Cream
Hello, my name is Cream. My animal id is #250508. I am a male ginger cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/25/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - debilitating injuries.
Cream is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Cream tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/1/26 Vol. Cream was inside the den. On lifting the den cover, he was found sitting upright, his side pressed against the back of the den, tail tightly wrapped around him, eyes wide, pupils dilated, ears up, whiskers down. Uninterested in the feather toy presented to the portal (when hung from ceiling). He hissed at the small ball deposited slowly through the portal, scrunching further back. After a brief reset, a few crunchy treats were offered, meeting with another hiss and low growl. Needs more time. 4/3/26 Vol. Cream was resting inside den, away from opening. He did not show interest when offered treats on scratcher tool, remaining silent and out of sight. He did not show interest in a feather toy. When den cover was briefly lifted, he pressed himself into back corner of den, with a tense body and wide dilated eyes. 4/4/26 Vol. Hiding in den, out of sight. Did not move or make audible noise when a cup of treats and squeeze-up was dropped into den. Checked back after 5 minutes, had not eaten. When den cover was raised, hissed once and sat at the back.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Cream should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water, either because prior owner notes [Cream is reported to be shy, timid, who initially hides and would hiss and nip at times with strangers] and because behaviors seen at the Care Center [shy, avoidant of handling, hides in den, very timid] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: Cream has been very shy and fearful during his stay at the care center and may be intimidated by very young children. No children under age 5, respectful older children only. Important to note owner states he is friendly and gentle with children, counselor discretion.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cream is sitting upright in his den, pupils dilated, body tense, and pressing himself close to the back corner. Treats are offered but he does not respond to them. He is tolerant of all petting with the scratcher tool but remains tense when he is pet, leaning away and body rippling as his ears go back. He does not escalate further but pickup is not attempted due to observed behavior. Cream is unable to be coaxed out of the den and remains frozen at the back throughout the interaction. Interaction is ended to reduce stress. Cream tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
