Tang has been showing fearful defensive behaviors and increased kennel reactivity. Blue Tang has been reported to be difficult to handle safely at times; when clipping his leash to be returned to kennel, Blue Tang has been observed to turn and snap at the leash. He also has been observed to be kennel fighting- pulling towards occupied kennels and hard barking. When in play yard with staff, Blue Tang has been social, allowed contact, and is receptive to treats. Medically, Blue Tang is being treated for CIRDC.

Blue Tang is a large, lovable grey boy estimated to be 3-6 years old. He's social, affectionate, and friendly with everyone he meets-adults, kids, and strangers alike! Blu is playful with familiar dogs too! This high-energy guy loves running and playing with toys. He knows sit and paw and would benefit from continued training, especially leash skills, as he can pull a bit on walks. Blu is partially house-trained and does best with a consistent routine. Blu is gentle with handling, allows grooming, and has no known medical issues or bite history. He came to the shelter because his previous owner didn't have enough time for him. Blu is now looking for a family who can give him the attention, activity, and love he deserves.

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Moderate Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: None Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Moderately social Call over: Approaches handler readily Sociability comments: Takes treats hard, sniffing around the room, attempts to mouth leash when the handler picks it up Soft handling: Accepts contact Exuberant handling: Over aroused Comments: Head whips towards the handler during exuberant contact Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler readily, begins jumping up and biting the leash Knock Knock comments: Approaches handler readily Toy Toy comments: Grips light and engages with toy, grips firm, becomes tense and hovers over the toy when the handler and assess-a-hand gets closer

Summary:: 1/17/26: Blue Tang greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. He pushes his nose into the gate.

Summary (6):: 1/20/26: Blue Tang is observed to kennel fight when returning to kennel, he is kept on a short leash however is pulling hard and hard-barking at occupied kennels. 1/18/26: Staff reported that Blue Tang turned and snapped at the leash when returning to kennel and did not allow handler to clip the leash. He did not allow the handler to use the hook to remove the leashes. Another handler quickly took the leash off over his head by distracting with treats. 01/18/26: Blue Tang is at the front of his kennel laying down as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the yard for dog-dog interactions. He walks with handler and accepts treats with hard pressure so handler tosses treats for Blue. He walks with handler and will sit for treats, once outside he is brought into the play yard for dog interactions, notes on these interactions are available in his behavior assessment. Once complete he is brought back inside and due to heavy foot traffic and dogs in the hallway handler has him sit with treats and wait a while for the people and dogs to pass which helps in distracting him. In the elevator he allows brief pets with a loose body and he returns to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 01/14/26: Blue Tang is at the center of his crate as handler approaches, he is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. Along the way Blue Tang accepts treats from handler with hard pressure, he walks for a while with handler and pulls moderately. Blue Tang walks past people and dogs without issue and stops to relieve himself while outside. After a bit he is brought back inside and brought back to his crate, he returns without issue. 1/7/25: Blue Tang is easily leashed and removed from kennel, and then other end of leash is clipped to harness and loop end removed from neck without issue. He pulls with mild to moderate pressure off and on on the way to the back yard, and is able to be maneuvered around and stop when needed to avoid obstacles in the hallway - no reaction to passing other dogs in pop up crates. He relieves himself upon entering the yard, and explores the pen, marking occasionally. Another dog enters the adjacent pen and he watches but is able to be redirected; takes treats softly and allows for pets on head/neck/body without issue. When leaving the yard, he pulls with moderate pressure and walks directly back to his pop up crate, entering immediately without prompting. An additional treat is given through the kennel bars and the interaction is ended. 1/6/25 (Assessment Walks): Blue Tang is lying down and then stands up with a loose body. He is leashed, but becomes tangled. As a second handler holds him in place by his harness, the handler properly leashes Blue and continues the walk. Initially, Blue pulls hard, but after relieving himself, Blue eases some tension, and pulls moderately. He also doesn't show any interest in dogs or passersby; he, however, sniffs a crate as a dog is present. Blue is brought in for his assessment (see assessment notes), but it is shorten as Blue ran around the room and began leash biting. As the handler leashes him, Blue leash bites again, but the assessor tosses treats at him, and he stops. The handler then returns Blue to kennel with ease. 1/5/26: It is reported that Blue Tang has been growling towards handlers while in his crate.

Date of intake:: 1/5/2026

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Blue Tang so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Blue's previous owner states that he will have an accident a few times a week. Blue is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Blue has been obsvered to become tense and hover over toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Blue's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness: Blue has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Blue to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Blue has been obsvered to become very tense and hard stare towards the handler when they held his collar. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Blue to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Blue has been reported to growl at handlers while in his crate. It is important to move slowly with Blue, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Arousal/ Leash Biting: Blue has been obsvered to jump up and bite the leash when the handler picked up. During his assessment Blue began running around the office and biting the dragline. This behavior was not able to be redirected easily. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Blue to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
