Animal Profile

Moko

Hello, my name is Moko. My animal id is #259499. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/29/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Moko is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Moko has not acclimated well to the shelter enviornment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. In his kennel, he is jumping to the top of his kennel with saliva and feces smeared across the glass. Out of the kennel, Moko has remained loose and wiggly with handlers but has displayed a low threshold for arousal, which has manifested mainly as jumping up towards staff and handlers' faces. In calmer settings, he has difficulty settling but will intermittently engage with training games. Moko recently became aroused once removed from the kennel and jumped up towards a staff member's face, and his teeth made contact with their cheek. A second handler had to assist with Moko as he attempted to continue, but they were able to quickly separate them. This did not break the skin or draw blood. Medically, Moko is reported to have chronic ear infections but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Medically, Moko is reported to have chronic ear infections but is otherwise apparently healthy. Moko was surrendered by his previous owner due to a family member being allergic. Moko was described as a social, affectionate, active, playful, and vocal dog. He is noted to prefer contact on his own terms, enjoys lounging in the living room, but has never been in a car. He enjoys playing with squeaky toys; his previous owner noted that he is shy around new people and needs time to warm up. During his stay in care, Moko has been loose and wiggly with handlers, but he has a concerning level of arousal which has manifested as persistently jumping on handlers while aiming/muzzle punching towards their face, and is intermittently mouthy. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Moko be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope partner that can address his challenges with the use of a certified professional trainer that utilizes positive reinforcement methods. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am playful and cute! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Summary:: Moko arrived as a stray, so his behavior with other dogs is unknown. 10/2/26: Moko greets a novel female dog through a barrier. Moko enters the yard in an aroused state, displaying a tense body and standing high on his toes while approaching the novel female. The novel female appears fearful but remains responsive to her handler with a slow wagging tail. Moko briefly greets before immediately choosing to disengage from the interaction.

Summary (5):: 11/5/26: Moko is jumping and putting his front paws on the kennel door and vocalizing as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. While walking he maintains a neutral body and pulls moderately. A couple of times he tries to jump toward handler's face but handler stiff armed him each time, and afterwards he continues on his way. After his walk he is returned to his kennel with no issue. 11/2: A handler enters the building to start their day as they head down the steps. Moko and an ACS walk through SDA into the hallway, heading towards the stairs the handler is walking down. Moko turns towards the ACS and launches up towards their face. The handler sees this and begins racing over as they see Moko's teeth connect with the ACS's cheek as his mouth is open. He lands and then attempts to launch up again, but the handler quickly grabs the lead that the ACS hands to them. The ACS leaves to quickly clean the kennel while a second ACS comes over with treats and a toy to offer Moko; the handler does not have any of their gear. Two other handlers arrive and take Moko from the first handler and walk him to the yard. He is able to be returned to his kennel without further issue once clean.

Summary (6):: 10/30/26 (Trainer Note): Moko is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the canine behavior office for a slat mill session. Moko is very loose and wiggly interacting with handlers readily taking treats. He places his front paws onto the mill, and his back paws onto the step up platform. He back legs stretch all the way back, pushing the platform back, and causing Moko to do somewhat of a "split", he remains loose bodied and taking treats. He is able to mount the mill using high value treats as a lure and is secured. Moko is a bit hesitant at first but will consistently walk at a steady pace. Moko maintains a loose body with a relaxed tail wag while on the mill. Handlers offer different motivators, with a box of tennis balls being of highest value to Moko. He will intermittently speed up when coaxed and would vocalize as handler would bounce a tennis ball. Moko dismounts and is returned to his kennel without issue. 10/29/26: Moko is standing at the front of his kennel and will allow the handler to leash him with ease. He will then be brought outside for an enrichment outing, where he will display some arousal by jumping up on the handler. He will be easily redirected and will eventually walk on a loose leash, exploring the neighborhood moderately ahead of the handler without pulling. He will maintain a neutral frame while exploring his surroundings. Once the decompression walk is complete, Moko will be brought back to the care center and returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 10/22/26 (Trainer Note): Moko is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. His kennel door is covered in saliva, feces, and paw prints. He is leashed and taken outside for a training session. Handler takes him to the yard where Moko is anxious, frantically moving around the play pen, and jumping up very high displaying displacement behavior. Moko is reaching eye level when jumping up and towards handlers face. He will take treats from handlers hand but will immediately load up to jump, and does not respond to a verbal "sit" cue. Handler removes Moko from the yard and takes him to the street. When stationary for a couple seconds, Moko will launch himself towards handler or jump up very high. Handler continously walks for the remainder of the training session and Moko does not attempt to jump on them again. Handler is able to work on the 123 game with movement, Moko consistently turns around and readily partcipates. He is returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 10/15/26: Moko is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to jump and bark at the door as the handler unlocks it and is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would constantly jump up high onto the handler and is able to be redirected with treats. He then continues to pull hard ahead as the walk continued. He would stare at dogs nearby and would take treats roughly from the handler's hand. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and quickly enters when treats are tossed inside. 10/13/26 (Trainer Note): Moko's kennel is painted in feces. All along the walls and the primary door, with marks reaching the top. 10/11/26 (Trainer Note): Moko is laying down on his kuranda bed with a neutral body as handler approaches. He comes to the front with a loose body and is easily leashed. He pulls moderately as he is taken to the community room for a training session. Once in the room he is very frantic, pacing around the room, whining, and jumping up extremely high towards handler. Handler has to continuously stiff arm him and keeps him on leash. Handler attempts working on the "touch" cue and 123 but Moko is onlyt able to focus for a couple seconds before walking off and whining. At one point, Moko even jumps on top of the tables and handler uses leash pressure to get him down. Handler plays a ping pong pattern game and Moko briefly engages and settles before jumping back up and muzzle punching handler in the face. Handler stiff arms him and continues tossing treats on the ground which he consumes. Moko is returned to his kennel without issue. 10/4/26: Moko is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease, and he pulls hard on the way to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he has a super wiggly body and wagging tail as he explores around, causing him to have happy tail. He is comfortable approaching the handler’s while having a wiggly body, and would constantly jump up on the handler's very high up. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the high level of jumping and anxiety seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. No cats: Due to Moko's previous owners reporting that he barks at cats and lunges and snaps at small animals while on walks, we recommend a home with no cats at this time. Recommend no dog parks: Due to Moko's behavior in playgroup, we recommend he does not visit dog parks. Place With a New Hope Partner: Moko has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has displayed increasingly concerning levels of arousal with handlers. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Moko's previous owners report that he rarely has accidents, but he may need guidance and consistency around house training in a future home. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House soiling. Basic manners/poor impulse control and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Moko's previous owners report that he jumps up frequently and can be mouthy. Simialr behaviors were displayed during his handling assessment. He was osberved to easily become frustrated when his leash was held. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control her impulses instead of simply reacting, as well as lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Moko performs undesirable behaviors). Proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/impulse control and mouthiness. Handling/touch sensitivity: Moko's previous owners report that he is fearful when his paws are touched or collar is grabbed. It is important to always go slow and give dog the option to walk away from any interaction; he should never be forced to submit to petting or handling. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Moko's previous owners report that he barks and lunges at unfamiliar dogs on walks. Moko may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Separation anxiety: Moko's previous owners report that he has separation anxiety. While we do not know the nature or extent of this behavior, in a home environment. When left alone she bark and whines constantly and has chewed a home through the wall. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. Low threshold for arousal: Moko has jumped up and hit handler's in their face on multiple occasssions during his stay in care. Whether during training sessions, walks, or his behavior assessment. Please see handout on arousal.
