Crystal
Hello, my name is Crystal. My animal id is #251786. I am a female calico cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/8/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCrystal is at risk due to ongoing behavior concerns. She is currently quick to lunge, swat hiss, and yowl at staff members. These stress related behaviors have made it difficult for staff during cleaning hours and during interactions. She would benefit from placement in a low-traffic, quiet environment with adopters that are willing to slowly work with her. She has two previous bite incidents in her previous home. Medically, she has stage 3 periodontal disease that will need treatment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5.14 Crystal is sitting near the portal and immediately lunges out, swatting and hissing, as the handler attempts to close the portal door. She continues to swat with airplane ears and growls as she does so. Once the portal door is closed, she continues to swat and growl. As the portal is re-opened, she lunges forward and swats as the handler backs up. Later on, as the handler is sweeping and mopping the room, Crystal begins to yowl loudly and swats through the kennel bars. She looks up at the handler, hissing with airplane ears. 5/10: Crystal was observed sitting on top of her den and growling at staff as they walked past her kennel. To avoid further overstressing Crystal and the surrounding cats, staff elected to attend to her kennel last. Once staff lifted the kennel cover, she began growling, hissing, and showing full teeth. Crystal was tensed up on her den until staff used a hook to try to grab a dirty bowl. She attacked the hook, swatting, yowling at it and then biting it. Staff left the side she was on alone and cleaned her litterbox side. She continued to yowl and growl at the staff. After staff finished cleaning the portal was opened and she attacked the hook immediately through the portal when staff was trying to remove it. Staff then tried to slowly push the litterbox with the hook to adjust it and she came through the portal and attacked the hook again. Staff then ended the interaction. 5/8 Crystal is in the litter box side of her kennel. She begins hissing and growling at staff member as they walk back and forth performing cleaning tasks. Staff attempts to give her treats through the door, but she intensifies the growling and tries to swat. Staff offers her a tray of squeeze up but she retreats through the portal. Staff leaves the squeeze up and treats in her kennel, and places a cover over the litterbox side. She continues to growl as staff cleans other kennels.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Overstimulation: Crystal appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Crystal becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. Bite/Scratch History: Crystal has two previous bites to a person. When she was startled by the owner moving too suddenly to feed her, she bit and did not break skin. The second bite occurred when the owner was vacuuming. She hissed and later on bit the owner after she was rubbing against their leg. This bite did not break skin.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Crystal is sitting on top of her den with airplane ears and small, rounded eyes. She sits with her body hunched over. She hisses and swats as the handler slowly opens the kennel door. Crystal then begins to yowl. The handler gives her slow blinks and she stares back, growling. A scratcher tool with some squeeze up is slowly extended out to her. She begins to yowl again, then hisses and lunges forward. Crystal swats at the scratcher tool multiple times. As the handler ends the interaction, Crystal sits in the back corner, on top of the den, and continues to yowl. Crystal is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, bite and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She has a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
