During one instance Chulo jumped up high and his tooth made contact with the handler's nose, causing broken skin. Recently Chulo has been observed to be kennel reactive. During one instance Chulo turned towards the handlers leg with an open mouth and began pulling towards them. While in the yard Chulo will hard stare at dogs with a tense body. With select handlers Chulo is observed to present with a soft body and is receptive to treats. Medically, Chulo is currently healthy.

This dreamboat is so easy going -he's great on a leash, and is just so happy to be in the company of a friendly person who loves snuggling as much as he does. He will eagerly show of his tricks (not only "sit" and "paw" but "other paw!") in exchange for belly rubs. It's all a win/win with Chulo! We adore him and you know you will, too.

Summary:: Whale eyed, tail tucked, avoided muzzling, tense body for exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Chulo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and mouthiness, we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/ Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Mouthiness: Chulo was observed to take treats with pressure. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Chulo puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful: During his medical exam Chulo was observed to have a tense body and tucked tail. During his walk Chulo was also observed to have a tense body. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Chulo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: In the kennel room Chulo was observed to turned toward the handlers leg with an open mouth, the handler stiff-armed him away but Chulo again attempted to pull hard toward handler's leg. Chulo is also observed to become tense and hard stare at other dogs. Chulo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
