Animal Profile

Flames

Hello, my name is Flames. My animal id is #228101. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/28/2025.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Flames is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She has been updated to a New Hope Only behavior determination and no longer allows petting or handling. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: Flames tolerates some attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to an adult-only home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: Flames was left in a hotel room with another cat and a turtle, but we don't know much else about her life before. What we do know, however, is that the shelter has been a considerable shift and admittedly not the smoothest one. The world is big and, to Flames at least, so is the shelter. To make it more manageable, Flames has taken to staying in her den. Mostly keeping to herself, we've seen Flames make efforts to sniff new toys but she hasn't yet been much of a fan of our offers of treats and pets. Her ground has felt so unsteady recently and while I whole heartedly validate her assumption that yes, the world is quite big, we'd love for Flames to also see that the world is so much better with a friend by your side. If you think you can be a friend to dear Flames, please come and visit her at the Queens Care Center. Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

During intakes the cat was very fearful, allowed to picked placed into the kennel.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Flames was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. During intakes the cat was very fearful, allowed to picked placed into the kennel.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/13/25 FB79 Inside of her den, Flames can be heard hissing and low growling when i open her kennel door; when i lift the den cover she is curled up in the back of her den with wide eyes and her tail tightly wrapped around her body. She hisses again when the pointer tool is slowly brought close to her but does tolerate petting on her head, cheek as well as down her back as her eyes dilate, her ears tilt and she backs herself further into the corner. 6/15/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Flames has wide eyes and her ears forward but she starts to lip lick when i lift the den cover and she shifts her body wrapping her tail tightly around her body as she moves into the corner. Flames doesn't care for treats when offered and when i slowly put my hand in the den she hisses and continues to lip lick. 6/18/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense. She leans forward to sniff the scratcher tool when offered, however when petting is attempted she leans away with flattened ears and hisses once loudly. She does not show interest in the treats offered during our session and although she sniffs the catnip toy offered she remains too focused on me to play with it as the kennel door remains open. Nervous girl, needs more time to adjust. 6/20/25 FB79 Today, Flames displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. 6/25/25 FB61 Inside den upon approach, body and face completely hidden from view. She is hunched in her den when I lift the den cover, body and face tense with pupils very dilated. She hisses when offered treats and she is not comfortable enough to leave her den to investigate. I speak to her softly before ending the session. Needs more time. A sensitive and tiny cat. 6/27/25 FB79 Such a sweet scared girly. Flames can be heard inside of her den hissing when i open the kennel door; she has wide eyes, forward ears and her tail wrapped when i lift the den cover. Flames has no reaction when i pet the top of her head as well as her cheeks and even starts to lean in sideways for more chin and cheek rubs while slow blinks. She tolerated a few pets down and around her body before hissing again. 7/3/25 FB58 UTW and much more hissy today than she has been lately. She is still tolerant of pets on her head and cheeks but I don't push her today for pets as she clearly doesn't feel well. 7/08/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, hissing and peering out at me with a neutral expression. She appears a bit conflicted. She continues to hiss and watch me as I offer treats and when I leave a catnip toy. Although she doesn't eat the treats, she does stretch her neck out a bit to sniff the toy. Her hisses don't match her body language and face exatcly... will attempt petting next time. -GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Flames would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/31/25 Inside of her den, Flames has big dilated eyes when the den cover was lifted for a better view; she flinches when the scratcher tool was brought into the den but leaned in to sniff with a very tense, hunched body. Flames tolerated all pets on her body as well as on her head and cheeks while remaining very still/frozen with wide eyes. Flames started to lip lick when the assessor reached in to offer treats and wrapped her tail tightly around her body with her ears now startling to tilt. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 7/1/25 Upon re-eval, Flames is in her den and hidden from view - when cover lifted, she hisses when she sees the assessor but accepts pets on her head and cheeks with the scratcher tool, remaining slightly tense. The assessor then slowly offers out treats in their hand and she leans forward to sniff before they are placed in front of her in the den. She allows pets on her head and cheeks as she sniffs the treats and eats some. Pick up is not attempted. 7/17/25 Although tolerant of petting initially, Flames no longer allows petting or handling. Flames was in her cat den as the assessor approached, body and face tense and eyes alert and wide open. Flames made eye contact when spoken to and she hissed and lunged in her den as the kennel door opened. Flames reached her paw out and swatted the assess-a-hand hard as it reached towards her. Pick up was not attempted at this time. Flames is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
