Animal Profile

Seven

Hello, my name is Seven . My animal id is #221531. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Seven is on the at-risk list due to behavior and inconsistent appetite due to FAS. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

A volunteer writes: Seven has been described as a total love bug when he wants to be. I'm a big fan of the caveat and think it may also explain why we haven't seen so much of his love bug ways at the Care Center. At under a year old, Seven's a baby who certainly doesn't love the Care Center and wants to make sure we're all on the same page about that. With paws tightly tucked, Seven has inspected our treats and has even allowed some pets, but he's finding shelter quite wearing to say the least. Though we've been trying to add some brightness wherever we can, Seven came to us from a home with many other cats and may not have had a lot of experience with meeting new people. We know there's a family out there for this special little guy.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT on 3/4/25 FB58 On approach, Seven is in his den and completely hidden from view - he cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the the den cover is lifted, he is sitting with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated and frozen. He is initially tolerant of pets with the scratcher tool along his head, cheeks, and body as well as with the assessor's hand along his cheek. However, as the assessor slowly adjusts the linen in his den, he begins to get irritated and he low growls and hisses, lunging at the den front and swatting. Pick up is not attempted. 3/10/25 FB79 Seven is inside of the den when i approach and lift the den cover; he sits with a hunched back and wide dilated eyes. I use treats in attempt to coax him out due to the state of his den but he has no interest and remains frozen as he looks past me towards the back of the room. Seven leans in to sniff the pointer tool and flinches when i try and pet his head - he tolerates pets but starts to back away and duck the tool the more i pet on his cheeks. I left some treats on the outside of the den for him. 3/17/25 FB79 Seven is laying in the litter with a neutral face/body and tucked paws. Uninterested in the treats that I put near the litter box as he leans into sniff, and flinches with a harsh hiss when I slowly introduced the tool. Seven sits up with now wide eyes and his tail wrapped around his legs as he watches me - when i speak to him softly he slow blinks and slowly returns to tucking his paws under his body and lip licks a few times. 3/19/25 FB58 Sitting in his box with a tense face and body, ears tilted and eyes wide. When I use the scratcher tool to place tray with squeeze up and chicken down in front of him, he stands to spit and lunge at the tray. He then sniffs at it but is not comfortable eating in front of me. 3/21/25 FB61 Sitting upright in back of kennel, ears tilted, eyes squinting and tail wrapped around feet. I do not push hands-on interaction and he does not eat the treats offered while I'm in the room. I speak to him softly and slow-blink before walking away. 3/26/25 FB61 Sitting upright on perch upon approach, body tense, ears flat and tail wrapped around feet. He maintains eye contact as I open the kennel door, then he lowers his body and I push a tray of squeeze-ups towards him. He begins to eat some of the treats closest to him, however he becomes too focused on me to continue. I slow-blink and close the kennel door and he proceeds to finish his treatie surprise. 3/28/25 FB61 Lying flattened on perch, ears tilted, pupils dilated and face tense. He focuses on me, ears flattening further as I slowly leave him some temptations. He leans forward to sniff the treats but he remains fixated on me until I close the kennel door. I speak to him softly and slow-blink as I'm doing so and when I check on him later I see the treats have been eaten.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Due to coming from a home with 40 other cats, Seven may have been somewhat socialized to the people in the home but not appropriately socialized to other humans/strangers. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people, we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Seven would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 3/8/25 Upon meeting with Seven again, he has begun to deteriorate and no longer allows interactions. On approach, he is in his den and completely hidden from view - cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly/ When the cage cover is removed, he is sitting at the back of the cage with a tense face and body, hunched with eyes wide and dilated. As the assessor reaches their hand forward slowly, he lunges and swats at the front of the den. The assessor then slowly introduces the scratcher tool into the den and he immediately leans forward to bite the tool, and the interaction is ended. 3/27/25 Seven is a shy, timid, and independent cat. He has made some improvements since the previous evaluation; however, he still displays fearful behaviors during interactions. He was lying down in loaf position on top of the shelf with his head and ears forward and front paws tucked under his body, focused on the assessor with a neutral body and eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, he harshly hisses, steps back, and sits up with his tail wrapped around his body. He ignores treats offered, briefly sniffs the scratcher tool, and then tenses up when receiving cheek rubs. He steps further back, sniffs the tool again, and focuses on the tool when stroking his body. He lip licks and focuses on the assessor when receiving cheek rubs again. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Seven is a young cat who may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and appears wary of human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization. tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He/she may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his/her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
