Charm
Hello, my name is Charm. My animal id is #250820. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 4/21/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCharm is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Charm has been highly social with handlers and engaged in play with other select dogs during playgroup sessions, he is displaying a concerning level of arousal and kennel stress as his length of stay progresses. In his kennel, he is jumping up and spinning. Charm has intermittently been leash biting and thrashing when taken out of the kennel, kennel fighting as he exits the kennel room, and mouthing at handlers/staffs hands, has nipped at handlers' chests, leaving red marks. Due to these concerns, it has become increasingly difficult to walk Charm. Medically, Charm is apparently healthy.

Charm was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is mostly unknown. Charm initially was fearful with leashing but tolerated having his collar clipped. Once out of the kennel, he is loose and wiggly during interactions, engaging in play with toys and readily soliciting attention. Charm was returned by a trial adopter due to being mouthy and reactive to other dogs. He has been observed to jump up and mouth handlers/staff's hands and has recently begun to leash bite and occasionally thrash. He is now jumping up and grabbing onto clothing or onto a handler's person. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Charm be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope rescue partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Meet Charm! Charm was surrendered when his owner could no longer care for him and is now looking for a fresh start. He is a social, affectionate, and very people oriented dog who enjoys being where his humans are. In the shelter, he comes forward readily, leans into attention, and shows a playful, engaged personality. He can get very excited during interaction and tends to jump up often, but he remains friendly and eager to connect. My Ideal Home Charm will do best in an adult home that can provide consistency, daily activity, and structure around impulse control. He is active and thrives with a routine that includes exercise, training, and enrichment to keep his mind and body busy. Good with Other Pets? Charm shows strong reactivity on leash toward dogs and other outdoor triggers including bikes, cars, and small animals. He can lunge and bark when overstimulated, so he will need managed walks and a controlled environment. At this time, he is best suited as the only pet or with very careful, structured introductions if appropriate. Good with Kids? Not recommended for children due to high excitement levels, leash reactivity, and difficulty settling in stimulating environments. Things to Know Charm is an affectionate and energetic dog who enjoys companionship and being involved in daily life. He can be a strong puller on leash and becomes easily overstimulated outdoors. He is also sensitive to loud noises and may show destructive behaviors when anxious or under stimulated. On the positive side, he is comfortable with handling, grooming, and routine care, and he responds well to attention and engagement. With structure and consistent training, he has strong potential to improve his impulse control and settle into a stable routine. Fun Fact When Charm is comfortable, his name fits perfectly. He turns into a goofy, affectionate shadow who just wants to be near his person and soak up all the attention he can get. Charm is enrolled in our Shelter Scholar program and is working hard to become a calmer, more confident pup on the leash. He can get overwhelmed when he encounters other dogs or distractions during walks, but through his training he is learning to refocus and look to his handler for guidance. With consistent practice and positive reinforcement, Charm is making real strides one walk at a time.

Summary:: Charm arrived at the care centers as an owner surrender but is noted to have no experience with other dogs. Charm has displayed social interest and playful behavior with multiple dogs (male and female) at the care center. He will often approach dogs with loose body language, play bows, whining, and bouncy movement, and has engaged in mutual chase, role reversal, and appropriate breaks during play. Charm has shown the ability to play successfully with both male and female dogs and has participated in healthy interactions involving reciprocal play and disengagement. At times, Charm can become exuberant and physically forward during interactions, especially with dogs that are less interested in play or become overwhelmed by his energy. He has displayed behaviors such as jumping onto other dogs, vocalizing, becoming frustrated at barriers, and stiffening briefly during high arousal moments. Charm has also shown some conflicted body language during introductions, including raised hackles, stiffness, and widened eyes, particularly when navigating more intense or excitable dogs. Despite this, Charm has demonstrated the ability to soften, re-engage appropriately, and continue social interaction successfully with guidance and management. Overall, Charm appears to be a social, playful dog who would likely benefit from continued introductions to appropriately matched dogs that can tolerate his energetic play style. He may do best with dogs who enjoy active play and with adopters who can help support polite social interactions and ongoing social skills development to improve his confidence with other dogs. Dog to Dog interaction notes with detail can be requested upon request.
Summary (4):: 7/5/26 (playgroup): Charm is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He has a loose frame and will take a treat from the handler's hand as they leash him. He will then pull moderately out of kennel the wrong way but is easily redirected with treats and he will then gallop out of the room, pulling moderately. He is brought to the play yard where he will pull hard towards the gate. Once his collar is clipped with a drag leash, he is able to greet the dog through the gate. Charm is then brought in the yard on leash and eventually will engage in play. Their leashes become tangled a few times and the handlers are able to safely untangle them. Charm is introduced to another male dog in a separate yard and will play with him. (see dog-dog for more info) He is then leashed and brought back inside. Charm will rub his back on the wall so the handler removes his harness. He will lay down a few times once in the Care Center so the handler clips his collar with their leash and then he will get up and walk back to kennel on a loose leash. He is secured safely.
Summary (5):: 7/4: A handler reported that when we were taking Charm out, he was barking when leashed and pulling hard once out of the kennel. When reaching outside and once the handler and Charm exited the gate, Charm looked up at the handler and quickly jumped up high onto them and nipped their lower chest area. This did leave a little red mark but no broken skin. Charm still attempted to jump up on the handler through the walk, but they were able to toss treats quickly enough before he did. The handler walking Charm did note that the day before (7/3) they had to assist another handler with getting Charm back into his kennel due to the intensity of his kennel fighting as he was walked through SDA. Charm jumped up on the handler assisting when they called to him, and he nipped their wrist in the process. 7/3/26: Charm is noted on the whiteboard to thrash and leash bite when taken out of kennel and will spin in his kennel 7/2/26: On the white board Charm is noted to jump, mouth at handler's hands, and spin in kennel. 7/2/26: Charm is reported to be constantly jumping and mouthing at handlers hands while being taken out of kennel to go outside for a walk. He is reported to settle and take treats when he gets outside. 07/01/26 (Trainer Note): Charm is at the front of his kennel with a loose wiggly body as the handler approaches. He will play bow and bounce from the front to the back of his kennel multiple times before the handler scatters treats on the ground., They are then able to clip Charm's harness. Charm will bounces out of his kennel and will get the zoomies before returning to the handler. The handler takes him to a shady area and practices the 123 game. Charm will orient to the handler on the word three, but will sometimes become distracted. Charm jumps at the handler and attempts to mount them twice. Both times, Charm will follow a treat scatter. The handler engages Charm in some Up/Down game and then in some engage/disengage with a dog across the street. Charm is responsive to the marker word and will orient back to the handler when he sees it, but is not yet able to disengage from a dog. Charm will slowly walk back to the shelter, stopping at his kennel door. He will follow a treat in where he is safely returned. 6/28/26: On the white board Charm is reported to jump and spin in kennel.
Summary (6):: 06/27/26 (Trainer Note): Charm is at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and rushes out of kennel, jumping up into the air. Charm pulls hard outside and pants heavily with dilated pupils. The handler works with him on the 123 game and he is intermittently able to take treats. He leans into contact and rolls over to display his abdomen with a soft body. When the handler ceases contact he jumps up onto them, but is easily redirected. He pulls hard back to kennel but turns away from dogs when marked. 6/25/26: Charm is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins barking and jumping at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be clipped to his harness while being distracted with treats. He then pulls hard out of kennel and would constantly jump up on the handler on the way outside for a walk. He is able to be redirected with treats. On the walk, he walks ahead of the handler with a loose body while heavy panting. He would stare at dogs and people that were nearby and is able to be redirected with treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters when treats are tossed inside 06/12/26 (Trainer Note): Charm is laying at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. There are no other dogs outside so the handler works with Charm on the 123 game for loose leash walking. He participates with mild interest and is returned to kennel without issue. 06/06/26 (Trainer Note): Charm is laying at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. The handler works with him on the 123 game, take a breath, and engage/ disengage in the presence of dogs. He engages readily and is able to turn away from dogs with increasing reliability. Charm is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 05/27/26 (Trainer Note): Charm is laying at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls hard to the canine training room, pulling towards the crates as he walks past. Charm is loose and social with the handler, though he pants mildly and moves frenetically throughout the interaction. The handler works with Charm on sit, take a breath, the 123 game, and touch. Charm participates readily and is returned to kennel without issue. 5/24: Charm is seen hitting his kennel door so hard it jumps in place and his kennel blocker falls off. 05/22/26: Charm is lying on his kuranda bed as handler approaches. He comes forward and begins to jump up at the kennel door exuberantly but is avoidant of leash. Handler lures him through the leash with treats. Charm pulls hard throughout his walk, heavy panting with a flushed face. When handler stops at a corner, he jumps up and grips around their leg, mounting and is guided away with directional leash pressure. After his playgroup session, Charm pulls hard back to kennel and is returned
Summary (7):: 05/17/26(PG Note): Charm is standing at the front of his kennel and takes treats from the handler’s hand while being leashed. He is then brought to the play yard to meet a female playmate. Due to uncertainty regarding his interactions, a muzzle is initially placed on him prior to introduction. While at the gate for a nose to nose greeting, Charm displays a loose and wiggly body with slight hackles present. The gate is then opened for face to face interaction and both dogs engage in appropriate social play with frequent body to body contact while Charm maintains a loose, soft frame and offers multiple play bows. Following continued appropriate interactions, the muzzle is removed and Charm continues engaging appropriately with his playmate through loose body language and continued social play. See Dog to Dog note for more details. 5/15/26: Charm is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to bark and back away as the handler unlocks the door and attempts to leash him. He is able to be leashed with treats and he then pulls hard on the way to the play yard for play group. In the yard , he greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body while jumping up and down and barking. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with issues. 5/14/26: Reported via whiteboard that staff had to removed karonda bed due to covering water. 05/08/26 (Trainer Note): Charm is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulled moderately to the canine training room. The handler attaches a drag leash and Charm runs around the room with a loose body. The handler works with him on the 123 game and take a breath. He then continues to explore the room. After a few minutes, Charm approaches the handlers and begin to mouths at their hands and feet with mild pressure. He is easily redirected. Charm is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 04/09/26: Charm is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body and playfully engages with handler while taking treats as handler attempts to clip his collar. He eventually approaches and allows the leash to be clipped. Charm exits his kennel on a loose leash with a soft frame and is escorted outside for an enrichment walk. While outside, he maintains a loose, playful demeanor, jumping on handler and rolling onto his back while engaging with the environment. He explores and responds to sit cues from handler, receiving treats for compliance. When the session is complete, Charm is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 4/8/26: Charm is reported to not want to be leashed with a slip lead when attempting to do so, but ACS staff report he is much easier to leash when clipping the leash to his collar. 4/4/26: It is reported via the behavior board the Charm can be leashed using treats.

Summary:: anxious, but social. Staff were able to walk him back to his kennel, where he entered with no encour
Date of initial:: 6/2/2026
Summary:: loose and wiggly, tolerated all handling
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend that Charm be placed in a home with no children due to his arousal concerns, mouthiness, and on-leash reactivity. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns during his stay in care, the behavior department recommends Charm be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Charm to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Charm to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Charm presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: In the prior home he is noted to have had daily accidents in the home as he is partially housetrained. He will use the bathroom outside on walks (grass, cement, dirt, etc.). Destructive behavior: In the prior home he is noted to have destructive tendencies (furniture, walls, shoes, household items).Training should focus on gradual departure desensitization, building independence skills, and providing appropriate enrichment to help reduce anxiety and prevent anxiety-driven destruction. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Charm is noted to become mouthy, jumping up and mouthing hands. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Charm is noted to jump up in a social manner. Training should emphasize reinforcing calm alternative behaviors such as sitting for attention and consistently removing reinforcement for jumping. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful: In the prior home he is noted to be fearful of loud noises (ex. storms/thunder, fireworks and arguments). Training should focus on building her confidence through choice-based interactions, slow exposure to new environments, and reinforcing voluntary engagement to help her feel safer during handling and transitions. Please see the handout on decompression period. On-leash reactivity/Barrier frustration:Charm will react to bikes/skateboards/scooters/motorcycles/cars or traffic, cats, small animals - squirrels, birds, raccoons, opossums, etc., large dogs as well as small dogs when outside for a walk. he will react by lunging and barking . Charm is noted to bark during the knock portion of the handling assessment. Training should focus on reinforcing calm behavior during door-knock scenarios, using distance and controlled repetitions to help reduce reactivity. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Low Thresholf for arousal/ Leash Biting: Charm has been reported to jump up and leash bite when taken out of kennel. He has also occasionally thrashed. Strength/leash pulling: In the prior home he is noted to pull hard on the leash.Training should focus on teaching loose-leash walking through reward-based engagement, reinforcing moments of slack in the leash.Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
