Animal Profile

Cardi

Hello, my name is Cardi. My animal id is #101498. I am a female gray dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 11 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/7/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Cardi is at risk for behavior reasons. Cardi is deteriorating in care and causing harm to herself in her kennel. She will fixate on the transfer door and chew, her face and paws swelling. She is very sweet and social with staff and volunteers. However, she should be the only dog in the home. Medically, Cardi has periodontal disease, mammary gland tumors and a dermal mass.  Cardi was underweight when she arrived at the shelter.  While blood work was consistent with her body condition, chronic disease including liver or GI disease is possible.

She loves bath time, water play, and grooming, and happily enjoys car rides. Cardi is very active but listens well and knows her cues, making her a fun and engaging companion. She is highly food motivated and can be a bit pushy for treats, so she would benefit from continued reinforcement of polite treat manners. Cardi has shown reactivity toward small dogs, so she would do best as the only dog in the home. With her affectionate nature, energy, and love for people, Cardi is ready to thrive in a home that understands her needs and enjoys an active, loving companion.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Temporary] Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed as underweight and the staff veterinarians are issuing a TEMPORARY waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment through to the resolution of the issue. At the time of a full recovery you may choose to have your veterinarian perform the spay/neuter surgery, or make provisions to return the pet to ACC for sterilization.

Summary (1):: Cardi is a very active and playful female dog who spends most of her time in the living room. She loves bath time and water and truly enjoys grooming. On walks, she has a leash rating of 3, with mild to moderate pulling, and she goes on walks 3–4 times per day for about 10 minutes each time. Cardi is crate trained, does very well, and spends about 7 hours in the crate. She loves car rides and gets excited to go along. Cardi is very active but listens and knows her cues. The previous owner’s favorite things about her are that she is friendly and loves children, and her favorite activities include enjoying treats and playing with kids.

Summary (4):: 1/31 Cardi is at the front of her kennel barking. She is leashed with the help of a long-lasting treat. Once she reaches meet and greet, Cardi turns around, trying to go back into DA. As she pulls against the rope, she begins to pass out, the leash is loosened as she slowly slumps down and then recovers. Once she's back up, she turns around and heads outside with the handler. Outside, she walks around the building and relieves herself, then is brought to the yard. She explores the snow in the yard until her kennel is called. Cardi is easily returned to her kennel.

Summary (5):: 1.25 Cardi was jumping and barking at her door upon approach. She becomes more excited and jumpy when staff member goes to open the door. Treats were thrown down, and staff was able to loop her. Cardi was taken to the small yard. She relieved herself, then looked to go back inside. Another dog went into the big yard, and she was fixated on seeing the other dog. She cried/ whined and was jumping at the gate. Staff redirected her and distracted her with treats. It worked and she just explored the yard more and went back to the gate to go back inside. Going back inside, she pulled staff but went into her kennel without issue. 1/24 Cardi is at the front of her kennel when staff approaches. She is leashed and taken on a walk. She walks nicely on a leash and stops here and there to smell her surroundings. Staff offers her a few treats, which she takes somewhat roughly. She is easily taken back inside the building and returned to her kennel. 1/22/2026 Upon approach, Cardi is jumping up and down in her kennel. She is wagging her tail and wiggling her body. She was able to be leashed without issue and was brought to a room where her harness was clipped. Once clipped, she pulled hard on the way outside, and during the walk, she did not pull as hard. She was given a treat, and afterwards tended to look back at the handler for more treats. She would also try to walk in front of the handler. Walking back, she pulled hard to the building. She allowed herself to be leashed with no issue. Going to her kennel, she fixated a bit on the dogs in the other kennels, but with a pull, she went in.

Summary (6):: 1/20/26 Cardi has a soft body in the kennel and was leashed from the kennel. Staff member walked Cardi around the building with a loose leash. Staff then took Cardi to the yard and let the staff give them pets. Staff then took them back to the kennel without issue. 1/19 Cardi is at the front of her kennel, jumping up and down and vocalizing. When staff attempts to leash her, she continues jumping, eager to exit her kennel. She is eventually leashed and taken to the yard. In the yard, she initially stays close to staff and is given a few treats to chase after. At the sound of a dog in the next yard, she becomes fixated on getting a better look at them, going back and forth between the gate and trying to get on top of the container to get to the other dog. She does not stop trying to interact with the other dog for the rest of her time in the yard until the other dog is taken inside. Cardi is easily leashed and pulls on her way back in. She resists returning to her kennel and has to be forced into it before the door is closed and locked. 1/15/2026 Upon approach, Cardi is in her kennel, jumping up and down, waiting to be leashed. The staff member goes to place the rope around her neck; she is moving continuously, but is leashed pretty easily. She darts out of her kennel and down the hall. Once outside, she is pulling hard to get to the grass. After going to the bathroom, she darted again but began to pull less going up the block. On the walk, she was offered treats, which she took roughly. Coming back, she pulled hard once back inside the building. She went straight into her kennel but was heavily focused on the treats left for her. It took a moment to get her to turn around to properly take off the leash.

Summary (7):: 1/12 Cardi is easily leashed and brought to the yard. She begins to jump against on handlers lap exuberantly. Cardi is lured back to the floor and offered treats when able to keep feet on the floor. She begins to sit patiently waiting for treats. Cardi is lured into a heel position, and she follows the treats enthusiastically. We work on paws up. Cardi begins to take treats hard, so we stop. She is easily returned to the kennel. 1/10: Cardi is easily leashed and taken to the yard. She stays close to the staff and accepts all pets. She is very vigilant of what goes on outside the yard, stopping to watch anyone or anything passing by. She is easily leashed again and brought inside. 1/8: Cardi is easily leashed. When passing a small dog in a crate in the room, she becomes tense and forward-facing. Once outside, she immediately relieves herself. She is walked around the building and brought into the yard. She allows a martingale to be fitted and accepts pets, jumping up. She balks before going into the shoreline kennel. When the small dog is picked up for his walk, she begins screaming in her kennel, continuing for about 20 minutes until she settles. She was later moved to a larger kennel and heard vocalizing throughout the day. 01/07/26 Cardi is lying in her kennel when staff approach. She stands up with a soft body and tries licking the staff's hand through the door. She is easily leashed and brought out to the yard. Once outside the door, she relieves herself immediately. In the yard, she walks on a leash with staff. At one point, another staff member brings a dog Christmas outside, they meet through the gate, and Cardi begins barking at Christmas. Christmas and Cardi are then pulled away from each other. Cardi is easily returned to her kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to potential challenges we recommend a home with no children at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Cardi is reported to be reactive to small dogs, attempting to bite. We recommend she does not visit the dog park. We believe she would do best as the only dog in the home.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Cardi would have some occasional accidents in the home. Her owners reported if she couldn't hold it, she would go in her crate. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside, consistent feeding schedule and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it will likely make the problem worse. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Cardi finds treats of a high value. She is reported to hover and become tense. We recommend she be left alone when eating. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Cardi’s mouth. Should you have to remove something from her, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Cardi lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: Cardi was initially taking treats very rough from staff. We recommend offering treats on a flat palm, using larger or lower-value treats, and rewarding only calm, soft behavior. Practice the “gentle” cue by opening your hand only when Cardi relaxes. Keep sessions short and consistent to build polite treat-taking habits. Please see handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. Anxiety: Cardi is highly anxious in kennel, wailing when returned. If Cardi displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Cardi has shown reactivity towards other dogs through a barrier, reacting at the gate when doing a gate greet. Her owner reports she is reactive on leash towards other dogs, especially small dogs. Cardi should go to an owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
