Animal Profile

Tiger

Hello, my name is Tiger. My animal id is #205526. I am a male orange tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 11 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/31/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Tiger is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to stranger. Medically, Tiger is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Stretching into a sunspot, Tiger made his way out of his cubby to say hello, but when I opened the condo door, he skipped the traditional greeting and immediately began airing his grievances. He's not a fan of the Care Center and is ready for his forever family to come and get him, like yesterday. Tiger is adorably curious and presents himself at the front to inspect everyone and everything. He's also gorgeous, so he always has people making their way over. However, Tiger doesn't seem to be sure what to do with new friends when they visit, hence the grievances. It's clear that Tiger is trying in his own way, but doesn't always know what to do next. His previous family explained that Tiger is totally fine with being held and generally likes to do things in his own time. He has been extraordinarily well loved and will be again, he could just use a helping hand as he figures things out and makes his way.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/6/24 FB58 At the front of the cage huffing and sniff my hand when it is brought near the cage door. He will snuffle and grumble before stress vocalizing and reaching his paw out to swat. He then backs away. I put treats down and click when he approaches calmly and eats. 8/8/24 FB32 Sitting up at front of kennel with tense body and alert eyes. Upon approach, he flattens his ears, stress meows, and raises his paw in the air when reaching close. When attempting to open the door, he swats at the door. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 8/13/24 FB1261 Lying in back of kennel, ears forward and eyes alert. He makes eye contact when spoken to and begins chattering before he begins to roll back and forth, playfully with a relaxed body and belly in the air. He sits upright to eat the treats offered and he tolerates all petting with the scratcher tool while remaining neutral and wriggling the skin along his lower back. He is very active and playful and loves treats and toys. He may be sensitive to being touched and pet - will continue to monitor. Did not escalate during today's session. 9/9/24 FB79 In his kennel, vocalizing with a neutral face/body Tiger has a loose tail with forward ears and almond eyes. He quickly leans in to start enjoying the treats that are placed down for him; Tiger allows all pets on his head/cheekies as well as up his back and tail with no reaction. I leave some toys for him as he is still busy enjoying his snack.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Talkative

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Playful,Curious,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Noted to play rough and nips when pet for too long (Not breaking skin). Tiger has had a previous bite incident in shelter on 8/16/24. An adoptions counselor entered sunporch room with 2 adopters and the adopters stood to the side near the kennel. Tiger was loose in kennel, showing stomach. When Star opened the kennel door, Tiger was at the front and leaned in with his head. She reached out to pet the top of his head. As soon as she touched him, he bit her hand through the glove. After he bit, he released and moved away as did Star. Tiger did not seem tense after. Tiger has relatively neutral notes from the home, however due to not showing warning signs during his bite and displaying conflicting in cage behavior (rolling, showing belly with a soft face and body, rubbing on the cage door) in the adoptions room previously, there may be a chance of a repeat bite incident as his behavior/body language may be hard to read for adopters. Out of an abundance of caution, the behavior team has decided to make him New Hope Only.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Tiger would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. It was noted by other staff on intake that he hissed, swatted and growled when other cats were placed in neighboring kennels.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Tiger is in his den with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, and he hisses he sees the assessor. He sniffs the tool when offered and remains tense and whines but is tolerant of touch with the tool while inside the den. He is offered dry treats and he sniffs at the air, poking his head out to look around and accepts more pets on his head with the tool and sniffs at the treats. Pick up is not attempted to prevent further FAS. On approach, Tiger is sitting at the back corner of his cage, loafed with a tense face and body, ears slightly tilted, eyes wide and dilated. The assessor uses the Asses-A-Hand to slowly reach out and he tenses. He begins to vocalize when touched and pet and is tolerant for a moment before escalating to swatting the hand with both front paws and pinning it down before biting it. He hissing and growls afterward as he backs away and holds a paw raised. Pick up is not attempted. Tiger is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, bite, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
