Animal Profile

Castin

Hello, my name is Castin. My animal id is #200854. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 7 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/20/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Castin is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: This cat displays fearful behaviors I have potential behavioral challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me Due to prior owner history, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home Castin tolerates attention and some petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home Please check here for updated adoption hours. A volunteer writes: Enjoying his sun bath in what can only be described as a "big stretch" with paws extended as far as they could go, Castin seems to have never met a stranger. He got right up to for a delightful sniff and snuggle combo that left me trying to think of ways to become his best friend. We cuddled for a little while and I quickly learned that Castin is a play enthusiast! Good thing I had a pipe cleaner feather ready. Although, once I showed it to him, he carried it off to the corner of his condo before realizing we could actually play together. Interactive playtime was an absolute hit and time spent with Castin feels like being at the very best kind of party. He makes his new friends feel welcomed, seen, and loved for exactly who they are, which is what we want Castin to find too.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/24/24 Hunched on top of cat den, body and face tense, tail curled around feet and pupils dilated. He leans forward to sniff the scratcher tool when offered and tolerates petting while turning his head to remain focused on the tool with a tense expression. His ears remain forward and he eats all the treats offered. He appears curious but unsure at this time. FB1261 5/29/24 Sitting upright in front of kennel, body and face tense, ears forward and tail wrapped around feet. He tolerates petting along his head and back with the scratcher tool while leaning in gently, closing his eyes then tensing further and raising his paw to playfully bat at the scratcher. He appears curious but unsure. Needs more time to adjust. He eats all the greenies offered. FB1261 6/6/24 FB1261 In cat den upon approach. I leave him some treats and speak to him softly but he prefers to remain hidden at this time. I do not push hands-on interaction to reduce the chance of instilling more fear. 6/11/24 FB1261 At front of kennel today, rubbing against kennel door, tail raised, back arched and face relaxed. He reaches out towards me with claws extended (in a demanding way, these are not swats) and he eats all the treats offered. He leans in for petting with the scratcher tool while simultaneously turning his head all around and batting/chomping/nipping at the scratcher tool. Gastin is a friendly and social boy and is showing pretty clear signs of overstimulation at this time. He wants attention but does not have a high threshold for hands-on petting today. Will continue to monitor a bit longer but if overstimulation signs remain consistent (and are not a sign of FAS) then he will no longer need daily socialization. 6/15/24 FB58 Castin is showing consistent signs of overstimulation at this time. Castin does not need socialization, these behaviors are likely to continue in a home environment and this is not an indication that Castin is under socialized. They are a very smart and curious cat who may be sensitive to hands-on stimuli. They will need plenty of playtime and mental stimulation in their new home. 5/30/25 FB61 Castin is showing consistent signs of overstimulation at this time. They do not need socialization, these behaviors are likely to continue in a home environment and this is not an indication that this cat is under socialized. They are a cat who may be sensitive to physical or environmental stimuli. They will benefit from plenty of non-contact, interactive playtime and mental stimulation in their new home. 6/22/25 Vol. Castin was in his bed, trying to grab a pipe cleaner which had been tied to the door of his kennel. I moved the pipe cleaner to the other side so he could reach it. He played with it for a while. I opened the smaller door and gave him Squeeze Up. He ate it rapidly. He allowed me to pet him a few times, then he went back to the other side to sit behind his bed. He is very playful.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Sweet,Playful,People oriented,Curious,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Very high energy level,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: On 5.22.24 at 1pm Castin had a scratch incident. Client stated that her mother was visiting the house. When she came over Castin started to act more aggressive lunging and growling at the owner and her mother. When the mother was attempting to leave the household Castin ran toward the mother lunged and scratched the mother on her left arm and broke skin. After this Castin started to growl and hiss, but before he could do anything further the owner and her mother locked themselves in a sperate room. Based off of his reported behaviors in his previous home, Castin appears to a high energy, fearful cat that struggles with strangers and will hiss at new people, and hisses, growls, swats, and nips at children. There may be a chance that Castin resorted to fearful aggression due to the owner's mother visiting. Although she may be known to him, extended time in the home or a change to his expected routine paired with uneasiness around strangers or new people may have triggered him to act offensively to a perceived threat, and he may have redirected towards his family as well. Castin is also reported to be very high energy and has shown signs of potential overstimulation during his evaluation as his body remains tensed and tail low with the base raised, and turns to look back at the scratcher tool used to touch his back and side, and swats once when the tool is pulled away.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Castin is reported to hiss, growl, swat, and nips at children and at other cats. Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Castin would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Castin is in his den but comes to the front when the door is opened with ears forward and a slightly tense face and body. His tail remains low but he leans forward to sniff the hand offered to him, and while a little wary, tolerates pets on his head and cheeks with the assessor's hand. When the assessor offers him treats, he begins to eat them but turns back each time he is pet with the scratcher tool along his back and side and tenses before shifting away. He then moves back and sits on top of his den, again turning to watch the tool when he is pet along his side and raises a paw, swatting the tool once as it is pulled away from him. Pick up is not attempted. Castin was standing in front of his kennel as the assessor approached him for his re-eval, ears forward and tail raised. Castin rubbed against the kennel door when spoken to and he remained calm as the kennel door opened. Castin allowed petting along his head and body while leaning in, tensing his body slightly and then turning his head to watch the assessor's hand with a tense expression before giving it a head-butt. Castin allowed the assessor to lift him and place him back down with tilted ears and stiff legs. Castin is a social and energetic boy who has the potential to become overstimulated. 5/23/25 Castin was sitting upright in the front of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face relaxed, ears forward and tail curled lightly around his feet. Castin vocalized softly when spoken to and he tensed with his ears slightly tilting as the kennel door opened. Castin tolerated petting along his head and back while flattening his ears further, turning his head and hissing. Castin appears to be displaying conflicted behavior during his return to our care center. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Due to prior owner history (see separate notes) and a bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home with adults only.
