Animal Profile

Bailey

Hello, my name is Bailey. My animal id is #227868. I am a desexed female black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 7/27/2025.

Bailey is at risk for behavior reasons. Bailey was recently adopted and returned for being very mouthy, repeatedly mouthing at their ankles. In care she is deteriorating, spinning in circles, leash-biting and mouthing at staff members' clothing. Soft toys help manage her behavior in care for the time being, but she needs placement outside of the stressful shelter environment. Medically, she is a healthy dog.

Soft toys help manage her behavior in care for the time being, but she needs placement outside of the stressful shelter environment. Medically, she is a healthy dog. Bailey is a fun-loving, high-energy pup looking for an equally enthusiastic forever home! This young girl is full of life and loves to be where the action is. Whether she's chasing a ball, going for a hike, or just romping around the yard, Bailey is happiest when she's moving. Bailey is also playful and can be a bit mouthy when she gets excited, so she'll do best with a family who understands young, energetic dogs and can help her keep learning good manners. She's eager to please and will benefit from consistent positive training. Because of her energy and intelligence, Bailey will need both physical and mental exercise to keep her happy and balanced. If you're looking for a bright, bouncy companion to share your adventures, Bailey might just be your perfect match.

Summary:: 8/4 Bailey meets unaltered male LMB at the gate. She has a forward posture and forward facing ears. Bailey's face is relaxed with a high waging tail. She paws at the gate and is easily walked away. 7/17: Bailey met an unaltered male dog through a gate. She approached with a soft body and greeted the other dog, sniffing at him through the gate. She remained soft and was easily walked away.

Summary (5):: 8/12 Bailey is jumping up and down at the front of the kennel. She is leashed and given a squeaky octopus toy to bring out to the yard. In the yard, she plays the trading game with two tennis balls, chasing the thrown ball the length of the yard. Intermittently, she drops the ball on return and jumps in the pool. When she returns without a ball, she puts her mouth on staff's hand but with no force but then backs off when she realizes there is no object in the hand. When it is time to go back in she is leashed but rope bites and bites at the tongue of staff's boot and needs to be distracted with the octopus toy again. Once out of the yard and the metal ring is clipped she is then returned easily. 8/11 Two toys are left outside of Bailey's kennel for her to choose from. She is easily leashed; Bailey approaches the toys, takes one and keeps it in her mouth while walking. She occasionally stops during the walk to stare at random objects. Bailey is led back towards the building. When entering the building, she becomes distracted by a dog in the run. Bailey drops her toys and is led inside. Bailey is easily returned to her kennel and unleashed.

Summary (6):: 8/10: Bailey is given a soft toy as she exits her kennel. She carries it into the hall then drops it. Staff picks up the soft toy and she grabs one end, she is led outside with the toy and a drag leash attached. She explores on her own. A treat is used to lure her through the loop of the slip lead. The toy is tossed but she leaves it in the yard. 8.9 Bailey is jumping at the kennel door upon arrival. She is easily leashed and brought to the yard. She runs around, exploring. After some time in the yard, Bailey begins to get mouthy with the staff member, biting at their ankles and shoes. Staff redirects Bailey's attention by throwing toys, which distracts her temporarily. When it is time to return, Bailey begins rope biting and is biting the rope when walking back into the building. When she is returned to her kennel, she is given a toy, which she chews on. 8.6 Bailey is at the front of her kennel, jumping against the glass with a soft and exuberant body when approached. She is easily roped and given a soft toy to walk with, which she drops several times. Bailey is walked and has a soft body and pulls a mild amount. After bailey relives herself she is given the soft toy again and holds it for the rest of the walk. Bailey walks nicely and remains calm for the entire walk. Bailey is easily returned to her kennel.

Summary (7):: 8.5: Bailey is at the front of her kennel when approached and is easily leashed, Bailey is taken for a walk and she walks with a soft body and moderate pulling. Once she relives herself she becomes exuberant and attempts to grab the staffs pants cuff. She then begins rope biting and holding onto the rope, not letting go until back at the shelter. She is easily returned to her kennel. 8/3/25: Bailey is at kennel front upon arrival. She is easily leashed and brought on a walk. She explores, sniffing, pausing to relieve herself. Bailey walks nicely on leash, remaining close in front of staff. When stopped, Bailey is loose-bodied and accepts pets. At one point, she lays down and begins trying to playfully roll in the grass. Staff coaxes her back up and walks with her back to the building. Bailey goes directly into her kennel and eats the treats that were left for her. *Bailey was moved to a kennel closer to front due to previous reports of kennel fighting and going after other dog's paws through the bottoms of kennels when exiting.* 7.29: Bailey is at the front of her kennel when approached. She is loose body and exuberant when walking through the halls of the shelter. In the yard Bailey allows staff to fit and collar her. She is kept on leash and stays close to the staff. Bailey has a soft and exuberant body when being pet, leaning into pets. She does quickly put her mouth around the staff members hands but does not apply any pressure. 07.23: Handler attempts to place food bowl in kennel and Baily slips by and is loose in the room. She ignores neighboring dog and waits at the door where she is easily leashed. She is brought outside for a walk. She sniffs around and then is brought to the yard. She follows handler around and lens into petting when offered. She is easily returned to kennel. 7.20.25: Bailey is at the front of her pop up and tires to push pass staff when they take her out. She has a loose body as she is brought to the yard. In the yard Bailey has an exuberant body and engages in play, playing with the hose and chasing thrown balls. They approach the staff member exuberantly jumping against them, then gently lean into pets. Bailey attempts to balk slightly when returning to her pop up, but walks in on her own.

Summary:: tense but allowed all handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: Bailey is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Bailey.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Bailey was returned due to mouthiness in her recently adoptive home. She should go to an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: MOUTHINESS/POOR BITE INHIBITION Bailey was briefly adopted before being returned for mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. She became very mouthy particularly with the adopter's ankles when she was brought into the home. Bailey should be provided with provided with proper toys and enrichment items. If she puts her teeth on skin, we recommend separating her from yourself as this is not appropriate. She should go to an owner familiar with handling this behavior. Please see handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. HANDLING/TOUCH SENSITIVITY Bailey was reported to be uncomfortable with their feet being touched in the previous home. It is important to avoid touching Bailey's paws at this time. Positive reinforcement, reward-based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Bailey to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. FEARFUL Bailey is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Bailey the option to walk away from any social interaction. Pam should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Pam’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Bailey would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on fearfulness. LEASH-BITING Bailey is reported to grab the leash in her mouth at the previous home. We recommend walking her with a toy to dissuade her from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach her to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on leash manners.
