Cozine
Hello, my name is Cozine . My animal id is #253497. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/1/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCozine is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Cozine has shown the potential for sociable behaviors with handlers, but quickly becomes conflicted. He is easy to remove from the kennel, briefly leans into petting, but flinches when touched. Cozine has escalated to hard barking, growling, and hard staring at handlers. During walks, he has stopped and hard stared at other dogs, but has been receptive to being redirected with treats. Medically, Cozine has CIRDC, dermatitis, and alopecia.

Cozine has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has allowed minimal handling. He has displayed a loose and wiggly body when familiar handlers approach to remove him from the kennel, but he has escalated to hard barking, growling, and hard staring at unfamiliar handlers or strangers. On walks, he has fixated on other dogs, but has been able to be redirected with treats. We recommend placement in an adult-only home with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate Cozine's behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Due to this, a handling assessment could not be conducted.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/04/26 Due to Cozine's observed dog reactivity, he is introduced to a fake dog. He approaches the fake dog with a square frame and high-flagged tail and will sniff along the dog. He disengages after a minute and his body loosens slightly. When he reapproaches, he mounts the fake dog. Will revisit.
Summary (7):: 05/19/26: Cozine is standing at the front of his kennel and attempts to push out of the kennel with his head as the handler leashes him. He is then brought toward the play yard for an enrichment outing. While walking up the ramp, he stops to relieve himself and remains fixated on a neighboring dog approaching down the ramp. As handlers move Cozine to the side to allow the other team to pass safely, he becomes extremely tense, begins growling, and pulls heavily toward the other dog. Due to the escalation in reactivity, handlers redirect and escort him through the non-ISO exit route. Once inside the play yard, Cozine is allowed to continue relieving himself and exploring. As another dog passes nearby, he again becomes stiff-bodied and fixated on the passing dog until the dog is fully out of sight. When the outing is complete, Cozine is returned to his kennel safely without further issues. 5/8/26: Cozine is sitting on his bed as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front and is able to be leashed with ease. He is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would walk ahead of the handler with a neutral body and would become tense as he would hard stare at dogs. He is able to be redirected with a squeaker and would take a few treats. He has no reactions to people that would pass by and is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 5/7/26: Cozine greeted handler at front of kennel with a loose and wiggly body. He was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. Handler took Cozine for a street walk where he mostly walked in front of handler with a neutral body. When he saw a dog he would stop and stare and handler could redirect him with treats. He pulled hard on his walk. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/5/26 D 2 Fake dog note): Cozine is brought to the yard for a dog to dog assessment with a fake dog. He immediately displays a stiff, squared body with a high tail and slight hackles. He approaches directly, circling and sniffing the dog. He then escalates to mounting while maintaining stiffness, demonstrating tension and poor social regulation. See Dog to Dog note for more information. 5/3/26: Cozine is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, is easily leashed and walked to the office. Cozine in the office is neutral bodied with the handler, leaning into petting but flinching when touched. Cozine when other staff enter the room will hard bark, growl and hard stare at them until coaxed over. At some point Cozine begins to pace and continue to growl intermidently so he is taken outside briefly to use the bathroom before being taken back to kennel with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Cozone's defensive escalations and potential for defensive aggression, we recommend that he be placed in an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Cozine has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Cozine is seen body blocking and hovering over a toy while in care. We recommend that Cozine be left alone while playing with toys, Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Cozine mouth to get him to drop any toy a exchange with another toy would be recommended. Please see handout on Possession guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. please see handout on BASIC MANNERS Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Cozine has escalated to hard barking, growling, and hard staring at handlers. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward-based training is advised when introducing or exposing Sasha to new and unfamiliar situations. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: During walks, Cozine has been observed to fixate on other dogs. On leash while in the behavior office, he hard barks and growls. Cozine may need positive reinforcement and reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Anxiety Cozine appears anxious at the care center, heavey panting during his assessment. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on ANXIETY.
