Animal Profile

Linda

Hello, my name is Linda. My animal id is #194674. I am a desexed female tortoiseshell cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/20/2024, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Linda is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/16/24 In den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She remains hidden as I offer some treats and I do not attempt hands-on interaction at this time to avoid creating a negative association. Hopefully she investigates them later when she feels more safe. 4/26/24 In her den completely hidden from view, I don't want to push her as I know she is very unhappy and scared being here but I place a tray with a high value food near the den opening. She doesn't move in the den but I close the door and leave her to eat it when she is alone and spray some feliway, may benefit from some gaba just to see if that will help her settle just a little while she is here. 4/30/24 In her den, continues to remain hidden from view. I place a tray with squeeze up and dry treats near the den opening. When I check back later, she hasn't touched the tray.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent,Timid,Skittish,Shy

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Linda was previously a working cat in her previous owner's cabinet shop.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Linda would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Linda is in her den completely hidden from view aside from her hind end. She cannot be coaxed out when offered treats or when spoken softly. When the assessor slowly introduced the scratcher tool and attempts to pet her back, she shifts away completely. THe assessor then attempts to adjust the den's cage cover and she darts out of the den and to the other side of her double with a low and tense body, where she ducks her head and presses it to the door. She then climbs the door with her front paws poking her head into the top corner as if looking for a way to get out. When she moves away from the door, the assessor again offers the scratcher tool slowly one last time and she hisses and swats multiple times before darting back into her den. Upon re-eval, Linda is still displaying fearful behaviors here in shelter and has not opened up to interactions and/or pettings/handling. Upon approach, Linda is in her den out of sight and she lets out a harsh hiss as the assessor lifts up the den cover for a better view; she is laying with her tail tightly wrapped around her body and eyes now dilated. When the assessor slowly introduces the scratcher tool at the den opening she low hisses and begins to grumble. As the assessor attempts to move it closer she hisses and swats at the tool as well as continues to low grumble. Linda is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
