Animal Profile

Soline

Hello, my name is Soline. My animal id is #252909. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/25/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Soline is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center due to requiring more space to stretch his legs and get his energy out. Due to his pent up energy he continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment as quickly as possible and into a stable home, where he can expel his excess energy and ideally settle down some. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. A volunteer writes: We don't know if Soline is a cat or a prairie dog, but we do know he doesn't want to be in his condo and tries everything he can to say as much. His protests are duly noted, but we've been trying to explain that it's merely a step in the process of finding a forever home. Soline was brought to us with notes detailing an independent kitty who likes to have as many options as possible when it comes to activities. This is why we see him sometimes trying to look out the window like a little prairie dog and sometimes why he politely tried to push past my arm and out to the Adoptions floor. While Soline's a fellow who could really use options and choices, he's also known to happily greet his loved ones at the door and lean in for pets.

Update: Admissions was able to follow up with Soline’s surrendering owner, who explained that Soline previously lived with three adults and a 17-year-old before a dog was introduced into the home in early 2026. The client stated that both pets had to be kept separate because they did not get along, with each animal spending designated hours confined to a bedroom and alternating free-roam time throughout the residence. When asked whether they believed this may have contributed to Soline’s behavioral changes, the client stated that it was likely the primary factor, noting that Soline appeared significantly more stressed after the dog was introduced into the home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/1/26 FB79 Inside of the den, Soline can be heard hissing as I open the kennel door; she pokes her head out and has very wide dilated eyes with her eyes wide and dilated, she sniffs the tool that i bring in slowly and backed into the den when it made contact with her head. However when I used the tool to reach in and pet her cheek she remained still for a moment then pulled back once again. 5/05/26 FB61 In cat den upon initial approach, body and face neutral with his ears forward. He steps out of his den partially when coaxed, then begins rubbing his cheeks on his den door before retreating back inside. I do not push petting today as I do not want to create a negative association with touch just yet. He sniffs the cat toy curiously and watches me use the feather toy with alert eyes and ears remaining forward. Will continue to monitor. 5/7/26 FB58 Sitting on top of his den and I can hear him stepping down as I am unlocking the door. He is right at the front of the cage as I open the door, ears forward and he appears very curious about the room as he tries to push his head through the gap in the door as I am trying to place the treat tray down. He allows pets on his head with the scratcher tool as he licks at the tray before he moves into his den. He then pokes his head out of the den and allows pets along his head and cheek with my hand and leans in, becoming a little too forward and I close the door. 5/8/26 FB79 Soline is inside of the den, he has his body neutral as he lays on his side with his tail wrapped and his ears forward; however, when i speak and toss in some treats for him his ears tilt and his eyes widen as he leaned in to sniff but also sniff the treats. He didnt start to eat the treats instead watches me closely for any other movement. He slow blinked back once so i didnt push any contact today. 5/8/26 I checked back in on Soline today because I placed a sign to give him a double yesterday... and it wasn't done. I open the portal door to give him more space and he is curious - coming over to the new side that has a kuranda bed as well. He walks over with a neutral face and body, tail raised and rubs along the front of the cage. He eats the treats offered and jumps onto the kuranda bed, which allows me to place the litter box in. He is still curious about getting out but when I offer my hand, he leans into pets on his head and cheeks, and moves to roll onto his side. He does appear to be more social, and I am curious to see if being able to see the room more overstimulates him or helps. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Energetic

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Sweet,Affectionate,Insistent,Playful,People oriented,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Fearful,Very high energy level,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Client stated he attacks unprovoked on a regular basis. Soline will hiss/lunge/swat/bite randomly at everyone in the household. Client stated there are no specific things that causes these incidents. Please see behavior resources for more information (nycacc.org). Also, please see helping a fearful cat, environmental enrichment and stress in cats. 6/13/26 Soline has spent some time in the shelter with all staff and the behavior team and has made major improvements in his behavior. He is a sweet cat that displays significant levels of energy and will require a structured play and enrichment regimen at home to ensure he is directing his energy in the correct way. In cage he is sweet and appreciates pets and attention, enjoys treats (easily redirected with them), but can become easily overstimulated - tending to tense and reach out to swat. This is likely due to him being such a large and high energy cat and living in smaller housing for some time. Often during interactions he is very insistent on getting out of the cage and this barrier frustration can also lead to him getting overstimulated if staff is trying to keep him from getting out. The feline team attempted to introduce him to one of the free roam rooms in hopes that he would be able to stretch his legs and get his excess energy out. He allowed a staff member to carry him 90% of the way before he began to squirm. While in the room, he walked around with a mid to low level tail with the tip swishing indicating focus or potential irritation (this room was all male cats) but he did well and respected all cats boundaries and he sniffed all of the surfaces. He was low growling at times but it appeared to be more at the environment than at the resident cats in the room. He only escalated when the greeter cat in the room Evan walked up to him and was too forward, head bunting him directly in the cheek. Soline hisses and demonstrated his boundary by swatting twice without nails. Soline may have the potential to do well with another cat if introduced properly.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home,No dogs

Recommendations comments:: Due to his bite/scratch history, the behavior seen in shelter, and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Soline would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. He is reported to actively avoid dogs. Introduced to other cats in Kitty Field, did well but escalated when head bunted directly in the cheek, swatted twice without nails and hissed. See potential challenges for more info. Soline may have the potential to do well with another cat if introduced properly.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Soline was in his cat den as the assessor approached, body and face initially hidden from view. Soline poked his head out of his cat den when spoken to, his face tense, his ears forward and his eyes staring straight ahead as he avoids making direct eye contact. Soline slowly stepped forward as the kennel door was being opened, his body low as he grumbled, huffed and occasionally flicked/shook his head. Soline settles onto the top of his den and he begins to make eye contact when pet along the head and body with the scratcher tool. He remains very tense and focused on the assessor while continuing to grumble at a low volume and huff/rapid breathe. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 5/9/26 & 5/13/26 Upon meeting with Soline recently, he has begun to display much more social and curious behaviors; rubbing along cage doors, soliciting attention, allowing and leaning into pets along his head and cheeks. He appears to be very curious about the room itself and is very determined to get out to explore. Behavior Staff were able to pick him up and hold him in order to return him back to the cage, although he did begin to grumble/growl and the interaction was ended immediately. 6/12/26 At the top of his kuranda bed, Soline chirps when the assessor entered and called his name; he entered through the portal door with his tail high and his back arched; Soline leaned into all pets and really enjoyed cheek and chin rubs. He allowed all pets and when he was pet all over his back and body he slightly pulled away. The assessor was able to to coax him forward with more cheek rubs and when pick up as conducted he remained still however when placed down he reached out to swat at the assessor with no claws. Soline could be heard grumbling quietly but did not escalate further. When met on 6/13/26, Soline was laying on his kuranda bed and resting and comes down to the front as the assessor is unlocking the cage with a neutral face and body. he accepts all pets along his head, cheeks, and back as he leans in with his tail raised. he is easily moved and directed with treats, although he does have the potential for overstimulation. He is allowed to jump out of the cage twice and allows the assessor to pick him up and place him back into the cage both times. The second time, he is place back in, he does turn and bat at the assessor's hand without nails. Later he allows the assessor to carry him from Sun Porch to the Free Roam Rooms. Due to prior owner history, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home with adults only who are committed to following the behavior modification plan outlined in the GAN as well as the suggestions listed in the recommended behavior flyers.
