Pre-Screener Form

Gideon is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care, Gideon has been observed to lunge and snap at handlers while in his crate. In one instance a handler rested their hand on top of his crate, and Gideon lunged and bit them through the crate cover. This bite was a bite and release that broke skin. After the bite incident, Gideon continued to lunge and snap at their hands. With handlers, Gideon has been observed to be receptive to treats and is receptive to the cue "sit." Medically, Gideon has alopecia and is underweight.

Summary (6):: 10/21/26 (KSV): Gideon is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, his kennel blocker is removed and he displays an alert and tense posture with a high wagging tail. Handler kneels down near the front of kennel and begins offering pieces of chicken, Gideon accepts them readily and takes them from handler, he then looks at handler eagerly awaiting more. He is offered spray cheese at the bottom of the kennel door and exuberantly accepts it, spending a few minutes licking and eating the cheese. He accepts regular treats from handler as well, when not being offered treats Gideon will briefly whine until given more treats so handler gives a bit more cheese to Gideon before ending the interaction.

Summary (7):: 10/19/26 (KSV): Gideon was standing with his front paws on his kennel door as handler approached. When handler spoke to Gideon he sat and tilted his head while looking at handler. Handler offered a treat thru the kennel bars and Gideon readily accepted. Handler continued to offer various treats thru different locations of the kennel bars and also tossing some so that they would fall from above Gideon onto the floor. Handler asked for a sit and Gideon preformed the behavior. After a few more treats handler ended the interaction by giving Gideon a treat scatter and walking away while he was searching out the treats in his kennel. 10/12/26: (KSV) As handler approaches Gideon's kennel he is at the front with a neutral body and wagging tail. Handler tosses treats into the kennel, which he would quickly take. Handler would ask him to sit, which he would, he is then rewarded with another treat. Handler would continue to feed him treats through the bars and would ignore the other dogs in the kennel room barking. Interaction was then ceased. 10/7/26: A staff member expressed concerns about Gideon biting someone through his kennel bars. They stated that Gideon was lunging and snapping at them while he was in his crate. 10/6/26: A staff member rested their hand on top of Gideon's crate. He lunged and bit them through multiple crate covers. This bite was a bite and release. After the bite incident, Gideon continued to lunge and snap at the handler. 10/6/26: It is reported that Gideon is reacting to other dogs passing his crate and is pushing his crate forward. He is also pulling his crate covers in. 10/01/26 [assessment]: Gideon is at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. His body is neutral. He gently accepts offered treat and allows leashing. He readily exits the kennel and Gideon walks through the hallways with no reaction to other dogs or staff members. Once outside, Gideon continues walking with mild leash tension slightly ahead of the handler. He has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. Gideon is social with handler and frequently looks back at them. He is social, allows petting, receptive to treats and follows verbal cues. He remains neutral body. body Once walk is done Gideon is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the assessment (see notes). During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Gideon back into his kennel with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Gideon so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor bite inhibition and bite history, we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Gideon has been observed to take treats with mild- moderate pressure. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Gideon to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Gideon has been observed to react to other dogs passing by, he will lunge towards them moving his pop up crate towards them. Gideon will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
