Animal Profile

Greywash

Hello, my name is Greywash. My animal id is #221741. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/5/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Greywash is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center, Greywash has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body, tucked tail and whale eyes. When approached Greywash becomes avoidant of the handler and attempts to hide. During his medical exam Greywash was observed to lip lift and growl. Multiple reassessments were attempted in which he continued to display very high levels of fearfulness. He was avoidant of handlers, remained tense with a tucked tail, showing whale eyes, and seeks exit. Greywash has tolerated brief, gentle petting on his head. Medically, he has recently recovered from CIRDC.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 3/5/2025

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 3/6/2025

Summary:: **3/9/25** Graywash is brought into the assessment room again. He remains tense and hard stares at the handler when he enters the room. When approach Graywash becomes more tense, and is avoidant of the handler. He is not receptive to treats and he begins to hide behind the secondary handlers when the primary handler attempts to interact with his. Due to high levels of fear and stress the handlers ends the interaction. **3/6/25** When brought into the assessment room Graywash remained tense and fearful. When approached Graywash became increasingly tense and avoidant of the primary handler. Graywash would attempt to hide behind the secondary handler with a tense body, tucked tail, and showing whale eyes. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Graywash is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 3/25/25: Greywash greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and wagging tail. He toe taps.

Summary (6):: 3/24/25: Greywash was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks slightly ahead of the handler, occasionally pulling mildly. It is raining lightly, so he is taken to the interaction room, where he rubs up against the handler before rolling on his back on the floor. The handler drops the leash, and he playfully chases the end before stopping in a play bow stance with a waggy tail. The handler prompts him to sit for treats, which he does and takes softly before leaning in for pets on the head and body. Another staff member walks by the room, and he stops to look but does not otherwise react. After some more pets, he is easily returned to his kennel. 3/22/25: Greywash was standing at the front of his kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He was easily leashed and taken out to the street. He walks alongside the handler with a loose leash and sometimes pulling mildly. Greywash occasionally checks in with handler and is given a treat each time, taking them gently. At the crosswalk, Handler has Greywash sit for treats. Handler pets Greywash and he tolerates petting on his head and neck. Greywash will lower his head with his ears back as people. A person turns the corner quickly and Greywash stops and stares at the person with a tense body. Handler uses a vocal cue (clicking) to redirect Greywash, he is given a treat when he walks forward afterwards. After sometime, Greywash is then walked back to the shelter and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 3/11/25 Greywash is standing in the middle of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is offered treats which he sniffs but does not eat. When the kennel door is opened, he gently puts his head into the gap of the door but does not attempt to push it open with any force. Easily leashed and removed from his kennel, he briefly thrashes against the leash pressure and paws against the leash before stopping. He is then easily maneuvered through the busy hallway and redirected to change directions due to traffic. He is brought to the interaction room, where he sniffs around. He filches slightly at the first attempt at petting but does not move his head. He then stops sniffing and sits down in front of the handler, facing away. Gentle petting is attempted again and he is receptive, moving his head upwards to lean into the pets. The handler then sits on the bench, and he slowly climbs up onto the bench to join. He poses for some photos, before leaving the room with no issue. He is taken for a brief street walk, where he walks slightly in front of the handler, intermittently pulling slightly with no reaction to passing strangers. He does his business and is returned to the building without issue, easily maneuvering through the crowded hallways on a short leash. When returning to his kennel he hops up and immediately walks to the back to sit on his kurunda bed before turning around. 3/9/25: Greywash is standing at the back of his kennel with his head low to the floor as handler approaches. He is comfortable approaching the front and would shove his snout through the door gap while being leashed. Once leashed, he walked slowly on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would become nervous and would walk with his body tense and low to the ground and would stop walking and hard stare at the handler. He would start to pull when he saw dogs passing by across the street and close by. He is then taken to the behavior room for his second try of his assessment. In the room, he continued to be nervous and would hard stare at the handlers while lowering his head to the ground. He would back away each time the handler would try to collar him and walk away to pull towards the door. He was then taken back to kennel. 3/6/25: Greywash is lying down in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while still laying down and then taken for a walk outside. He would walk very slow with his body low to the ground and a low tucked tail. He would try to walk behind the handler when he was outside. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. He would hide and sit behind the handler and was nervous of being approached and collard. Due to his fearfulness, his assessment will be completed on a later date. He walked slowly back to his kennel and entered with no issue.

Date of initial:: 3/5/2025

Summary:: Tail tucked, whale eyed, lip lifting, growled for muzzle. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Greywash so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Graywash has been observed to be fearful during his stay in the care center. During his intake exam Graywash was observed to have a tucked tail, whale eye lip lifted and growled when a muzzle was placed on him. It is important to move slowly with Graywash, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
