At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. King Joe

King Joe is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. King Joe has been deteriorating due to his length of stay despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. King Joe is observed throughout the day to jump off his kennel walls repeatedly, bounce and rebound side to side, hard barking with a flushed face when approached in kennel. King Joe is social and affectionate with staff, but is struggling within the care center. Medically, King Joe is apparently healthy.

Figgy

Figgy is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Figgy has been observed to be intensely leash biting during his stay in the care center. This behavior was manageable with the use of medication, but now has escalated to hard mouthing handlers and is unable to be redirected using treats. Figgy has also been observed to fixate and bark at people and dogs while on leash. Recently, Figgy was observed to chew on his kennel wall. While out with handlers Figgy is social and will present with a loose wiggly body and is engaged during training sessions. Medically, Figgy is underweight.

Pepe

Pepe is on the at-risk list due to behavior. His previous owner describes him as a very active and playful cat who likes to spend most of his time in the bedroom. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Pepe has mild dental disease and a minor wound on his paw.

Violet

Violet is at risk due to behavior concerns. Violet originally came to ACC as a stray. She displayed signs of deterioration then, hypersalivating and flipping her drain cover. She was adopted but recently returned due to destructive tendencies in the home and not being a good fit. Violet is once again struggling with the stress of the shelter environment. She has been observed to flip over the drain covers and kuranda bed in her kennel while hypersalivating. Outside of her kennel, Violet is a sociable dog who greatly enjoys treats and attention from humans. Medically, Violet has dental disease, is overweight, and being treated for pododermatitis on her front feet.

Silesia

Silesia is on the at risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Spyro

Spyro is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Upon intake, he was observed to be fearful and escalated to hard barking and lunging toward handlers. Throughout his stay at the care center, Spyro has shown some progress, warming up to handlers with a loose body. However, he occasionally reverts to fearful behaviors when meeting new people, such as hiding, pacing, and panicking. Medically, Spyro apparently healthy.

Tiger Eye

Tiger Eye is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Upon intake, he was tense bodied with a tucked tail, and lip licking, but with a slow approach he warms up quickly. Tiger Eye was brought to the Care Center due to being reactive towards a child in the home. His previous owners reported him to also be on-leash reactive towards strangers and unfamiliar dogs, escalating to hard barking and growling. In the care centers, he is social with handlers at times but has been reported to growl and lunge at both staff and members of the public on the street. Recently there was an incident where Tiger Eye possibly bit a MOP on the arm during his street walk, but there was no broken skin and handler had to use intense leash pressure to redirect him. When returning to kennel, he has been observed to baulk and muscle as to be used as he will escalate to mouthing handlers hands. Medically, Tiger Eye is apparently healthy.

Curacao

Curacao is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Initially upon intake, Curacao was displaying high level warnings of fear, stress, and anxiety as he was hard barking, baring teeth, and both dodging and mouthing the leash. With a slow approach, he has become social with handlers, soliciting pets, and allowing handling. On street walks, Curacao is noted to be hypervigilant of his surroundings, and remains both alert and tense when spotting other dogs. Recently, he has shown signs of deterioration as there have been reports of him jumping onto the kennel doors after he is returned to kennel, sometimes even digging/pawing at the door while barking. He has also been observed to charge the front of kennel and lunge at a staff members as enrichment/medication is distributed. Medically, he has an umbilical hernia.

Oliver is at risk due to medical reasons. Oliver is a senior cat with diabetes mellitus. His condition was well regulated in his previous home with insulin and a special diet. Behaviorally, he allows medical handling and can easily be given insulin. However, we cannot manage diabetes effectively in the shelter setting. Oliver needs urgent placement out of the shelter to keep his diabetes regulated.

Cameo needs urgent placement out of the shelter to keep his diabetes regulated.

Darla Doll

Darla Doll is on the at-risk due to behavior concerns. Darla Doll has been deteriorating in the care center despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Darla Doll has began to leash bite intensely, not being able to be refocused with treats or toys and has leash bit with a staff member resulting in the leash to be almost chewed through. Darla is social with staff but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Darla Doll is apparently healthy.

Pawlenta Soup

Pawlenta Soup is on the at-risk due to behavior concerns. Pawlenta Soup in care has not been acclimating well despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Pawlenta Soup has began to kennel fight with dogs when being removed from kennel, and in kennel begins to spin, lunge at the kennel door and hyper salivate. Medically, Pawlenta Soup is apparently healthy.

Millie

Mille is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Millie has not been acclimating to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Millie in kennel will display a flushed face, wide hard eyes, panting heavily and hard barking at staff when approached. Outside of kennel, Millie will kennel fighting with neighboring dogs when exiting kennel, pant heavily and is unable to settle on his own. Medically, Millie has superficial wounds.

Big Boy

Big Boy is being recommend for the at-risk list for medical reasons. Big Boy is a senior dog with heartworm disease. He also has a severe and chronic ear infection in his right ear that will likely need surgery (TECA) with placement. We are unable to treat and manage his conditions in shelter. Big Boy tolerated medical handling without reaction (including two blood draws and an ear cleaning).

Snowbert

Snowbert is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Snowbert in care has shown a significant amount of reactivity on leash towards strangers and children, and during an interaction with a staff member began to snarl, lunge and fixate on the staff member until they left the room. Snowbert has also been observed to hard bark and lunge at children in the care center, making it difficult to handle him safely. Medically, Snowbert has a mass on his right-hind leg.

Dior

Dior is at risk for behavior reasons. Dior has been leash-biting intensely when being removed from kennel, causing high concern for handlers safety. Once out of kennel and given time to calm down she is social and affectionate. She seeks attention and is soft when accepting treats outside of care center. Medically, Dior has a luxating patella, fractured upper canine tooth, but is otherwise healthy.

Mia

Mia is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Mia in the care center has been intensely fearful and shutdown, Mia will avoid interaction from most handlers, growling and seeking exit. Mia is improving in the care center, becoming more social with select handlers but still remains fearful in the care center despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Medically, Mia arrived with minor wounds to her feet and poor coat condition due to reported allergies. Mia was cleaned up and is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Mishu

Mishu is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Mishu is an obese cat with extremely high FAS in shelter. She is not eating well, has vomited a few times, and does not tolerate medical handling attempts to provide supportive care. She has an increased risk of developing hepatic lipidosis with prolonged anorexia due to her obesity. There is no obvious medical cause for her poor appetite and we suspect it is stress related.

Sweet Smoke

Sweet Smoke is at risk due to behavior concerns in care. Sweet Smoke has exhibited fearful and avoidant behaviors in the care center, showing reluctance to leave her kennel and resisting walks. She has displayed raising her hackles, whale eyeing, and barking at handlers when engaging with enrichment in kennel. While she has moments of social engagement, but still remains wary of handling. Sweet Smoke recently recovered from CIRDC.

McMeow is healing from an old wound.
