Animal Profile

Jack-O-Lantern

Hello, my name is Jack-O-Lantern. My animal id is #209517. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/7/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Jack-O-Lantern is at risk due to behavior concerns. Jack arrived at the care center as an owner surrender. During intake Jack was friendly and outgoing with staff, jumping socially and taking treats gently. In the care center, Jack continues to jump on staff but is redirected with treat scatters. Jack was observed to hyper salivate, hard pant and bite and tug on his leash in kennel but has slightly improve. Outside of his kennel he remains anxious-hypersalivating and fixating on staff treats pouch, and has begun kennel fighting with multiple instances of him spinning back on the handler, with an open mouth but not making contact. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Jack is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Jack is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Jack is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Jack.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners, and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Jack's previous owner states that he jumps up on people and strangers persistently. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: Jack has been observed to pull towards the other dog in the kennel room after reacting Jack jumped towards the handler. Jack will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Jack has been observed to bite and tug the leash in kennel. This behavior is not easily able to be redirected. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
