Animal Profile

Apollo

Hello, my name is Apollo. My animal id is #209298. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/12/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Apollo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Apollo initially was uncomfortable with being leashed to be removed from his kennel. He had escalated to snapping at the leash when presented, dodging the leash, and could be difficult to remove from the kennel at times. Apollo is accepting of treats, so handlers are using treats as an incentive to help lure him to the front of the kennel and with the leashing process. Apollo when outside is aloof with staff, flinching when being pet and panting heavily. Medically, Apollo was diagnosed with CIRDC.

Apollo when outside is aloof with staff, flinching when being pet and panting heavily. Medically, Apollo was diagnosed with CIRDC. Apollo was surrendered to the care center because his previous owners developed allergies. In his former home, he knew commands like sit, stay, "mine" (drop it), and "no" (leave it). Apollo loves playing outside, especially chasing balls. However, he hasn't adjusted well to the care center environment, showing high levels of stress. This stress has made it challenging for staff to take him out for walks, as he tends to snap, growl, and bark when they try to leash him. Apollo is also touch-sensitive and uncomfortable with handling, so it's crucial to move slowly and be cautious when touching him, as we are unsure of all his sensitivities.

Behavior team notes hyperactivity, leash reactivity. Start clonidine .01 mg/kg PO q12h indefinitely, monitor response

9/21/2024

Behavior med recheck - started on clonidine 0.1mg/kg PO q12h 2 weeks ago. Note from Canine Behavior: Apollo has been definitely improving with his leash reactivity, it's still a bit difficult but he is significantly easier to leash with high value items, but the leash reactivity is still there. So, I would say his clonidine is benefiting him for sure. In terms of his hyperactivity, that's also improved during walks. Plan: Continue with current dose of clonidine indefinitely while in shelter, update/alter as needed in collaboration with Canine Behavior team.

For a New Family to Know: Apollo is a social, affectionate, very active, and playful dog. He spends most of his time where people are or in the living room. For grooming, Apollo allows his owner/family to bathe him, brush him, and trim his nails. He may be a little hesitant to get in the tub, but peanut butter goes a long way to help him get in the bath. He usually gets walked about 1-2 times per day for 15 minutes each walk, and will pull very little to mildly on leash. Apollo does have a crate in his home, but does not do well in the crate. He is nervous getting/being in the car. Apollo knows the cues sit, stay, "mine" (drop it), and "no" (leave it). Apollo's favorite activity is to play outside - especially playing or chasing balls. He also loves tug toys and chew toys, and loves all snacks. His owner's favorite thing about him is how loyal and friendly he is.

Summary (3):: 09/27/24: Apollo will be fed treated out the handler's hand and will be leashed and brought to the assessment room. Apollo displayed that he has the knowledge of plenty of cues such as sit, down, high five, speak/bark, turn, and paw. Apollo will also display leash biting during his time in the room. Apollo will be brought back to his kennel safely with no issues. 09/26/24: Apollo is laying down at the back of his kennel and will jump up and run to the front of his kennel as handler's approaches jumping up pawing at the glass while handler speaks to him in a soft voice. Handler will administer a hand full of treats through the slip lead and Apollo will be leash with ease as he eats from novel handler's hand and brought out his kennel and taken on a walk where he will explore the environment sniffing and relieving himself. Apollo will be brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely with no issues.

Summary (4):: 09/24/24: Apollo stands and willingly comes to the front of the kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. Handler uses treats to lure Apollo through the leash. He pulls hard outside, beginning to cough and gag due to the applied pressure. Handler conditions the 1-2-3 pattern and begins to play the 1-2-3 game with Apollo. Handler takes orienting towards them as opting in and initiates the pattern each time he does so. Apollo opts in readily, walking with a loose leash next to the handler and only occasionally opting out to sniff or observe the environment. He allows the handler to clip the leash and enters the kennel without issue. 09/23/24 Apollo's behavior remains the same. There have been improvements in leashing where today both in the AM & PM the handler didn't use any treats to leash him. Apollo willingly comes forward and allows leashing. 09/22/24 Apollo is lying down as the handler approaches. As the handler unlocks the kennel door, Apollo rises, willingly coming forward. The handler creates a treat trail, in which catches Apollo's attention. As the handler opens the door, they feed the lead inside while Apollo is distracted taking treats from the trail. Apollo is leashed with ease and taken for a walk. Apollo displays a still, neutral frame while walking moderately beside the handler. Apollo will catch treats when tossed. The two will commence their walk as Apollo explores and marks different areas. Apollo is returned to the facility where he enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue.

Summary (5):: 9/20/24: Apollo is in his kennel dodging the rope from an ACS when Novel handler will approach and ask the ACS if they wanted help. ACS will step to the side and allow novel handler to attempt to leash Apollo. Novel handler will crack the kennel door open as he place the leash in the kennel anticipating the proper time to lasso Apollo as he's dodging the rope while it's over his head in a cheerio shape. Novel handler will drop the loop over Apollo's head and he will be successfully leashed and brought out his kennel and re-leashed by ACS and brought outside. 09/20/24: ACS reports that Apollo is in front of his kennel when the handler approaches him, the handler goes to leash him Apollo begins to snap and dodge the leash. Apollo displays a tense body barking and snapping at them. ACS asks for assistance in taking out Apollo which they begin to give him treats which he ignores. They put spray cheese in front of his door in attempting to distract him while they leash him, which he ignores and continues to hard bark. 09/18/24 (PM) Apollo's behavior remains the same, if not better. Apollo is dodging the lead less and more willing to allow the lead on him. 09/17/24 Apollo is on his bed as the handler approaches. Apollo will come forward, exuberantly jumping onto his kennel door. Apollo will collect treats as the handler tosses them while attempting to leash him. The handler sets a treat trail in which they use to leash Apollo. Apollo is leashed and taken for a walk. Apollo displays a still, neutral frame while moderately trotting beside the handler. Apollo will mark heavily in multiple places as they walk. Apollo will explore in many areas as well. Apollo catches treats as they are tossed over the course of the walk. Apollo is returned to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue. -

Summary (6):: 09/16/24 (PM) As the handler approaches, Apollo approaches the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly frame. Apollo jumps onto his kennel door excessively and exuberantly, attempting to squeeze his head through the crack of the door. The handler will toss treats and attempt to leash him which is unsuccessful. Apollo will duck and dodge the lead while retreating to the back of his kennel. The handler gets assistance from another handler and as the other handler sprinkles treats to keep Apollo distracted, the main handler guides the lead over his head and onto his neck, gently. The handler is successful, taking Apollo out on a walk. Apollo displays a relaxed, neutral body while walking moderately beside the handler. In some cases, Apollo will pull, while heavily panting. Apollo takes treats roughly when administered, so the handler begins to toss treats. Apollo is returned to the facility entering the building and his kennel with no issue. 9/15/24: Apollo is at the front of the kennel panting heavily and pawing at the door when the handler approaches. Apollo when the kennel door is opened, Apollo is hard barking and starting to track the leash, quivering his lip. Apollo when the leash is brought to his face, backs up hard barking with a forward body. Apollo is slowly coaxed with high value treats into the leash, which takes several minutes due to his high rope reactivity. Apollo when outside pulls very hard on leash and the handler has to take several breaks for him to catch his breath to prevent him from passing out. Apollo slowly begins to loosen his body when exploring his surroundings, taking treats from handlers and beginning to pant slower, and pulls very mildly. The handler tries to pet Apollo along his upper back, and he flinches hard giving whale eye. The handler does not try to pet Apollo anymore, and is brought back to his kennel with no issue where he instantly begins to hard bark and paw at the kennel door when leaving.

Summary (7):: 09/14/24: Apollo is in kennel avoiding and dodging the slip-lead from going over and around his head when ACS is trying to get him out of kennel. ACS handler will offer treats and Apollo will continue to dodge the slip-lead. BT handler will notice what's going on and comes over to Apollo's kennel to assist the ACS. BT handler will take the slip-lead from ACS and attempt to leash Apollo. Apollo will avoid lead and when handler is able to lasso him he will begin to leash bite while holding and pulling on the lead, handler will offer treats but Apollo doesn't release the lead, handler will clothes the kennel gate and Apollo will release the lead from his mouth and he will be brought out of his kennel and pasted off to the primary ACS handler. 9/13/2024: When the handler tried taking Apollo out of the kennel he displayed baring teeth growling/hard barking and biting on the lead. when the handler closed his kennel door he begins to jump in front of his kennel air snapping.

Date of intake:: 9/12/2024

Summary:: nervous, loosens when leashed, pulls hard on leash

Date of initial:: 9/12/2024

Summary:: loose, wiggly body, panting, jumping up for attention

ENERGY LEVEL:: Apollo is described as active and enthusiastic in his previous home. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Apollo.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Apollo is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. No cats: Due to Apoillo's previous owner reporting that he hard barks at cats, we recommend that he be placed in a home without cats or other smaller animals. Place With a New Hope Partner: Apollo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Apollo has growled, snapped, and hard barking when attempting to leash him to remove from his kennel for walks or interactions, showing discomfort with being handled in care. It is important to move slowly at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Apollo to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful: Apollo's previous owner reports that he is fearful and needs time to warm up to new people with a slow approach. Similar behaviors have been observed in care. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Apollo's previous owner reports that he had generalized anxiety in the home. His owner described him as an anxious dog, but did not give details on how the anxiety manifested. If Frankel displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Apollo demonstrates barrier frustration by becoming overly aroused hard barking. This indicates a need for desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques to help his remain calm and composed in situations where he is separated by barriers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-biting- During jog portion of his handling assessment Apollo began to leash bite.
