Animal Profile

Autumn

Hello, my name is Autumn. My animal id is #246370. I am a female unknown (update later) cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/27/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Autumn is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She has a severe bite/scratch history and may display signs of confliction, overstimulation, or pet-induced aggression in the shelter environment. When she is welcoming of attention, she allows petting and handling and enjoys puree treats as a reward. Despite her positive interactions at times, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful or sensitive cat adjust to strangers.

I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. What my friends at ACC say about me: Autumn was displaying behaviors in the previous home that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a new home. She has a severe bite/scratch incident and she was initially observed to hiss, growl, or swat in the shelter environment; however, after about 1 week, she now curiously sniffs, engages with attention, leans in for cheek rubs, and accepts dry and puree treats at the front of the kennel. It is difficult to determine at this time how if her behavior will be consistent or if it may change. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.

For a New Family to Know: Autumn is an independent cat. She prefers contact on her own terms but when she chooses she is a super loving girl. Autumn likes toys that crinkle and chasing bugs or moths. With people she tends to play rough, and may nip or swat when pet too long. When on her own she enjoys scratching on carpet or fabric vertical surfaces- sometimes she may scratch up furniture. Autumn likes all kinds of food and soft treats. Oreo is used to a covered litterbox with unscented litter.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Indoor Cat Previously lived with: 2 adults, 3 children (3, 11, 16 y/o) Behavior toward strangers: Actively avoids or retreats from strangers. With visitors, will be shy but tolerant. Behavior toward children: Prefers contact on her own terms, will become tolerant. Behavior toward cats: no experience Behavior toward dogs: no experience Bite or Scratch history: On 1/26/25, Owner and her son noted that Autumn was showcasing strange behavior by staying very low to the ground and dragging herself around the home. Autumn then went under the living room table and stayed there for most of the day. During the afternoon, the owner went over to the table to pull out a chair and sit with her daughter who was doing her homework. However, when she did that, Autumn began to meow/vocalize very loudly and lunged at the owner. She first latched on to her left leg and scratched/bit her calf leaving several punctures. Autumn then jumped and did the same on her right calf/leg. The owner began to try to remove her away from her legs but Autumn then began to attack both hands and arms. Now overwhelmed, the owner ran into her bedroom, with Autumn still holding on to her, and jumped on the bed. The owner's daughter then threw a blanket on top of the cat and Autumn stopped attacking. Everyone locked themselves in their room, however, when they would open the door, Autumn began to vocalize and tried to charge at them again. The owner's eldest son was the only one that could scare Autumn into stopping her attacks. The owner received medical care at a hospital and began to receive shots for 47 puncture wounds. She has on-going appointments to continue these shots Jan 30th, Feb 2nd, and Feb 11th. Autumn was not up to date with vaccines at the time of the incident. Although, there are no other pets in the home, the owner mentioned that they have a mice problem. Litter box training: Yes, she had access to 1 covered litter box, with unscented litter, located in the kitchen. Energy level/descriptors: medium energy Other notes: Autumn is described as a independent cat who prefers contact on her own terms. She spends most of her time in the living room, bedroom, and at the window. She plays rough, likes toys that crinkle, and chases bugs or moths. She receives interactive playtime once a month or less. She likes to scratch on carpet/fabric and vertical surfaces. The previous owner reports that she can be a really lovable cat on her own terms; and when she is, she is really nice. She eats both wet and (mostly) dry food of any brand. She likes soft treats. She hisses, growls, and swats when picked up or held. She has a bite/scratch history, scratches on furniture, and nips/swats when pet for too long. Upon intake: Autumn showed a tense body and kept lip licking. She did not want to go into the den so we tried to tilt it. However, she began to hiss and growl. She was later brought to intakes and kept in the hard carrier.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 2/4/26 Autumn was sitting up at the back of the kennel with her head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a neutral body and eyes. When offering treats on the scratcher tool, she lowers her head and leans forward to sniff and then she leans back and sits up when reaching close. She leans in for cheek rubs, remains calm when petting her head, and walks forward to eat treats initially offered when stroking her body. She sniffs the tool again, leans in hard for cheek rubs, rubs her face on the den, walks to the front to greet the assessor, ignores treats offered, and then pokes her head out of the kennel to scan the environment. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. After closing the door, she eats the leftover treats. 1/28/26 FB73 Autumn is laying inside of her den, body tense, eyes wide, and pupils very dilated as the handler approaches. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, she tenses and lip licks before striking it hard. Interaction ended to reduce FAS. 2/1/26 ACFR Autumn was sitting on top of her den with forward ears and a tense body. When kennel door was opened she stood, stretched, and sat down with her tail curled tightly around her paws. Squeeze up was offered on a scratcher tool, she came forward to sniff for several moments before slowly eating it. When finished, handler began to pull tool away and she tensed, lip licking and growling. Handler paused then continued to move away again slowly, she hard stares at the tool then hisses and strikes it hard. Interaction ended due to FAS. 2/2/26 FB47 Observed Autumn while she sat on top of the den, she appeared somewhat calm, sitting quietly. I gave treats. 2/8/26 FB73 Autumn is standing at the front of the kennel, stress meowing and pawing intensely with claws outside of the kennel door. She is offered a squeeze up and immediately begins eating it, fur on her back displaying piloerection. She is given time to decompress before being approached again, allowing some petting on the head and cheeks. When the interaction is ended and the kennel door is closed, she meows softly and paws towards the handler to solicit further attention. A short while later Autumn is given a mouse toy and she begins to play with it vigorously. ***CONTINUED IN GAN***

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Sweet,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Reported signs of becoming overwhelmed, potentially resorting to nipping/swatting, when pet for too long. In shelter, she was initially observed to hiss, growl, or swat (see Enrichment Notes above from 01/28/26 and 02/01/26 for more details); however, after about 1 week, she now curiously sniffs, engages with attention, leans in for cheek rubs, and accepts dry and puree treats at the front of the kennel. She appears to be food motivated, so we recommend using high-valued treats to build positive associations with interactions. On 2/15/26, she was observed to show signs of pet-induced aggression and overstimulation. She may chirp, sniff and lick your hand, or reach her paw gently through the door to solicit attention; however, upon touching her head or cheeks, she immediately steps back, short stress meows, and her body twitches. She has a severe bite/scratch incident with an unknown trigger that resulted in her attacking the owner's legs, arms, and hands leaving 47 puncture wounds to be treated at a hospital (see Known History above for more details).

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to severe bite/scratch incident.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Autumn is laying in the middle of the kennel, picking up her head to observe the assessor as they approach, pupils dilating in and out. When the kennel door is opened, she comes forward, trilling and head bunting the assessor's hand. She initially leans into all petting before she pauses, backing away and moving the top of her den with her paw lifted. Petting is stopped and the kennel door is closed and after a few moments she returns to the front of the kennel, extending a paw outside of the kennel door and meowing to solicit attention. She tolerates some more petting on the head and cheeks before tensing again. Interaction is ended. Autumn was displaying behaviors in the previous home that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a new home.
