Animal Profile

Jax

Hello, my name is Jax. My animal id is #212066. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 10/11/2024.

Jax is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I am looking for a home with a patient person. A volunteer writes: Jax hasn't been entirely forthcoming on his preferences, except of course that he doesn't want to be here. He wants a family. He also doesn't really like to come out of his den, which makes it difficult to introduce himself to potential families. But you know, I wouldn't want to be judged on my worst days and it seems that Jax has come into a whole bunch of those lately. Brought to us in October, we don't know too much about who Jax was before. He's a cat, full of dynamic surprises and infinite interests, but the shelter hasn't been the right environment for him to show us all of his glittering facets. We offer him treats and catnip toys, the softest blankets we can find and some pets, but Jax explains he doesn't want any of those, only a family. A patient family who will give him grace as he figures things out. In the meantime, he'll just be waiting in his den, thank you very much. Jax has been through a bunch of big life changes in a very short time and is hoping that someone will offer him a chance to shine.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Jax was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/15/24 FB58 In den, hidden from view except for one eye (wide and dilated). I place a tray down with treats and add a cage cover (as his morning wet food hadn't been eat yet) in hopes of making his cage more comfortable. 10/20/24 Vol Jax was in his den. I lifted the cover and he looked directly at me. I placed Squeeze Up near the opening of the den and spoke quietly to him. He moved away from me, to the far reached of the den. I did not push him and ended the interaction after a short while. 10/27/24 Vol Jax was in his den, peering out through the opening. He was nestled into a towel, with his ears flat. I opened the den panel and spoke to him. He just looked at me. I offered Squeeze Up through the opening of the den but he did not seem interested in it. I did not put my hand into the den to try to pet him because he showed no interest in interacting today. 11/3/24 Vol Jax was in his den, with only his whiskers showing from the opening. I lifted the den cover and saw him curled up at the back of the den. I spoke to him and put Squeeze Up near him but he showed no interest in it. I ended the interaction without trying to pet him, because he did not seem to want to be touched. 11/16/24 FB79 Inside of his den, Jax has wide eyes and backs away towards the corner when i lift the den cover to get a better look at him. He looks over at the treats that i offer through the den opening but is hesitant to lean in so i bring it closer and he begins to enjoy it while looking back at me occasionally. I placed the treats down for him and let him enjoy it in peace. I also left some catnip toy so he can play when he feels more comfy. 11/19/24 FB1261 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense and tail curled around feet. I speak to him softly and offer some treats, but after a few moments he flattens his ears and hisses. Not interested in interaction at this time. 11/21/24 FB61 Displayed similar behaviors as previous interactions. 12/01/24 Vol Jax was in his den. I removed the den cover and heard him grumbling. I spoke softly to him and put Temptations inside the den and a tray containing Squeeze Up outside. He grumbled and trembled when I tried to pet him with a pipe cleaner, retreating further into the den. I replaced the den cover and he stretched his head out of the den, trying to see the Squeeze Up. I ended the interaction and just watched him watching me from the den opening. 12/3/24 FB58 In den and hidden from view. When the cover is lifted, he is sitting hunched with a tense face and body, ears tilted, eyes wide and wary. I offer treats and he begins to low growl and I leave them for him to eat later, add him to the gaba list. 12/11/24 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense, ears tilted and tail wrapped around body. He hisses when I open the kennel door and he slowly pokes his head out of his den when offered treaties. He almost eats one - but then a new person passes by and he retreats. -GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Jax was in his cat den as the assessor approached, body and face hidden from view. Jax did not respond when spoken to or as the kennel door opened. When the assessor lifted Jax's den cover she was able to see that Jax was tense with his eyes opened very wide and his tail wrapped tightly around his body. Jax tolerated petting along his head and body from within his den while flattening his ears and spinning as if looking for an escape route. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 11/14/24 FB1261 Jax displayed similar behaviors during his reassessment. 12/14/24 During re-evaluation, Jax is in his den out of sight and hisses when the den cover is lifted for a better view. He sits with his tail wrapped around his legs, slightly tilted ears and wide eyes. Jax hisses at the pointer tool when it is introduced slowly and continues to hiss when it is brought closer in attempt to pet. He ducks and dodges the tool and very briefly tolerates petting on his head before he hisses/spits. Pick up was not attempted. Jax tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
