Animal Profile

Uzzy

Hello, my name is Uzzy. My animal id is #224374. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/11/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Uzzy is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Uzzy has been fearful at the care center, avoiding interaction and becoming tense and whale eyeing during an assessment. He has at times been difficult to leash, trying to push out of the kennel and retreating when leash is presented. In one instance, he escaped his kennel and was loose in the hallway, biting the handlers hand when they went to re-leash him. The bite resulted in two puncture wounds. He has also displayed some resource guarding, becoming tense and growling when staff attempted to remove treats off the ground near him. Medically, Uzzy has CIRDC.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Uzzy arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Uzzy has been observed to be very fearful. Noted to have a tense low body, tail tail and whale eyes when approached by handlers. In kennel Uzzy has been observed to escalate to snapping at handlers. While in care, Uzzy darted out of kennel and became loose in the hallway. As the handler was attempting to releash Uzzy he jumped up and bit and released their hand. This bite resulted in two puncture wounds on their knuckles. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary:: Allowed handling

Summary:: Tense/whale eyes, urinated upon entering exam room, tries to flee, frozen for exam and tasks

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Uzzy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During intake handler attempted to pick up treats off the ground after tossing a few treats in a different direction. Uzzy then growled and became tense. We recommend that Uzzy be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in their future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Uzzy's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: Uzzy was fearful during his exam and urinated on himself. During his assessment Uzzy was observed to have a tense low body, tucked tal, and whale eyes when approached by handlers. During his stay in the care center Uzzy has been observed to escalate to snapping at handlers when they go to leash him. It is important to move slowly with Uzzy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
