Bite history:: Bella has snapped multiple times before when the muzzle has been placed on her but the bites previously have never broken skin until the incident on the 17th. On December 17th, Bella's owner and their partner, were attempting to place a muzzle over their dog Bella Rose; they were on their way outside and were going to walk Bella. The partner was holding on to Bella's body and the owner was close to Bella's face when they was trying to pull the muzzle and close it over her. Bella started to give warnings such as growling, body becoming tense and snapping before she made contact. Bella whipped her head to prevent the muzzle from being placed; biting the owner and immediately released after biting. This bite did break skin. No medical attention outside of the home was sought out by the victim. A few days ago (Around 12/20/25), the owners partner was playing with Bella Rose, the play involved using their hands and lightly play tapping her face and body. Bella Rose became overly stimulated and excited during the play, she was starting to mouth at the partner's arm lightly at first, Bella Rose would then grab onto the arm of the partner a little roughly but immediately released. This did not result in broken skin, however play was immediately ended afterwards. Summary:: Bella Rose 244060 Bella was recently surrendered to the care center due to a bite incident in the home. Bella’s previous owner states that Bella is not comfortable when they are placing a muzzle on her or taking it off. They state that she will become fearful and escalate to snapping, growling, baring teeth, and biting. They state that Bella has bitten multiple times before when the muzzle was being put on her but they previously did not break skin. On the 17th of December Bella’s previous owner were attempting to place the muzzle on. Bella became tense, growled, head whipped, and snapped before biting. This bite was a bite and release that broke skin. No medical attention was sought. Around the 20th of December, the owner’s partner was playing with Bella, the play involved using their hands and lightly play tapping her face and body. Bella became over aroused during the play, she was starting to mouth at the partner's arm lightly at first, Bella then grabbed onto the arm of the partner a little roughly but immediately released. This did not result in broken skin; however, play was immediately ended afterwards. Bella’s previous owner also states that she will bark, growl, and bite when held/ restrained. Will bark and growl when startled or when her collar is grabbed. Will snap when paws are touched. And that she will also bite when pushed off furniture. Bella’s previous owners also state that she will bite strangers that approach, and will jump up to bite the leash while on walks. Due to the multiple bite history, and the other behaviors reported, the behavior team does not feel that Bella is a safe candidate for a handling assessment.
Summary:: 1/6/26: Bella Rose greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and soft wagging tail.
Summary (6):: 1/5/26: ACS report that while on leash Bella Rose will jump at the handler. 12/30/25: Bella Rose is at the front of her kennel with a soft body the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings her to the driveway, where she is walked around. Bella Rose walks with little to no leash tension, and when she sees other dogs, she doesn't react. Upon entry, Bella Rose sniffs a unfamiliar handler with a soft body. When walking to the room, Bella pulls past and enters the office. When she enters, Bella immediately lies down. As she lies down, the leash goes under her paw, and as the handler attempts to untangle by lifting her paw, Bella slightly mouths her hand. When the handler stops, Bella stands up and the leash untangles itself. The handler then brings Bella to the room and returns her with ease. 12/29/25: Bella Rose displays the same behaviors as of (12/28). Please refer to those notes. 12/28/25: Bella Rose is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and he pulls hard on the way to the yard. In the yard, she is able to be transferred to a drag lead and explored around the pen with a loose and wiggly body. She would jump up on the handler and up on the bench. She would sit for treats and catches them in the air. She is comfortable receiving a few pets and is able to return back to her kennel with no issues. 12/23/25: Bella Rose is at the front of the kennel, low head and low body. Handler presents the leash and she remains at the front and tenses as the leash is gently placed over her head. She is easily removed from kennel and walked in the yard. She allows handler to place a drag leash on her and she wanders the pen then comes back and sits on the bench. She sniffs handlers hands and allows brief petting along her torso. She is easily re-leashed. She baulks in the hall outside the kennel room but follows handler when jogged in. She stops outside of her kennel, sniffs around then climbs in on her own. 12/22/25: Bella Rose is standing at the front of her kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. She is able to be slowly leashed as she backs away. She is then slowly taken to the yard. In the yard, she has a tense body and low tail as she explores around. She is comfortable approaching the handler and would jump up with a tense body and low wagging tail. On the way back to her kennel, she begins to baulk and thrash on leash. When a second handler comes with a belly band, she would jump up on the handler to receive pets and is able to then be belly banded and taken back to kennel
Summary (7):: 12/21/25- Bella Rose was sitting at the front of her kennel with a slight tense body, handler presented a treat but she just sniffed at it. Handler held their hand and and she leaned to sniff at them. Handler slowly opened her kennel door and Bella sat at the front, not moving from her spot. She was easily leashed and handler fully opened her kennel door. Bella just kept sitting in the same spot, handler bent down and softly spoke to her while they scratch her chin. They offered another treat but again showed no interest. She allowed handler to slowly collar her at the front of her kennel and handler clipped their slip lead to it, undoing the lead around her neck. After a few moments handler stood up and Bella stood up, she looked both ways while sticking her head out with a mildly tense body, ears pinned. Handler moved further away and continued to softly speak to Bella, she would stick a paw out but then put it back in the kennel. Handler gave her a few more moments, talking to her. She then slowly exited the kennel trying to go towards the neighboring kennel to sniff at the dog next to hers, handler gave slight tug away from the other kennel door. They feed treats to the neighboring kennel dog as they just stared at her. She then slowly walked, exiting the room. Bella is taken to the play yard and placed on a drag leash. She is aloof with handler, doesn't take any treats and sniffs around the pen with a tense body, looking around with a low tail and ears pinned. Handler sat on the bench, she came by when she was sniffing and leaned to sniff handlers shoe and leg. Handler gently scratched her neck and her back then stopped. Bella didn't solicit any more pets so handler ceased petting her. After some time she paws at one of the gates in the pen, handler is able to leash and unclip her collar. When returning her to the room she starts to baulk, slightly thrashing. Handler stopped and gave her a moment, they offered treats again but no interest. When handler goes again to enter the room Bella again baulks. Handler applies pressure to her collar and Bella hesitantly reenters the room. She plants momentarily when walking down the aisle to her kennel, she readily goes into kennel and allows handler to unclip her collar without issue. 12/21/25: Bella Rose is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is hesitant of being leashed and would back away and shake off the leash each time the handler attempted to get the loop over her head. Once leashed, the handler moves over to the side and tries to coax her forward with treats and a squeaker. She continues to have a tense body while shaking as she pops her head out of kennel. She is hesitant to step her paw out of kennel and would constantly back away. Due to fearfulness, the handler retrieves their leash back and close the door
Date of intake:: 12/20/2025

Date of initial:: 12/20/2025
Summary:: Neutral body in kennel, opted to sedate due to bite
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Bella Rose's handling sensitivity reported by previous owner, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope Partner: Due to Bella Rose's history of escalating to biting, we recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Partner.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Bella's previous owner states that she is destructive in the home, with items such as furniture, walls, shoes, etc. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Bella will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Social Hyperarousal/ Mouthiness: Bella's has been noted to become aroused during play and mouth handler with pressure. Bella should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Bella. Please see handout on Arousal. Handling Sensitivity: Bella's previous owner states that she will escalate to barking, growling, snapping, and biting when handled. For example when held/ restrained, and when her paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Bella to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Multiple Bite History/ Bite History: Escalating to biting is a behavior that Bella has rehearsed repeatedly over their life. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Bell'a repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Bella and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Separation Anxiety/ Anxiety: Bella's previous owner states that she will bark a lot and will become anxious when left alone. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Bella's previous owner states that she will attempt to bite strangers that approach. bella will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Bella's previous owner states that she will jump up and bite the leash during walks. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Leash Pulling: Bella's previous owner states that she pulls hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
