Wasabi
Hello, my name is Wasabi. My animal id is #264444. I am a male brown dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/4/2026.
Wasabi is at risk for behavior reasons. Wasabi has been tolerant of handling but is deteriorating in care, chasing his tail in kennel, shredding his bedding and biting the bars of his kennel door. He loves tennis balls and toys but can become very snatchy, coming close to handler's body parts during play. Medically, Wasabi was brought into the care center as a stray with bites of an unknown origin. Additionally, he has a dermal mass, dermatitis, dental disease. He was recently changed to HA diet due erythema found.

He walks nicely on leash with only mild pulling and tends to ignore other people and dogs while out and about. He's comfortable with handling and enjoys playing with his toys. This big, silly guy has lots of energy and will thrive with plenty of exercise, mental enrichment, fun chew toys, and continued positive, reward-based training. Wasabi can get a little excited and jumpy, and he may become anxious or destructive when left alone, so he's looking for a patient adopter who can help him learn and feel secure. Wasabi is recommended for a home without children under 13. With structure, patience, and lots of love, this playful pup is ready to find his forever home! 🏡💚 Hi there! My name is Wasabi and I've been at the Staten Island ACC since September (yes, you read that right)! I arrived as a stray so the staff don't know what my life was like before coming to ACC, but I had various injuries that I'm recovering from really well. I only require a little extra paperwork to be filled out and a few extra vet visits this year because one of my injuries was likely a bite wound (now fully healed). I'm thankful for everyone at ACC taking such good care of me, but I think I'd like to find my forever home now. So what are you waiting for? Ask about me today!

Summary (6):: 10/8 Wasabi is easily leashed and walks out of kennel. He is brought to the yard and begins to search for toys. He jumps up on the toy bin and screeches as he attempts to retrieve a toy from inside. He then knocks it over grabbing a toy from inside. When staff picks up the toy bin, he jumps up on it and grabs the top to the bin from her hands, biting at it. She drops the top and he returns to his toy, squeaking it about. The handler approaches him as he is engaged and once leashed, he leaves his toy behind. He allows to be rope harnessed and is brought on a walk around the building before returning without further issue. 10/6 Wasabi is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and taken on a walk. Wasabi walks with a soft body, and pulls a moderate amount. When he defecates, staff bends down to pick it up he licks staff. Wasabi ignores people and dogs passed on the walk and is responsive to the handler. Wasabi is easily returned to his kennel. 9/29 Wasabi is at the front of his kennel; he jumps up once before staff opens the kennel door. He is easily leashed and brought outside with no issue other than moderate pulling. He is brought to the yard, as staff attempts to put on his drag leash, he is very jumpy. Once his drag leash is on Wasabi explores the yard, sniffing at the floor the entire time. Staff call Wasabi over to get his attention; Wasabi runs towards staff and jumps up at them and his face grazes staff's chin. This caused staff to lose their footing but not fall. Staff went to sit on the bench, and Wasabi went back to sniffing around the yard. After some time, Wasabi Came to staff and rested his head on their lap. Staff then pet him on the head. Immediately after, Wasabi jumps right at staff's face. The power from his jump caused the bench to move back and lose balance. Staff quickly moved back, and when moving back Wasabi jumped at staff's face again. Staff put their leash around Wasabi. Brought him to the gate and took off his drag leash. Staff clipped their leash and brought Wasabi into his kennel with no further issue. 9/28 Wasabi is sitting at the front of his kennel as staff approaches. He has been whining and vocalizing while other dogs in the room have been taken out. As soon as staff unlocks his door, he quiets and sits at the door waiting. Staff easily leashes him and takes him outside. He pulls towards the yard, but staff redirects him on a walk around the building so as not to pass another dog in the yard. He pulls moderately until staff takes him through the gate, where he relieves himself on the ramp and settles down, pulling mildly and sniffing the grass as they proceed around the building and into the empty yard. Staff attaches a drag leash and Wasabi immediately grabs half of a torn stuffed toy that had been left in the yard. He shakes the toy repeatedly and stuffing flies everywhere. He drops it and looks around for other toys. Staff approaches the torn
Summary (7):: 9/27: Wasabi is chasing his tail in kennel when returned. When staff leave the room, he is heard screeching, biting the bars of his kennel causing his mouth to bleed. 9/26: When familiar staff member enter the room, Wasabi is seen spinning in his kennel and then goes to bite at the kennel door. He is distracted with a long lasting chew 9/23: Wasabi is standing at the front of his kennel wagging his tail. He is easily leashed and is brought to the yard where a drag leash is placed on him. The staff member tosses a ball and Wasabi chases after it, then brings it back to the staff member. They play fetch back and forth. Wasabi then approaches the staff member and they give him pets. As he is given pets, he leans into them. He is then returned to his kennel. 9/13: Wasabi is on his bed and comes forward on approach. He is easily leashed and bought to the yard. Once in the yard he begins to search for toys. A few tennis balls are thrown in rotation. He scurries after them. When retrieving, he will bring directly to handler, almost chewing the toy against their body. If he drops the toy he will frantically search after it. He does not trade for treats, attempting to eat the treats with ball still in mouth. When he tires, he leans in for pets. Wasabi returns without issue. 9/8 Wasabi was sitting at the front of his kennel and easily leashed and taken to the yard. Wasabi explored the yard and accepted pets and treats from staff. Wasabi then jumped up on bench next to staff and accepted more pets. Wasabi was then taken back to his kennel with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to potential challenges, we recommend a home with no children at this time.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,Bite history (other animal)
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Wasabi is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, chewing through the finder's door. Wasabi is a stray and we have no other notes from a previous owner. We suggest to future adopters that Wasabi will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. ? Basic manners/poor impulse control: Wasabi lacks basic manners and impulse control. He is a large dog and will sometimes jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control.? Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: When playing with toys, Wasabi may come up to staff, chewing the toy up against them. He has not put his mouth on staff however; it is highly possible he can mouth someone when exhibiting this behavior. Please see handout on Mouthiness and Bite Inhibition. Bite history (other animal): Wasabi came into the care center with bites on an unknown origin. We are unaware of the situation how he sustained these injuries. Anxiety/Separation anxiety: Wasabi was reported to chew through his finder's door. He is showing signs of anxiety in care, searching the yard obsessively for toys. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety.?
