Animal Profile

Beauty

Hello, my name is Beauty. My animal id is #204554. I am a desexed female black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 6 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/7/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - destructive tendencies.

Beauty is at risk for behavior reasons. Beauty is highly anxious in the care center. Based on her owner surrender profile it seems as though she is very anxious in the home environment at well making it difficult to manage her destructive behavior. In care she has been sweet and highly social with staff and volunteers although she can be fearful at first and requires a slow approach. Medically, she has early periodontitis but is otherwise healthy.

Based on her owner's surrender profile, it seems as though she is very anxious in the home environment as well, making it difficult to manage her destructive behavior. Medically, she has early periodontitis but is otherwise healthy. Meet Beauty, a 2-year-old female dog with a gentle soul and a heart in need of healing. True to her name, Beauty has a soft, soulful presence - but she's also very fearful and still learning how to feel safe in the world around her. She often seeks comfort from staff, leaning on those she trusts for security and reassurance. Because of this, Beauty needs a patient, experienced adopter who can help her build confidence at her own pace. She does best with a slow, gentle approach and will thrive in a calm, structured environment where she can feel secure. Beauty will need both mental and physical exercise paired with consistent, positive training to help her grow. In her previous home, she was reported to be destructive, likely due to stress or lack of proper outlets for her energy and anxiety. With the right support, Beauty has so much potential to blossom into a loyal and loving companion.

Summary (1):: Beauty is a very active and playful female dog who is vocal, social, and affectionate most of the time. She enjoys spending time in the kitchen, living room, and her crate, and she plays often in the backyard. At night, she sleeps in a crate located in the dining room, where she can’t get into anything. Beauty is crate trained and does well for up to five hours; she prefers a regular crate without the bottom tray, as she does not like it. She walks on leash with mild to moderate pulling (rated 3), typically going out 1–2 times per day for about 30 minutes or until she’s ready to come inside—she’ll let you know by barking. Grooming is no issue for her; she goes to the groomer, loves water and bath time, and allows her family to brush her coat and trim her nails. Beauty knows basic cues like “sit,” “no,” and “stay.” She enjoys car rides but may struggle a bit when being placed in the car; once inside, she settles and enjoys the ride. Her favorite activities include playing with toys (especially bones), eating, and being around people. Her previous owner shared that when she listens and refrains from destructive behaviors, she is very sweet—especially around kids—and always adorable, though she can be quite vocal.

Summary (5):: 11/4 Beauty was in the front of the kennel when staff approached. She was easily leashed and walked into the yard. She alternated between sitting on the bench with the staff member and exploring the yard. She was leashed and brought back to her kennel 11/1 Beauty is sitting at the front of her kennel when staff approaches. She stands up and is easily leashed and pulls hard to the point of choking on the way out of the room. Beauty is brought out to the yard and she immediately runs over to the bench. She leans into staff with tense body accepting many pets, and rolling her head around to lick staff's hand and attempting to lick staff's face. Beauty is easily returned to the kennel. 10/28: Beauty is standing at the kennel front with a wagging tail as staff approaches. She is easily leashed and brought to the yard. A drag leash is secured to her and she runs around a bit, exploring her surroundings. She quickly comes back to staff and jumps on them. Beauty has a loose, wiggly body as she accepts pets. She wags her tail as she is spoken to in soft tones. She remains close to staff as she sniffs nearby toys in the yard. When it is time to return, Beauty sits and waits to be leashed, which staff praises her for. She goes directly into her kennel and eats the treats that were left for her. 10/23: Beauty is easily leashed and begins to pull toward barking dogs kennels. She is kept on a short leash and rushed out of the room. In the yard a drag leash is attached and she follows the handler to the bench, jumping up and seeking attention. Another staff member enters and she becomes aroused, jumping up excitedly, having to be slowed down. She launches into the handlers lap with her mouth open. The handlers arm goes into her mouth but no pressure is applied. She is brought on a walk and cowers when cars pass close by. When returning, she sees a female large mixed-breed dog and begins hard barking and lunging. The closest door is used to come inside, and she returns without further issue. 10.21 Beauty is standing at the front of her kennel as staff approaches. She crouches her body down low as staff leashes her. She runs past neighboring dogs and jumps up onto a staff member in the hallway. They give her pets before she continues on. In the yard, a drag leash is placed onto her and she runs around. Staff sits down on a bench, and she runs up to them, landing in their lap. They give her pets, and she attempts to lick their face. Staff then stands up and throws a toy. Beauty chases after it but does not pick it up. She follows staff around the yard. When it is time to go inside, she is easily leashed and returned to her kennel. 10.14 Beauty is at the front of her kennel and is easily roped. She pulls towards people passed in the halls with a soft and wiggly body. In the yard, Beauty is put on a drag leash and she spends the majority of her time outside standing on the staff members lap and leaning into pets with a wiggly body

Summary (6):: 10.13 Beauty was sitting at the front of her kennel when staff approached, she was easily leashed and taken for a walk. Once outside, Beauty had a tense body and and stiff tail while sniffing around. During the walk, she appeared anxious when cars passed, often changing direction abruptly and stopping suddenly. She frequently checked in with the handler for reassurance. When praised and given gentle reassurance, Beauty loosened up briefly but remained easily startled by noises, people, or passing vehicles. She pulled moderately on the leash but gave no issues returning to her kennel. 10/11 Beauty is at the front of her kennel when staff approach. She sits and is easily leashed and brought out to the yard. In the yard she jumps up and hugs staff's leg with her front paws while sniffing staff. After the drag leash is clipped she runs over to the bench where she jumps on bench and leans into staff and accepts pets, while quarter turning over while standing on three legs and wagging her tail energetically. She keeps trying to lick staff's face. At one point staff stands up and beauty sits on the bench still, but panting and accepting pets. Beauty is easily returned to her kennel. 10/10 Beauty is at the front of her kennel when staff approaches. When the slip lead is presented, Beauty sits down, ears pinned back and lip licking. She is hesitant to come forward through the loop but allows staff to leash her. She stops and starts when walking out of the building, seemingly nervous. When walking into the yard, her tail is tucked and she moves slowly. Staff sits and leaves Beauty to explore the yard on her own. She stops to sniff almost everywhere. When another member of staff opens the building door, Beauty is spooked and runs to sit in staff's lap and leans against them. She stays in staff's lap for quite a while, occasionally trying to climb higher on to staff's lap. Once she has calmed, staff gets up and Beauty follows them. Beauty jumps up on staff, her tail low and wagging quickly, and she hugs on to staff. When staff presents the lead to go back inside, Beauty retreats and backs away from any attempts to be leashed. Staff is able to lasso the leash on and bring her back inside easily.

Summary (7):: 10.08 (PM Walk) Beauty was sitting at the front of her kennel with a tense body and wagging tail. Beauty is easily leashed and brought outside on a walk. On the walk, Beauty had a tense body, tucked tail, and hackles raised. Beauty keeps her nose to the ground throughout the walk, sniffing various spots. Beauty remains tense for the remainder of the walk and when entering the adoption room, she bulks before returning to her kennel without issue. 10.8 Beauty moves to the front of her kennel when staff approaches. She is easily roped and taken to the yard. Beauty has a slightly tense body and tucked tail. When staff sits on the bench beauty immediately jumps up so her front legs are in the staff's lap and accepts pets. She maintains a slightly tense body and tucked tail. She is tolerant and allows staff to collar her. She stays on the staff's lap while in the yard. Beauty is taken for a brief walk, where she pulls a mild amount. When passing another staff member, she approaches, urinates, and wags her tucked tail while leaning into pets. 10.07 Staff approaches Beauty and she lowers her body and curls herself up in a submissive position. The kennel door is opened and she is easily leashed. Beauty quickly exits the kennel but abruptly stops. She looks at the barking neighboring dogs, runs, and then stops again. When they exit the room, Beauty jumps up onto the staff and makes a snorting sound. She turns to another staff member and jumps up onto them. When she begins her walk again, she moves quickly and stops. Her heckles are raised. Beauty is taken for a walk. While walking back into the room, Beauty again runs and stops while looking at the neighboring dogs. She balks when she reaches her kennel. Staff throws treats but she ignores. She then quickly runs into her kennel.

Summary:: hyperactive

Date of initial:: 10/7/2025

Summary:: friendly,allowed handling , very high engery

ENERGY LEVEL:: Beauty is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Beauty.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) Due to behaviors reported in the previous home we recommend and adult only home for Beauty at this time. Beauty reacts to other dogs by lunging and pulling hard towards them on leash. She would require slow, controlled introductions to another dog. A dog/dog interaction would be highly suggested. Recommend no dog parks: Due to on-leash reactivity seen in care, we recommend Beauty does not visit the dog park.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: HOUSE SOILING Beauty is noted to have accidents in the house and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see handout on House soiling. DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR Beauty is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Beauty will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. BASIC MANNERS/POOR IMPULSE CONTROL It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control. SOCIAL HYPERAROUSAL Beauty quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Beauty to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Beauty. Please see handout on Arousal. FEARFUL/POTENTIAL FOR DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION Beauty gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Beauty, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Beauty to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression. ANXIETY Beauty appears anxious at the care center. If Beauty displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. OLR/BARRIER FRUSTRATION Beauty is reported to be reactive on leash towards other animals and people. She is reported to hard bark and growl or attempt to greet. She should go to an owner familiar with working with this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity.
