Animal Profile

Tigger

Hello, my name is Tigger. My animal id is #208595. I am a male tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 3 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/25/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Tigger is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of severe FAS and may only tolerate touch when distracted with treats. He no longer tolerates staff's handling attempts. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes! Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! A volunteer writes: Tigger loves to cuddle with his favorite people, he plays gently, will run after moths and bottle caps, and is curious about other cats. I love reading Tigger's notes but, as it sometimes happens, they're a little different than the cat I see in front of me. Tigger has shown lots of progress with us - meowing when spoken to, coming forward for pets and even leaning against visitors and purring in appreciation, but the shelter can be a lot. For all that's done to make the Care Center warm and welcoming, I imagine it can seem a bit too big when you don't understand everything that's going on. Tigger was brought to us because of his person's housing issues and adjusting to shelter life has been slow and steady. He's a really special guy and we're all hopeful that someone will see the wonderful kitty inside and give him a chance.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/3/24 -NHO* Upon approach Tigger was in his cubby hissing with airplane ears. He licked a high-value treat then swatted at the scratch tool it was on. The assessor left the tool motionless and he growled and swatted a couple more times. After a moment to reset, the assessor tried giving him the treat on the tool through the cubby. He hissed, growled and repeatedly struck the tool with force. 10/22/24-Level 2* Initially, Tigger was timid and stressed during his first few days at the care center. However, with daily socialization, he gradually acclimated and understood the routine. During the assessment, Tigger was found resting on top of a ledge. When approached and spoken to softly, he responded with gentle meows and engaged with the assessor. His body language was relaxed, with his tail held high. He enjoyed high-value treats throughout the assessment and displayed affection by head bunting and leaning against the assessor's hand while purring. When picked up, Tigger remained neutral, and after being placed back down, he continued to tolerate and seek more attention. 11/21/24- Level 3* Tigger was asleep, curled up in his top cubby when the assessor approached. He perked up with alert ears, slow blinked and stretched his front paw out. The assessor softly spoke and started to initiate contact with a scratcher tool. Tigger sniffed the tool and slowly raised his paw. As the tool got closer to petting his head, he leans back when receiving cheek rubs, hissed and fully swatted at the tool. He backed up in the cubby with flat ears and lip licked. The assessor tried to approach with their hand and Tigger harshly hissed and swatted as well. After giving a few seconds to recover and calm down, the assessor offered treats, which Tigger eagerly ate and was able to stroke once on the head. Tigger then hissed again and the interaction ended. Pick up was not attempted to reduce FAS. Tigger's behavior has deteriorated since the previous assessment. He used to solicit/engage with attention and tolerated all petting and handling. However at this time will only tolerate brief petting when distracted with treats. Tigger may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
