Animal Profile

Chickie

Hello, my name is Chickie. My animal id is #253554. I am a female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/2/2026.

Chickie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. When Chickie first arrived, she was fearful, growling, refusing to be leashed, retreating from staff, and allowing only limited handling. Over time, Chickie warmed up to staff; however, she continues to display tension during handling and exhibited resource-guarding behavior during her assessment. When outside, Chickie appears more relaxed, accepts some petting, and readily takes treats. Medically, Chickie is noted to have fracture teeth but it otherwise healty.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Once she enters the kennel room, dogs start barking at her and she begins to pull and rushes into her kennel. 6/12/26: Chickie is at the front of her kennel with a soft body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, the handler pets Chickie, which she allows with a soft body. The handler then brings her to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). After the interaction, the handler walks Chickie around the yard’s perimeter, which she does so with moderate leash tension. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Chickie to her kennel. 6/06/26: Chickie is at the front of her kennel with loose body when handler approaches. She does not lift her head for treats or squeakers. Handler reaches in and drapes the leash over her head. She will not come forward. Handler opens the door wide, kneels down and speaks to her but she remains in place. Handler attempts to use the hook to retrieve the leash but Chickie is tense and watchful of it. Leash is left to fall of naturally. Later when handler approaches, Chickie is standing at the front drinking her water. Handler unlocks the kennel and Chickie retreats and sits on her blankets. HAndler is able lean in and place the leash on Chickie but she does not come forward. As handler closes the kennel door, it squeaks and she shifts her weight forward as if to dart out. She climbs up oto the bench and sits next to handler, facing away. Handler is able to pet her back. She is easily returned to kennel. She begins to inch forwards, but then the dog in the kennel next to her (Indico) barks loudly at her and she retreats back to the back of the kennel and begins trembling. She continues to tremble for a few minutes so the leash is removed. The handler comes back ten minutes later to try again and leashes Chickie, but now she does not come forwards at all. The walk is abandoned. 5/4/26: (AM) Chickie is sitting on her blankets in her kennel, neutral body. Her eyes are wide and her ears are back. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Chickie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Chickie has been observed to become tense and hover over a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Chickie's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: Chickie has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to growl when handlers attempt to interact, show whale eye, and have a low body. It is important to move slowly with Chickie, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
