Odette is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Odette is a elderly dog who was brought in as a stray. We have assessed Odette to have a severe respiratory infection with possible pneumonia and will need ongoing care that we can not provide. She has allowed most handling, but can get worked up quickly leading to more breathing difficulties.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 10-14y Microchip noted on Intake? scanned negative History: Reported stray Subjective: BAR Observed Behavior - Tense, but allows handling for exam and most tasks. Thrashes when attempting to examine face. Summary:: Odette was surrendered as a stray, so their past behavior in a home setting is unknown. In the Care Centers, Odette was tense, but allowed handling for exam and most tasks. During intake it was noted that Odette snapped when a handler picked her up. However, when a different handler used a towel to pick her up she allowed it. Odette's determination is reflected in the limited behavioral information we've gathered and observed. However, it’s unclear whether their behavior will remain consistent or if new behaviors may emerge once they are fully medically cleared. Positive reinforcement should be used when working with Odette.

Summary (7):: 9/9/26: Odette is in her bed lying down quietly, handler places their leash over her. She sits up and handler opens the kennel door to allow her to exit. Odette remains in her bed and any leash tension that is applied she tries to thrash. Handler towels her and carries her out of the kennel. She is carried out towards the driveway and placed on the ground. Odette walks in a circle before relieving herself. She then begins to sit down and shuffle on the ground, she stands up and sits down repeatedly. Odette is toweled again and taken to the assessment office. She is placed on the ground in the office and sits there. She begins coughing repeatedly and lays down. The assessment is not attempted due to her condition. Odette is then picked back up with a towel and placed in her kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Odette so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: During intake Odette snapped when picked up. However, she has allowed pickup when the handler uses a towel. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Odette to be more comfortable with this.
