Bite history:: On 8/4/26, Lucas was returned after biting the adopter's partner on the face when they bent down to pet Lucas. The bite did not break the skin. Details about the incident are conflicting as the adopter later stated that the bite did not break skin. Lucas is reported to have bitten the resident's small dog due to his resource guarding. The small dog had gotten close to Lucas's food. He was reported to have growled, barked, and /or snarled before escalating to biting the small dog. This bite drew blood, was a bite and release, and occurred 3/24/26.

Summary:: Lucas arrived at as owner surrender and is noted to be tolerant of other dogs. 7/23/26: Lucas greets a novel female dog off leash through a barrier. Lucas approaches the gate displaying a stiff body, raised hackles, and wide eyes while observing the novel female. He then disengages and walks away before choosing to reapproach the barrier. Upon reengaging, Lucas continues to display the same tense body language and frequently looks upward, largely ignoring the novel female. The interaction is ended without further escalation.

Summary (6):: 08/26/26 (KSV): Lucas is standing at the front of his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He begins to low growl as handler comes closer. Handler offers treats through kennel bars but he bares his teeth and snarls. Interaction is ended. 8/20/26: (KSV) Lucas is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He hard stares at the handler until the treats inside. He is comfortable eating the treats and would then stare at the ground until the handler tosses more inside. He would stare at the handler when they would toss treats towards the back of the kennel. He eventually walks away towards the treats and is comfortable re-approaching the front. He begins to have a loose tail as he engages in eating more treats. The handler then walks away and ends the interaction

Summary (7):: 7/22/26: Lucas was laying in the back right corner of his kennel as the handler approaches. Lucas got up and came to the front of the kennel with a big stretch. The handler was able to leash Lucas with ease and exit the building. During the walk Lucas slightly pulled past when passing another dog. As the handler continued the walk Lucas passed 3 pedestrians relaxed with no reaction and is returned to his kennel. 7/17/26 (Trainer Note): Lucas is sitting at the front left corner of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He stands and comes to the front with a loose body and is easily leashed. He is taken to the street for a training session. Lucas remains alert and aloof throughout his walk, moderately pulling on leash. Once in a more quiet area, Lucas is able to intermittently engage using high value treats. He paws and intensely sniffs ant handlers closed fists but quickly disengages and is rewarded. He loses interest and handler continues on walk before returning him to the care center without issue. 7/12/26: Lucas is at the back of the kennel laying on the ground as the handler approaches,. He will get up and approach the front with a loose frame. Lucas is leashed easily and brought out on a walk where he will pull mildly towards objects he wants to sniff. He is aloof throughout the majority of the walk but will come over when coaxed and will allow petting along his back. He will disengage after a consent check and is returned to his kennel with no issue. 07/10/26 (Trainer Note): Lucas is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. He is loose and social with the handlers, leaning into contact. The handler works with him on the leave it cue and he is intermittently able to engage. By the end of the session he can leave a treat in a flat hand. Lucas is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 7/5/26: Lucas is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought out on a walk. Lucas is neutral bodied throughout the walk as many dogs pass at a distance. He will relieve himself and explore throughout the walk and is then returned to kennel with no issue. 6/29/26: Lucas is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would explore around with sniffing and has a tense body while being petted. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.

He will also have a tense body or hover over the items. Lucas was reported to have bitten the resident's small dog when they approached his food. This bite did draw blood. Destructive behavior: Lucas is reported to have destructive tendencies in the previous home (furniture, walls, shoes, household items, etc.) We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior, but we suggest to future adopters that Lucas will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Lucas is reported to jump up often in the previous home. During the jog portion of his assessment, he jumped on the assessor with his mouth open. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Lucas is reported to lunge at strangers who approach and during walks. During his medical exam, he began growling during approach. It is important to move slowly with Lucas to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression and On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Bite history (human): Lucas was reported to have bitten the previous adopter's partner on the nose when they attempted to introduce themselves to him by petting him while he was laying on the ground. They pet him on his neck, behind his ears. Lucas reportedly lunged up and bit. The adopter initially said that the bite did break skin, then stated it did not.
