Midnite
Hello, my name is Midnite. My animal id is #223420. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 3/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Midnite is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat, is not thriving in the care center, and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust/decompress, and who have experience with helping a fearful/under socialized adult cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: Midnite is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he appears wary of human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. A volunteer writes: Midnite's a little like Goldilocks trying out the different places in his condo to see if they fit. Coming to us from a home with many other cats, Midnite has been open to tying a number of things, in addition to our beds, that he thinks could help him settle in. Crunching himself in the corner to stare wide eyed at Adoptions? Check. Hiding in a box? Check. Hiding in another box? Also, check. Though the results of his efforts have been a bit of a mixed bag, we sincerely appreciate them and have been using the time to learn about him as well. Midnite hasn't been too interested in toys, but he's open to pets and he really likes treats as long as they're left close to him. I too understand the benefits of convenience and the support a comfort zone brings, but we'd love to see more of Midnite. Though it might not be his style, he could use some time still to come around and is hoping to find that with you.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Midnite was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 04/04/25 FB61 In litterbox, face tucked into corner and body tense. He maintains eye contact with me as I push some treats and a toy near him but he remains otherwise completely frozen. He has a beautiful shiny, black coat and nice round cheeks. He tolerates all petting while shifting around slightly in his box. Needs more time. 4/6/25 FB79 Shy boy Midnite is in his litterbox with a low body and tightly wrapped tail; he has wide dilated eyes and forward ears when i open the cubby and looks away turning his head to the side when i speak to him. He doesn't take any treats but does tolerate pets on his head while remaining very still and tense with hunched in shoulders. 4/9/25 FB58 I'm pleased to see he is not in his litter box and is still using the hide box I gave him a few days ago. He is sitting in the box with a tense face and body and hyper salivating with ears mostly forward, eyes wide. Unsure if this is due to high FAS or if he is getting sick but I don't push interactions today and leave some treats. Added to Gaba list. 4/11/25 FB61 Low energy today - has been diagnosed with a URI. He is in his hidey spot, sniffling and resting. He does not show interest in the treats or the catnip toy offered. He tolerates petting with the scratcher tool while flinching and squinting his eyes so I don’t push it further - he is feeling sick and I don’t want to stress him out. Needs more time. 4/13/25 Vol. Midnite was in his box/bed on the shelf, all hunched up towards the back. I offered him treats and toys but he showed no interest in them. I petted him with a pipe cleaner. He just looked at me, so I petted him on the head with my hand. He tolerated it, but turned his face away as if to avoid it. He is breathing as if he is congested and his kennel card shows that he is under the weather, so that may affect his behavior. 4/18/25 FB61 Lying in hidey box, body and face tense with expression neutral and ears slightly tilted. He leans forward to sniff the treats and toy offered and he eats the treats closest to him. Since he appears a bit more curious than during previous sessions I attempt petting but he flinches hard and backs away. I slow-blink and speak to him softly before ending the session 4/24/25 FB79 Today, Midnite displayed the same behaviors described in the previous enrichment note. 4/28/25 FB61 In hidey box, body hunched, feet and tail tucked and expression neutral. He tolerates petting from within his box while flattening his ears, squinting his eyes close and flinching as he begins to lean away. He does not show interest in the treats for the amount of time I’m in the room and although he sniffs his enrichment he does not play with it. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Midnite came from a home with about 30+ other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans. "Spirit cats" in a shelter context refer to cats who are very shy with people, preferring to live in a quiet environment and interacting with other cats rather than humans. They are often a good choice for patient, kind individuals who can create a safe and comfortable space for them to thrive. We cannot be certain whether or not Midnite will warm up to socialization in shelter or in a home environment and clients should be counseled on the potential of Midnite being a Spirit Cat.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Midnite would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 4/1/25 On approach, Midnite is laying with a tense face and body, low and flat in his litter box with eyes wide and dilated. He is tolerant of pets along his head and cheeks but doesn't lean in and remains tense and frozen in the box. Pick up is not attempted. 5/1/25 On approach, Midnite is in his hide box and blocked from view. When turned towards the front, he is curled up with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, tail wrapped tight. He is tolerant of touch/pets on his head and cheeks with the assessor's hand but remains tense and ears are tilted to the side. Pick up is not attempted. Midnite is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he appears wary of human contact.
