Jolly Dottie is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She has warmed up despite her history of using treats to build a positive association. Due to her history of incidents, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a stressful cat to adjust to strangers.

I'm being clicker trained to do "high 5". I am really treat motivated. You can use treats to teach me new things! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! My purr motor is always running! I am playful and cute! Jolly Dottie interacts with the assessor, appreciates & solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Due to prior owner history (see separate notes) and a bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home. Adopters should be well counseled on body language. A volunteer writes: The first time I met Jolly Dottie, she was sitting up in her condo and holding her crinkly ball in her mouth. Looking around the Care Center with her pastel green eyes while seemingly trying to knock the ball out with her own little paws, she was content to entertain herself (and me). Now, affectionate little Jolly Dottie is devoted to her cuddles. Jolly Dottie has a whole collection of toys and, of course, she loves to play. However, Jolly Dottie approaches each of her toys like she's doing them a favor, but since they insist, she can play with them for five minutes. It's hilarious watching her lazily bat at her pipe cleaner feather or put her paw on her stuffed bear before moving on to the next activity. If you are hoping to add a very snuggly and loving little cat to your family, please look no further

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

When interacting with Jolly, she was purring and giving headbutts while in her carrier. Once removed from the carrier (I placed the carrier with the flap opened into the kennel) she immediately got out, look at me when a hard stare and airplane ears and kept hissing and growling. She would then go back to leaning in and headbutting when the kennel door was closed. There was another cat above her making a lot of noise and she would then start to hiss in the direction of that cat. She did not swat at me at all.

Spay/Neuter status: Yes

Date of Intake: 11/3/2023

KNOWN HISTORY:: Jolly Dottie was brought in without information on her behavior history in a home environment except that upon intake, Jolly Dottie back legs were covered in feces from her relieving herself due to being fearful. When the box was open, she was alert, curious and eager to come out. She jumped right out and started eating the food that was given to her. She enjoyed being petted and allowed the counselor to scan her for MC and apply the paper collar. She allowed all handling.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/15/23 Social by the front, seeking attention. When spoken softly to she chirps leaning against the hand when petted. Placed an interactive cat toy for her to interact with but shows no interest and she observed from afar. 11/17/23 Social by the front seeking attention. Alert with soft eyes. She head bunts and body leans against the assess-a-hand. After a few strokes she gently nips it but quickly releases and continues to be affectionate. 11/18/23 Jolly Dottie was at the front, chatty and alert and ate treats and allowed all petting and arched her back and raised her tail with lower back petting. She is active and curious with nice energy. 11/21/23 Upon approach she is at the front of the kennel and solicits attention, rolling around on her back and gently extending a paw through the kennel bars. Head bunts when offered hand and allows all petting. 4.7.24 At front of kennel meowing for attention with confident body language. Falls into neck pets, and allows staff to pet her for over a minute without incident. Sweet girl! 4/8/23 Sitting up at the front of the kennel with a soft body and eyes. Leans head forward to sniff and eagerly accepts treats offered. Begin clicker training to target her nose to my finger. She does very well and occasionally will lick my finger after targeting. During the session, she also reached her paw through the door to give me a high five, so I click-rewarded for that behavior as well. After about 10 repetitions of targeting and high-fives, she was no longer interested in the treats. Sweet and smart cat. 4/12/24 Sitting upright by the front. Soft eyes with ears relaxed and forward. She head bunts and body leans against the hand when petted. Purrs throughout the interaction while she scans the room. Ate offered treats. 4/15/24 On top of the karunda bed, allows and enjoys all petting, leaning in for cheek rubs, meows gently and comes down for more treats. Doing well! 4/20/24 Sweet and curious at the front, standing tall, leans out of kennel to investigate with a high tail and enjoys petting and treats. 4/22/24 Sweet and curious at the front, stands up when approached with a high tail and enjoys all petting. 4.30.24 Lounging at front of kennel meowing softly with soft eyes. Right as she reached through bars for staff's finger (that had Squeeze-up on it) staff said "high-5", she touched with her paw, staff clicked and praised with "yes". Staff repeated this for the whole Squeeze-up. 2-Front of kennel upon approach, rubbing against bars with confident body language. Going crazy over staff waving "da bird" wand toy outside of her kennel...reaching out of bars and vigorously running and jumping to try and catch it. VERY high energy...needs mental and physical stimulation or she will act out.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Curious,Calm,Playful,Sweet,Affectionate,People oriented

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,Overstimulation,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Two previous bite/scratch incidents (see reports for more details): The first incident on 9/17/23 was when she was being protective of her kittens; she became overstimulated and repeatedly swatted and stress meowed while hunched over her kittens The second incident on 11/12/23 appeared to be unprovoked, or at least misunderstood, and involved her lunging at the person involved. This incident occurred on the third day of the new trial adopter's home while she was still needed time to adjust. In addition, they were other people in the room, so there is the possibility that she was overwhelmed by the traffic in the room; however, during the most recent behavior assessment, she remained calm and the extent of her overstimulation was just the slight swishing of her tail even though there was a large group of clients in the room. She was most likely tolerant of the traffic in the adoption room because she had enough time to adjust in her kennel and feel comfortable in contrast to the new trial adopter's home. The third incident on 4/2&5/24 The former owner patted the bed to signal Jolly to go in the bed. Jolly Dottie ended getting him. Jolly then started to stalk the owner a few days after also leading up to the incident.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to bite history. No exceptions.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Jolly Dottie is a calm, sweet, and affectionate cat. She was at the front, rubbing against the door, and sniffs treats offered. She welcomes petting on the head and leans in hard for cheek rubs. When stroking her body, she slightly swishes her tail; however, it is possible that that sign of minor overstimulation was in response to the large number of clients and traffic in the adoption room. During pick up, she remains calm and slightly tenses up and allows brief petting all over when held for 5 seconds. After placing her back down, she continues to appreciate more petting and cheek rubs and climbs on the door and shelf to solicit more attention. Jolly Dottie interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Due to prior owner history and a bite/scratch history (see potential challenging comments above), we feel that this cat will do best in a home with some cat experience preferred who demonstrates a basic understanding of typical cat behavior. The client should be well counseled in overstimulation and feline body language, keeping her occupied to remove any boredom will also be an outlet to prevent any possible incidents in the near future. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
