Coco Choco
Hello, my name is Coco Choco. My animal id is #250026. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/31/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Coco Choco is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Coco Choco arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender. Coco Choco's previous owner reported her as social and affectionate. Upon intake Coco Choco was noted to be fearful during her handling assessment but did tolerate contact. Unfortunately, despite efforts to keep her comfortable, Coco Choco has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. Coco Choco is reported to be consistently heavily panting while in kennel, and at times thrash on leash when returning from walks. Outside of the shelter environment Coco Choco is generally aloof with staff. Medically, Coco Choco was noted to be overweight on entering the shelter, and was started on a special diet. Coco Choco has lost weight during their time here but further testing is recommended as her appetite is not consistent. Coco Choco is also noted to have a slight lip droop which can occur for seeral reasons and further testing would be recommended.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Coco Choco sat quietly with in the admissions lobby for several hours while waiting for intake -- she was relaxed and loose bodied though alert during this time. When it became time for her to head back to her kennel, she started to visibly tremble in the hallway. She walked slowly to her kennel, and a belly band was used to lift her to her kennel.

Summary (6):: 5/5/26: It is reported that Coco is reluctant to be returned to kennel, and will begin to thrash. She has to be muscled into kennel. 5/3/26: It is reported that Coco is retreating from the kennel when handlers attempt to return her to kennel. When a belly band is used she will become tense, show whale eye, and begin panting heavily. 5/2/26: It is reported that Coco Choco may need to be belly banded into kennel. 5/2/26: Coco Choco is sitting in the middle of her kennel, moderately tense. She does not take treats. The handler opens the door and she scoots forwards while still sitting. She is leashed and lead out to the street where she walks next to the handler with a mildly tense body and low tail. She occasionally pulls side to side in a frantic manner. She relieves herself. She takes one treat but rejects subsequent ones. She is lead back to the kennel room, where she balks and somewhat pancakes right outside. She is muscled into kennel.
Summary (7):: 4/30/26: Coco is being returned to her kennel by a staff member. She is panting and when they approach the kennel, Coco begins to back away from the kennel. She is not interested in treats offered or squeaker sounds. Handler readjusts their position then muscles her in as Coco continues to pull away. 4/29/26: It is reported that Coco is at the front of the kennel heavily panting. Also noted to thrash when going back into kennel and has to be jogged back. 4/28/26: Coco Choco is at the front of the kennel heavily panting. 4/21/26: Coco Choco is reported to be thrashing on return to kennel. 4/20/26: Coco is observed to be laying at the front of the kennel panting heavily 04/11/26: Coco Choco is at the center of her kennel as handler approaches, she is panting heavily and moves away from handler further into kennel. Handler tosses treats to the front of kennel which Coco ignores, he is lassoed and leashed, once leashed he exits kennel and walks slowly out of kennel to the hallway and out to the street. While outside Coco walks very slowly behind handler. She stops and stares at people walking behind her and generally ignores dogs. Coco does not accept treats outside and remains generally aloof throughout the interaction. After a bit she is brought back inside and returns to kennel with mild leash pressure. 4/9/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Coco Choco "walked very well, no pulling; no reactivity observed". 4/2/26: Coco Choco is lying down at the front of her kennel; as she is leashed, she stands up and exits on her own. After exiting the room, Coco looks back at the room, but continues the walk. On the street, Coco walks behind and next to the handler with mild to no leash tension; she doesn't react to people or dogs, even as she stares at one dog with a neutral body, she breaks her own focus. when the handler turns to pet her, Coco flinches and steps back. As the handler walks her inside, Coco walks behind them; she then looks behind her to look at staffers close by. She is then brought in for her assessment (see notes). Afterwards, the handler clips their leash and walks Coco into the room; she then baulks midway through the room, so the hadler adds leash tension, which helps her move. Once she is at her kennel, Coco Crispy doesn't enter on her own; the handler muscles her into kennel

ENERGY LEVEL:: Coco Choco is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Coco Choco.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Coco's fearful disposition and need for contact on her own terms, we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: During her assessment it was observed that Coco was very tense and times and fearful with handlers, she has been reported to baulk and refuse to walk on leash at times as well. It is important to always go slow and give Coco the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Coco would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
