This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Erasmus needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a sweet boy with diabetic ketoacidosis. He is eating but needs monitoring in a veterinary clinic until his insulin dose is regulated. Looking for a fluffy, sweet, and hilariously playful couch companion? Look no further than Erasmus, a charismatic long-haired gentleman with a big personality and an even bigger heart. Erasmus is the kind of cat who brings life to your home with his curious nature and goofy play habits. He's affectionate, a bit of a lap cat, and loves to be where the people are-whether that's lounging in the living room or supervising you from the kitchen. He especially enjoys crinkly toys, a good game of fetch (yes, really!), and learning tricks for treats. While Erasmus is friendly and outgoing, he does play rough and can sometimes get carried away with nipping or swatting-especially if overstimulated. He prefers interactions on his own terms and needs time (up to 2 weeks) to warm up to new people and pets. He has lived with adults, a cat, and a small dog before, and was tolerant with all-just keep in mind his play style is more "wrestle buddy" than "gentle snuggler." From previous owners: He's the dog I never had-sweet, cute, fluffy, and playful. He doesn't hiss or scratch aggressively-he's just a little rough around the edges with playtime. As a domestic longhair, Erasmus requires regular grooming, particularly around his rear end, as he has had issues with cleanliness due to coat maintenance. He does not enjoy brushing and may nip or bite during grooming, so an experienced or patient adopter is ideal. Erasmus has never had his nails trimmed before and may struggle with carrier travel.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Sweet,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Please note that this cat is being treated for a medical condition at the time of evaluation. It is difficult to determine at this time how the medical condition may be affecting the behavior. Reported rough play and overstimulation when petted or brushed that escalates to Erasmus nipping or biting, which can break skin. Due to Erasmus being a long-haired cat, frequent grooming sessions are necessary, which means that the adopter should be experienced with how to manage Erasmus' potential to escalate.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children,No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old and no cats due to reports of rough play and overstimulation.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Erasmus was resting in the den in loaf position with a neutral body and eyes. He sniffs the assessor's hand when reaching close and welcomes petting on the head. He slightly leans in for cheek rubs and he turns his head to sniff the assessor's arm when stroking his body. When applying gentle upward pressure on his side and chest, lifting him up to the ceiling of the den, he remains calm but tenses up a little bit. After placing him back down, he continues to tolerate more petting and attention. Erasmus interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. He has a history of rough play and overstimulation that may escalate to nipping or biting, which can break skin. He may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior reported, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
