Max
Hello, my name is Max. My animal id is #220408. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/11/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMax was brought to the Care Center following a bite incident involving his owner. All that is known of the bite is that it was to the owner's hip area and it broke skin, with active bleeding. During his time at the Care Centers, Max has been mostly aloof but easily walked by staff. At times, he will kennel fight and focus on dogs with a tense body and at other times, he will ignore the other dogs. Medically, Max is healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

During his stay in the care center Max is aloof with handlers - showing minimal interest in attention. He will take treats gently when on walks - and in one instance he became loose and wiggly when with staff. While he has been slowly opening up with staff, Max is looking for a soft place to land where he can decompress, relax, snack on treats daily, and finally feel at home.

Summary (6):: 2/26/25: Max is at the front of his kennel barking at handler as they approach. He is leashed while distracted using a squeaker and pulls hard out of kennel, he is taken to the street for his walk. During Max's walk he pulls moderately and stops frequently to sniff and uses the bathroom while outside. He walks past people on the street without issue and when offered treats will briefly sniff before refusing. When Max sees other dogs he will pull towards them and is difficult to redirect with treats or squeakers. If line of sight is broken he will continue walking after taking a moment. Max is walked for a while before being brought back to the shelter. He allows clipping and pulls hard back inside towards the dog kennels, handler keeps him away and returns him without further issue. 2/25/25: Max is laying towards the front of his kennel when the handler approaches. He gently takes a treat through the kennel bars before being easily leashed and taken out to the yard. He sniffs at a dog in the first pen before relieving himself and entering the second pen without issue. He poses for photos and takes treats, accepting pets. He picks up a toy before following the handler over to to bench and jumping up to solicit more pets. Easily led back to his kennel and returned without issue. 2/19/25: Max is at the front of kennel with a neutral body and barking as handler approaches. Max is attempting to kennel fight the neighboring dog through the wall as handler attempts to leash. Treats and toys are unsuccessful at luring. Handler is able to leash and removes Max from kennel. He pulls very hard towards the yard. In the yard he relieves himself and remains neutral bodied throughout interaction. He sniffs his surroundings and walks around the pen as he is kept on leash. He is uninterested in handler. As he spots a dog through the fence, he darts towards them with a forward posture almost on his hind legs, hackles raised, and very tense body. Handler has to use muscle to pull him away. He is kept distant from any other dog entering the yard area. He is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 2/17/25: Max is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches his kennel. He is able to be leashed with ease and taken to the yard. In the yard, he constantly would sniff to mark his territory and didn't have any interest in the dog in the pen next to him. He was then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. He became loose and wiggly in the room and would jump on the handler and became aroused. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He was hesitant to return back to kennel. 2/13/25: Max is standing at the front of the kennel when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the yard where he relieves himself quickly. Max has a neutral body and sniffs around, while marking intermittently. He walks with a loose leash and is aloof towards the handler. He is not receptive to treats. When seeing another dog, Max becomes tense with a forward body. This behavior is able to be easily redirected with coaxing. When returning to kennel Max pauses in front, handler tosses treats but Max is not receptive. Handler uses mild leash pressure and Max enters kennel. 2/12/25: Max is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out to the yard for a walk. He keeps his distance from handlrs and remains neutral throughout walked. He sniffs around his surroundings and relives himself. He allows and does not react when handlers clip him, and he is returned to kennel without issue. 2/11/25- When handlers approached Max in the pop up crate in the cop car he had his back to them with a neutral body. They held out treats which he took gently and he allowed handlers to put 2 leashes on him. He jumped out of the cop car and sniffed around. He relieved himself and had a neutral body throughout the walk inside. He was taken to the K9 behavior office and handlers tossed treats. Max just sniffed them and when they attempted to unclip the leash around his neck, he would turn to look at handlers with no vocalization. Handlers spray cheese on the couch which momentarily licked at. Handlers applied slight pressure to the leashes and a third handler was able to unclip the leash around his neck. He was easily clipped by both handlers. He slowly made his way to the kennel just looking at the dogs in passing in the room with no vocalization or cage fighting. He planted for a moment outside his kennel and handlers applied some pressure to their leashes, Max went in and leashes removed without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Max so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to bite history we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Max has been observed to jump up on handler. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
