Summary:: According to Powda Blu's previous owner, he growls and bites other dogs. The owner stated that he cannot be around other dogs or animals. 1/28: When off leash at the Care Center, Powda Blu is introduced to a novel female dog. He enters the pen with a high energy level and anxiety. He jumps on the gate and paws at the female through the gate. The female grumbles at him but he persists. Due to the female's lack of tolerance, the gate is not opened and an off-leash interaction is not conducted. 1/30: Powda Blu enters the pens highly anxious and unable to readily focus. He is walked over to the gate by handlers to greet a novel female dog. Powda Blu jumps on the gate, screeches, and paws at the female through the gate. The female grumbles at him and Powda is muzzled and his leash is held as a precaution. Once in close proximity to him, Powda Blu becomes sexually motivated and persistently sniffs her genitals, ignoring her body language and distance increasing signs. When the female is led away, he fixates on the muzzle and attempts to remove it.

Summary:: Vocal, pacing, whining

Date of initial:: 1/17/2020

Summary:: Jumpy, soft-bodied, seeks petting

ENERGY LEVEL:: Powda is reported to have an extremely high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. He will need plenty of mental and physical exercise with appropriate outlets for his enthusiastic behaviors. We recommend feeding with treat-dispensing toys and puzzle feeders. We also recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Powda Blu.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/27/20: Powda was sleeping upon approach but woke up as when his kennel was unlocked. He jumped up on the door but was able to be leashed without issue. In the pens he was jumping up on handlers soliciting attention. He saw pigeons in the second pen which he was initially focused on but was refocused with the use of tennis balls. When handler was sitting on the bench he began to nibble on her treat pouch and hands with mild pressure. As we were leaving the pens another staff member said hello and Powda jumped up toward him and mouthed his sleeves. He then returned to his kennel without issue. 1/26/20: Powda Blu was the front of his kennel jumping and barking when approached. He was soft-bodied and easy to leash. In the pens he ran around softly going from person to person and jumping onto them, while allowing us to pet him all over. During the session I was able to get Powda Blu attention and and made the hand signal for sit and paw which he followed and I then rewarded him with treats. Powda Blu remain loose and wiggly for the session and allowed all handling needed to go back into his kennel with no issue. 1/22/20: Powda was standing on the kennel door upon approach with a soft body. He was jumping when attempting to rope but easily roped on second attempt and led to the pens where a drag leash was attached. He solicited attention by jumping on handlers and allowing to be pet on his head, neck and body. He engaged in start stop play with me and mouthed my hand once with minimal pressure. He spent most of the session running between handlers and soliciting attention. He did see another dog through the gate and became stiff, and barked once. He focused on the dog until he couldnt see it anymore but quickly recovered. At the end of the session he returned without issue. 1/19/20: Powda Blu was soft and wagging his tail at the front of his kennel. He jumped up on the door as I was unlocking it. He was easily roped and led out to the pens where he was collared and a drag leash attached. He remained soft throughout the session and took treats gently. When his name was called or a squeaky toy was used, Powda Blue did not respond. Various sounds were made to test his hearing, Powda to which he did not respond. He jumped up on handler with a soft body and allowed to be pet all over. At the end of the session he returned to his kennel without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: Single pet home: Based on Powda Blu's history in the home with a previous housemate dog, we recommend a single pet home for him for the time being. He is reported to be able to play off-leash with other dogs, but in the home has repeated conflicts. No dog parks: Due to the behavior concerns in the previous home in conjunction with displays of behavior indicating that Powda Blu does not respond to social cues when around other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Powda Blu not be taken to dog parks. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to counter-condition and desensitize Powda Blu to help him associate other dogs with positive experiences, such as toys or treats. No children (under 13): Due to the intensity of Powda Blu's jumping and mouthing, we feel as though he would be best set up to succeed in an experienced adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Powda's multiple-bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide behavior modification and counter-conditioning to address the underlying conflict.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog)
