Animal Profile

Celina

Hello, my name is Celina. My animal id is #252316. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 7 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/5/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Celina is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of petting-induced aggression. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of petting-induced aggression. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. At the time of assessment, Celina did not tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she is a friendly and affectionate lap cat, following her family around, and will be very cuddly and hopping on shoulders once she warms up to her people, in a home environment - the behaviors are considered to be shelter specific, and she would make a great pet but struggles in shelter. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience, willing to work with a cat to help them adjust and settle in. Celina is a gorgeous tabby girl with a playful spirit, bright personality, and lots of love waiting beneath the surface. ✨🐾 Shelter life has been overwhelming for her, so she's still learning to feel safe here. But according to her previous family, once Celina settles into a home, she transforms into an affectionate cuddle bug who follows her people around, hops onto shoulders, and happily curls up as a lap cat. This lively girl loves toys, activities, and interactive play, and she's looking for a patient, cat-savvy adopter who will give her the time and understanding she needs to blossom again. With a little patience, Celina promises to reward her future person with companionship, affection, and plenty of personality. If you're ready to help a sensitive girl rediscover her confidence, Celina could be your perfect match. 🩷

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/9/26 FB79 At the top part of the kennel, Celina has a mid level tail with her eyes soft when I entered the kennel; she turned to look at me and leaned into the tool that I was holding out with treats near her. She sniffed them when I placed them down but then looked up harshly hissing at the tool and jumping down to the main part of the kennel where she stood with a high tail and wide eyes. 5/15/26 FB79 In her comfy bed, Celina has a relaxed/neutral body and her eyes wide with forward ears; she watched closely as I opened the kennel door and her ear titled slightly. I reached in with the tool which she had no reaction to until I attempted to pet - Celina pulled her head away and looked up at the tool followed by shifting her weight and moving away towards the back. I attempted petting once again and she ducked it quickly. I left a toy with some catnip at the front of her kennel. 5/17/26 Vol. Celina was sitting at the front of the kennel, calling out to me. As soon as the door opened, she approached me and allowed all petting. She did not eat the Temptations offered to her. As I petted her, she suddenly turned towards my hand and gave a brief hiss and growl. I closed the door and returned with the scratcher tool. I used it to pet her and she began to eat her Temptations. When she had eaten a few, she went to lie in her bed, with her head on the edge. She may be susceptible to becoming over stimulated when being petted. 5/19/26 FB58 Freaky girl! She is laying in her bed with a soft face and body. She slow-blinks and I use the laser as play therapy - she does not engage physically but she stalks the laser by watching it and begins chirping. She moves when the door opens and she allows and leans in for pets with the scratcher tool - even along her sides. She comes to the front of the kennel with her tail high an quivering and she continues to accept all pets with the scratcher, even when applied to her belly and sides. She eats her treatie reward and she tenses and grumbles when pick up is attempted. Has potential!! 5/22/26 FB79 Laying in her bed, Celina is comfy with a relaxed body and neutral face when she looked up at me after entering the kennel; she didn't care for any treats as she looked around the room behind me w her ears slightly tilting as i spoke o to her. I ran the tool down and around her body as well as on her head abfore her ears then flattened to her head. 5/27/26 FB61 Sitting upright in front of kennel, calm with her ears forward and her tail curled lightly around her feet. She tolerates petting along her head and body with the scratcher tool while raising her tail and turning her head to watch the scratcher tool, the skin along her lower back rippling. She does appear to be sensitive to touch. She is rewarded with treats and the session ends.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Sweet,Insistent,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: During Celina's initial assessment, she displayed some conflicting behaviors and generally appeared to be more concerned with the room and slipping out of the cage to explore. She approached the assessor with a low and slightly tense body and sniffed their hand. She allowed pets along her head, cheeks, and back and seemed to lean in slightly but her attention was not focused on the interaction with the assessor. When she was allowed out, she began to growl as she was lifted to be placed back in the cage but tolerated it and did not escalate. Once placed back in she paused, before turning to look at the assessor and hissing, and then jumped onto the shelf. Her previous owner notes that she: prefers contact on her own terms, may swat/growl if boundaries are pushed, but is curious. She is described as a friendly and affectionate lap cat who can be very bold, active, and playful as well. She is known to be very cuddly once she warms up to her people, loves sleeping on blankets and hopping up on her family’s shoulders or on other high up places. Based off of this information and her initial interaction, she most likely is a cat that may take some time to adjust to her new home and family but isn't necessarily displaying the traditional "fearful" behaviors that the behavior team would classify in order to select "fearful" - however she certainly may be more of an independent cat as she she investigates her surroundings and gets comfortable and confident in her new turf. Upon meeting with Celina again, she presents with signs of pet induced aggression. She is at the front of the cage and appears interested in interacting with the assessor, ears forward and tail raised as she allows one pet along the top of her head with their hand before hissing harshly once it gets near her shoulder/back. When the Assess-A-Hand is used, she is very interested in getting out of the cage, tolerates touch on her head but once touched along her side with the fake hand, she immediately turns and bites the hand multiple times while vocalizing. As the hand moves to be pulled back, she readjusts from the back of the cage and pins it down with both paws and again bites and holds multiple times. This sensitivity to particular areas being touched and immediate and intense reactivity indicates that she is most likely displaying Pet Induced Aggression. Please see flyer for Pet Induced Aggression vs. Overstimulation.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behaviors observed in shelter, her reported behaviors with strangers/visitors (preferring contact on her own terms - swatting/growling if boundaries pushed), and lack of experience with children - the behavior team feels Celina would do best in an Adult Only home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/08/26 On approach, Celina is sitting on her shelf with a somewhat neutral face and body, ears forward and tail loosely wrapped around her feet. As the cage door is opened, she approaches the front of the shelf slowly with eyes somewhat wide and dilated, and holds her body low and slightly tense. She sniffs the hand offered to her and accepts pets on her head and cheeks, leaning the smallest bit into the touch as she pokes her head out of the cage to look around the room. She generally appears more interested in investigating the room and trying to slip out to explore it throughout the interaction. The assessor is able to coax her down into the main area of the cage with treats and she continues to accept more pets along her head and down her back with her tail raised, still trying to slip out of the cage. The assessor allows her to with their hands still making contact with her, and when they lift her up to place her back in the cage, she begins to growl. Once placed back in the cage, she pauses for a moment before turning to face the assessor and hissing once and then jumps up onto the shelf. 5/19/26 Upon meeting with Celina again, she is laying in her bed with a neutral face and body, ears forward. She comes to the front of the cage with her tail raised and seems curious as she solicits attention. When the door is opened, she is quick to try and press her head through the door opening to look around the room, and accepts on pet with the assessor's hand along the top of her head before she tenses and hisses harshly as the assessor's hand gets near her shoulders and back. She then hisses and low growls with her ears tilted and the assessor pauses the interaction for a moment. When they return with the Assess-A-Hand and open the cage door again, she is tolerant of her head being touched with the tool but as it moves past her head, she tenses and backs away with a lowered body. When contact is made with her side, she hisses and growls before biting the tool and holding on, readjusting and biting again. She moves towards the back of the cage and vocalizes, and as fake hand is being pulled back out of the cage, she moves forward and pins it down with both paws to again bite and hold multiple times. She presents with touch sensitivity and a significant and immediate escalation to vocalizing and biting/scratching - due to this behavior she is believed to show signs of pet induced aggression. Pick up was not attempted.
