Animal Profile

Orion

Hello, my name is Orion. My animal id is #238609. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 5 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/5/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Orion is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Orion was returned to the shelter by his previous adopter due to separation anxiety. Upon return Orion was noted to be fearful and tense bodied, but allowed handling. Despite efforts to keep Orion comfortable, he has been showing signs of deterioration in kennel as well as increased reactivity to dogs. Orion has been observed to be persistently heavily panting while in kennel, as well as finger painting his kennel with feces. Recently, Orion has been noted to be highly reactive to dogs, lunging, hard barking, with tense body. With select staff Orion is treat receptive and allows gentle petting. Medically, Orion is noted to have unspecified dermatitis but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. A volunteer writes: Our Orion may not be a giant but he's still a superhero of my heart. He's a pup quietly curious about the world, including fellow canines and new faces he encounters at the park. His leash skills could use a slight improvement - he's bit zig zaggy - but all is forgiven when our eyes meet. His eyes are so sweet that next thing I know, "my treat bag is empty but my heart is full." Being a bit shy, Orion would benefit from a quiet home where he can snuggle and shine at his own pace. Could that be yours? Another Volunteer Wrote: There is not one person who isn't in love with Orion--not ONE--because it is impossible not to fall in love with this lanky boy. He is so eager to please and so kind and gentle, and he adores all he meets--from his point of view, every human deserves snuggles, and every dog could be another friend in the making. We all talk about Orion behind his back, and it's all fawning! Orion is going to be some family's soul dog, and that family is going to be SO LUCKY!

Summary:: 2/10/26: Orion greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and soft wagging tail. Off leash he engages in soft running play.

Summary (4):: 3/5/26: Orion is standing on his kuranda bed as handler approaches, there is diarrhea on the floor his kennel, partially stepped in and spread on floor. Orion approaches when handler unlocks door, steps back at first from leash, but then steps forward after a moment and is easily leashed. Orion pulls moderately out of kennel, head turning side to side when exiting kennel room but maintains walking direction straight out of room. Orion is taken to side walk. He is somewhat social, checks in with handler visually when verbally cued but is inconsistent. He takes a treat offered but spits it out. Orion relieves himself, after some time is walked back to MACC. When re-entering kennel room he again turns his head side to side as dogs are barking but re-enters kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 3/2/26 (midday walk): (The kennel door is covered in smeared paw prints). Orion is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. he is easily lashed and brought out the room. Before exiting the building, the handler pets Orion's head, but then he shies and cowers away. The handler brings Orion to the yard. There he begins to fixate on a non reactive dog as he is brought in the second pen. The handler calls himover and Orion approaches them, but then looks back the pen, even after the dog leaves. When walking past the pen, Orion walks ahead with moderate leash tension, and pulls into the oen where the other dog was in. The handler guides him inside the building and onto the street. there, Orion sees another dog, and begins grunting while fixating on them. the handler walk Orion 9nthe opposite direction. he walks with mild to moderate leash tensin,pulling hard, if there's a dog present. Orion pulls hard when seeing another dog a few yards away. Upon entry, Orion get startled by the sound of the closing door. The leash is clipped and Orion is returned to his kennel. 3/2/26: (AM WALK) Orion is observed to be scaling his kennel walls, covering them in feces. As Orion spots the handler, he begins to sit in front of the kennel door while heavily panting. He is then easily leashed and removed from kennel, where he would pull very hard ahead of the handler and would bark towards the neighboring kennels. Orion would continue to pull hard ahead of the handler and is kept on a very short leash, shortly after he is then taken to the yard where he would continue to pull at the same strength. While in the yard, Orion would spot a dog and become tense and begin to fixate on the dog. He would then hard bark and lunge towards the direction of the dog and this would continue as more dogs would be walked around the perimeter of the yard. As handler attempts to redirect his attention, he would remain heavily fixated on the neighboring dogs. Throughout the walk, shortly after Orion would lunge and bark towards the dogs he would slightly head-whip towards the handlers hands with an open mouth. Handler then decides to return Orion due to his increased reactivity. As handler is returning him, he would continue to pull hard and is easily clipped. Orion would attempt to kennel fight with the neighboring dogs and is kept on a short leash still, once he enters his kennel he would grab a toy and begin to chew on it. Handler is able to remove their leash and interaction is ended. 3/2/26: Orion has been reported to be extreme dog reactive; he lunges, hard barks and fixates on any dog seen. Additionally, Orion, in kennel, scales the walls, covers it in feces, and heavily pants. 2/26/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Orion is "scared of getting leashed, hid in corner" on 2/25. On 2/26, it is noted that he was "eager, had no issues"

Summary (6):: 2/20/26: Orion is intermittently vocalizing when handler approaches kennel. Orion is loose, exuberant. Orion's kennel is notably soiled with feces, finger painted on ground of kennel some on kennel glass door. Orion is easily leashed, pulls moderately out of kennel. On sidewalk Orion is hypervigilant, his head is scanning left to right consistently, furrowed brow. Orion does take treats firmly when offered, allows gentle petting but mostly remains aloof with handler. Orion relieves himself, stops to sniff areas of interest. When returning to MACC Orion remains vigilant, pulling moderately and at times pulls side to side. Orion is walked back to kennel without issue, takes treats offered. 2/12/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Orion was "thrashing when trying to take to yard; stopped outside the yard and thrashed; took o street instead". 2/9/26: It was noted on the whiteboard that Orion is painting his kennel with feces. 2/8: Volunteer Note: Very nervous when handler approached the kennel at first, backing away with tail down. After coaxing with treats he came to the front. Jumped up when handler unlocked but backed away when handler opened the door. Leashed with treats. Pulled pretty hard out of kennel and in hallway. Pulled less once outside building. In the yard he stood near me but didn’t seem to want interaction beyond treats. His tail was always down and he moved in a bit of a crouch. 2/6/26: Orion is at the front of his kennel with a slightly tense body and low wagging tail. He takes treats. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the kennel room. He pulls moderately out of the building. He is hypervigilant outside and keeps his tail low. He checks in and does not accept a treat. He whines and pulls lightly towards another dog 15 feet away. He pulls moderately back through the building into his assessment (see notes) then is kenneled easily.

Summary (7):: **Previous stay notes below** 10/15/25 (For Dog-Dog interaction): Orion is at front of kennel with soft-neutral body, takes treats dropped into kennel. Orion is easily leashed, exits kennel with loose leash. Orion is social with handler, allows all petting with loose, wiggly body. Orion enters play-yard, becomes the greeter dog after first interaction. In between interactions, Orion is highly social with handlers, takes treats, sits without being verbally cued. Orion fixates and 'stalks' pigeons when they land in the play-yard and on fencing. Once dog-dog interactions are complete, Orion is easily leashed and returned to kennel. (Please see Dog-Dog notes for detailed notes). 10/7/25: Orion is at the front of his kennel with a soft body upon approach. He is easily leashed and taken out for a street walk. He would have a mild pull ahead of the handler with a loose and wiggly body. A dog would bark at Orion from across the street and Orion would continue to walk ahead with no issue. Handler would offer a treat and he would take it by snapping, handler then tossed any treat going forward on the walk. He would relieve himself with ease and is then taken back inside for his assessment. Once inside he would remain social with the handler and is collared with ease. He is then returned to kennel with no further issues.

Summary:: Fearful

Date of initial:: 10/6/2025

Summary:: Tense, trembling body but warms up with coaxing. Tolerated all tasks.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Orion so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 5): Due to fearful behavior and need for contact on his own terms we recommend a home with no young children.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Fearful,Separation anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Separation Anxiety/Destructive Behavior: Orion's previous owners note that he suffers from separation anxiety and will become destructive in the home when left alone for long periods of time. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. He would do best in a home where a person is at home for a large part of the day or with a plan so he is not alone for long periods of time. Orion will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handouts on Generalized Anxiety and Destructive Behaviors. Fearful: Orion has been observed to be fearful with a tense and trembling body. During his medical exam he warmed up with coaxing. He was also observed to warm up quickly during hi assessment. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Orion would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
