The previous owner notes he is naturally aggressive with their other cat who has passed away. Their fights would get really bad and they would have to spray them or physically remove them from each other. (It is important to note that Leonidas is not neutered which may be a contributing factor to this behavior.) He loves treats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/18/26 FB09 Leonidas was brought from Cat Holding to Adoptions upstairs and once his den was opened to be placed in his kennel, he jumped over the den and fled towards the door. When cornered by the door, he fled to the other corner of the room and hid under the kennels. After maneuvering the kennels to get him to move, he began scaling the walls by the window. Feline Behavior was able to towel him while he was clung to the wall and place him into his kennel. His eyes were dilated throughout but he did not escalate to any aggression and despite squirming while toweled, he did not attempt to bite or scratch. After placed in his kennel and given time to decompress, Feline Behavior revisited him. He was curled in his cubby with dilated eyes but allowed the handler to pet along his head extensively. 7/19/26 Vol. Resting in bottom cubby with head sunk low and dilated eyes. Sniffed a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up, but did not investigate further. Listened to sweet talk, moving his ears, but continued looking down. Allowed a few head scratches and cheek rubs, but slowly tried to back away. 7/22/26 FB09 Leonidas was lying on the ledge in his kennel and looked at the handler with dilated eyes, lowered ears and his paws tucked under his chest. He sniffed the treats offered to him but showed no further interest. He accepted a few head pets before his body tensed up and he slowly moved back, instead returning slow blinks with the handler from a distance. 7/24/26 Vol. On shelf, paws tucked, eyes normal. Looked at treat bowl, ignored. Approached with scratcher tool - he allowed head scratches, eyes squeezing shut and slowly turning head to face corner but still allowing scratches. He then turned back and went into a crouch (and drooled a bit) to then walk slowly to treat bowl and start to eat. Did not seem to appreciate scratches while eating - when he stopped and pulled back - gave a few more scratches and ended interaction. 7/27/26 Vol. Leonidas is in loaf on the top ledge of the condo. He doesn’t make eye contact and remains still as the pointer with the treat is extended. Ignores the treat but allows extensive petting with the pointer. He then rose up, shifted his body 180 degrees and settled in loaf, facing out, closing his eyes. Did not react to a finger extended towards his forehead and allowed pets on his forehead and the top of his head keeping his eyes closed. He may be subdued because he’s under the weather.  8/01/26 FB09 Leonidas was curled up in his den with dilated eyes and his tail wrapped around his body. He showed no interest in the treats offered to him but returned a slow blink at the handler. He then accepted extensive petting along his head. GAN

Potential challenges comments:: See relevant behavior flyers. Although this behavior has not been observed in the shelter environment, the prior owner reports that Leonidas will escalate when pet for too long. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior, we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Leonidas becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.

Recommendations comments:: Due to behavior reported in the previous home, an adult only home is recommended. Due to previous owner history (reported to have fought with the other cats in the home), he would also be best suited in a home without other cats

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 7/17/26 Leonidas was lying in a loaf position on top of his den with lowered ears and his paws tucked under his body. He watched the handler carefully with dilated eyes as they approached him with treats. He sniffed the treats but showed no further interest in them. He allowed the handler to pet him along his head as his eyes closed and his ears flattened further. When transitioning to pets along his back, his body tensed up. He accepted a few more pets before eventually retreating into his den to avoid further contact. 8/16/26 Leonidas is laying in a loaf position on his top shelf, front paws tucked under his chest as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he squints as he observes the assessor with a tense body. He is tolerant of petting on the head and cheeks but flinches, leans away, and does not engage with the attention, tensing further when he is pet down his back. Pickup is not attempted due to observed behavior. Leonidas tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
