Banana Cream Pie
Hello, my name is Banana Cream Pie . My animal id is #246374. I am a desexed female blonde dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 5 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/22/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Banana Cream Pie is at risk due to behavior concerns. Banana has show increasing shelter stress and dog reactivity while in care. In kennel, she has been observed to jump up and down and heavily pant. She fixates on dogs on the street as well as in the shelter, hard staring, pulling hard, and barking towards other dogs. She is sometimes able to be redirected with squeakers while outside at a distance from other dogs, but is not able to be redirected with treats or a squeaker in close proximity. Banana's previous owner states that she will growl and hard bark when seeing dogs and moving objects while on leash. Banana has also shown signs of fearfulness while in care. Banana's previous owner notes that she will become tense and hover over food and random objects, and has frequent accidents in the home. She was described to be very playful and hyperactive in the home. Medically, Banana Cream Pie is slightly underweight but otherwise apparently healthy.

Banana Cream Pie is as sweet as her name suggests! She was originally found tied up outside a building as a stray and is now searching for a patient, loving family to help her leave her past behind. This playful girl has been spending time in foster care, where she's shown just how loyal and fun she can be once she settles in. My Ideal Home Banana Cream Pie would thrive with an experienced adopter who can provide structure, consistency, and plenty of exercise. She loves staying active and will enjoy enrichment like puzzle toys, long-lasting chews, sniffy walks, and training sessions that keep her busy. A calm home where she can settle in at her own pace will help her feel her best. Good with Other Pets? Banana Cream Pie prefers to have her favorite food and treasures all to herself. She can also be reactive toward dogs while on leash, so slow introductions and thoughtful management around other pets are recommended. Good with Kids? Due to her resource guarding, leash reactivity, and need for a calm environment, ACC recommends an adult only home. Things to Know Banana Cream Pie is an energetic girl who's still working on a few life skills. She'll benefit from continued positive reinforcement training for leash manners, polite greetings, and house training, as she's had occasional accidents indoors. She can be cautious in new environments and appreciates slow introductions, giving her the choice to approach people and new experiences at her own pace. With patience, consistency, and lots of encouragement, she's sure to blossom into an incredible companion. What My Foster Says "My foster writes: BCP is a sweetheart. She is very energetic and loves to play with her fluffy toys. She stays calm in her crate, stays by your side during walks, and with a bit of structure and training could become your bestie! Movie nights, binge watching, hikes, or runs... she'll be that loyal, no-drama companion." Fun Fact Whether it's chasing after fluffy toys, heading out on an adventure, or curling up for a movie marathon, Banana Cream Pie is happiest simply spending time with her favorite person.

Summary:: Tense body, tucked tail, allowed all handling
Date of initial:: 5/24/2026
Summary:: Tense body for exam; resists restraint
ENERGY LEVEL:: Banana Cream Pie is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Banana Cream Pie.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding and on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Banana's previous owner states that she will have daily accidents. Banana is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Banana's previous owner states that she will become tense and hover over food and random objects in her possession. During her assessment she was observed to become tense with a toy in her possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Banana's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Banana's previous owner states that she will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Staff have reported that Banana Cream Pie has displayed fearful behavior and high levels of FAS, showing a tense body, tucked tail and avoiding handlers at times. It is important to always go slow and give Banana Cream Pie the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Banana Cream Pie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Banana's previous owner states that she will growl and hard bark when seeing dogs and moving objects while on leash. Banana will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Banana's previous owner states that she will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
