Animal Profile

Lena

Hello, my name is Lena. My animal id is #248697. I am a desexed female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 3/28/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Lena is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Lena was returned to the shelter due to reported mouthiness and defensive behaviors reported in the home. Lena's previous adopter reported that Lena will snap at them when trying to give oral medications and in one instance snapped when waking from a nap. No contact was reported. In care Lena has been social with staff, seeking contact, and walks well on leash. Despite being reported to be highly social during her handling assessment, Lena continues to show mouthiness and poor bite inhibition; noted to mouth a handler in her assessment with enough pressure to leave a mark (no broken skin). Lena has also been reported to grab a staff members pant leg through the kennel bars. Medically, Lena is apparently healthy.

Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only home. My foster writes: Meet Lena- also known as little miss wigglebottom or angel cakes- the ultimate velcro dog! She is the cure for loneliness in a cute package. This girl loves nothing more than to go with her people everywhere and be as close to them as possible. She is the sweetest little shadow!! Lena is gentle and polite- house trained, crate trained, a pro on the leash, and doesn't beg or mess with your things. Lena is a shy girl who needs people to take their time on introductions but once she's comfortable, she becomes the most loving (60lb) lap dog! If she's not cuddling or lying by your feet she's asking to play fetch, this girl cannot get enough! Once Lena becomes comfortable all that silly puppy playfulness comes shining. From her adorable little sniffing sounds when she's exploring to her gentle sleepy sighs, everything about this dog will make you fall in love. Lena needs some socialization but she's a sweet and playful girl ready to give kisses and love! This nine-month-old girl is so incredibly sweet. She is shy and nervous, so when she first left the shelter she pancaked to the floor. However, after a few days on her "straycation" she really started to blossom. Her favorite thing to do is sit right next to her person and shower them with affection. She has been good with people, kids, and other dogs we have seen on walks. She seems to have some mild separation anxiety, but when left in a covered crate she has been great throughout the entire night and for four-to-five-hour stretches during the day. She is housebroken and walks right next to you on the leash (no pulling!). This lady is a very loyal girl. If you want someone who loves to cuddle and is so so sweet, Lena is the dog for you! ❤️❤️

My medical notes are...

Weight: 53 lbs

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Lena so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to snapping without warning we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Lena has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Lena to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Lena's previous owner states that Lena has snapped at them without warning. During her previous stay intake and medical exams Lena was observed to be tense and tremble as well as pancake and refuse to walk on leash without significant coaxing. It is important to move slowly with Lena, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: During her walk Lena was observed to be frantic and whined intermittently throughout parts of the assessment. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
