Animal Profile

Moochie

Hello, my name is Moochie. My animal id is #238640. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 5 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/6/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Moochie is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Moochie was recently returned from foster. Moochie is reported to have bitten the foster multiple times over resources. During her previous stay in care Moochie was observed to become tense while in the possession of a toy. Her previous owner also reports resource guarding. Her foster parent also noted handling sensitivity. Once when the handler attempted to remove her harness, Moochie escalated to snapping persistently. Medically, Moochie has dental disease and is currently in heat.

Medically, Moochie has dental disease and is currently in heat. My foster writes: Moochie wants to be where you are! She will curl up with you whether you're on the couch or sitting on the floor trying to put your shoes on. She thinks she's a lapdog and is a super snuggler, who basks in affection. When not cuddling, she's eager to play, and curious about everything and everybody. Moochie is intrigued by all the fun being had at a school playground we sometimes walk by, clearly wanting to join in and run after any balls. She also seems to have an affinity for street construction projects, eager to see what anyone is working on. A leaf blower? She wants to check it out. Sitting and staying still in Central Park can be challenging, as she's so interested in all the activity around her. While she dislikes the rain, she has been known to jump in the tub to try and join a shower. Moochie seems to consider every human and dog she passes or meets a friend, and if it were up to her, she'd have a full social calendar. During her time in foster, for the most part she left the resident cat alone, and, though up for playing, was generally calm around other dogs outside (pretty much ignoring some little ones who'd bark at her). She knows "sit" and is responsive to treats, but she does have issues with resource guarding and can get overly excited. Moochie needs someone with dog experience and patience, who can provide her with lots of exercise and enrichment.

Summary:: 3/22/26- Moochie gate greets another dog with a neutral body with a low wagging tail. She disengages and engages on her own with a softer body.

Summary (1):: A Volunteer Wrote: Moochie was so devoted to the cat she used to live with that she would sleep beside him at night, happily snoring away. She lived just as sweetly with two children, reveling in her toys, baths, and car rides, and her former owner says that her friendly, outgoing personality extends to other dogs, as well! In other words, this charming girl is the perfect company. As her former owner was surrendering Moochie, she said, "She doesn't like to be alone."

Summary (5):: 3/22/26: It is reported via the whiteboard that Moochie does not have resource guarding issues. Not sure who wrote the note or in what context they were reporting (food, toys, objects, etc). 11/1/25: Moochie is standing quietly with neutral frame, looking at handler with soft eyes as kennel door is unlocked. Moochie is easily leashed, exits kennel with minimal pulling. Moochie walks on sidewalk with neutral body, allows all petting gentle and exuberant and becomes wiggly bodied. Moochie ignores a SMB with MOP, walks with mostly loose leash, checks in with handler for verbal cues. Moochie re-enters MACC. On elevator Moochie sits when cued and continues to allow all petting. Moochie re-enters kennel without issue. 10/25/25: Moochie is laying in her kennel as handler approaches. She comes forward to the front and is comfortable taking treats and is leashed with ease. She is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she has a loose body and would approach the handler to retrieve treats. She would hard stare at dogs that were nearby and was able to be redirected with treats. She has no reactions to people and is able to return back to her kennel with no issues. 10/18/25: Moochie is standing quietly, in middle of kennel as handler approaches. As kennel door is unlocked, Moochie approaches with soft body, is easily leashed and exits kennel with loose leash. On elevator, Moochie allows all petting with soft body and becomes more loose, wagging tail while being pet. Moochie exits to sidewalk, walks with neutral body, is walking slowly but steady with loose leash. Moochie looks toward several MOPs that pass by with soft body, head turns briefly but is maintaining steady walking pace with handler. Moochie continues to allow gentle and exuberant petting by handler with loose body and wagging tail. Moochie is easily returned to MACC and kennel without issue. 10/11/25: Moochie is laying on her bed at the back of the kennel but comes forward as handler unlocks the kennel. She is neutral bodied. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. Moochie is walked on the street where she pulls moderately ahead of handler. She will walk forward, stop, look around then resume walking. She does this repeatedly throughout the walk. In the behavior room she approaches another handler with a soft body and climbs onto their lap. She is collared using a treat as distraction. She attempts to climb onto handlers laps again. She is easily returned to kennel.

Summary (6):: 02/08/26: Resource guarding (food, toys, space): Generally, FP took something away from her that she valued. The first incident she didn’t think she even saw her hand under the plastic bag she had her head in. Another time FP leaned in to kiss Moochie when she was right next to a toy. There was another incident when FP attempted to remove Moochie's harness, Moochie snapped and continued to snap at the FP Behavior in the Home House trained: Yes Crate trained: No Behavior in crate: Behavior when left alone (out of crate): Accidents in the house Destructive behavior (chewing or destroying items while home): Chewing. She does chew a lot, and doesn’t limit it to her chew toys. I imagine she’d benefit from more enrichment and exercise — we haven’t been going for long walks so I think she has a lot of pent-up energy. Training & Cues Known cues/commands: Sit/Stay Energy level / descriptors: Medium, She can be a couch potato for hours and is an excellent smuggler, but also can act like a puppy. She breaks into a run on walks sometimes, only slowed down by her human walker. She gets excited very easily. If she sees someone running or hears people talking, she wants to join in. Medical & Health Recent injuries or health issues: Just an ear infection, taken care of with meds. She has some continuing skin issues (chicken allergy?) and she is on a special diet. Current medications: None. For a New Family to Know: Moochie wants to be where you are! She will curl up with you whether you’re on the couch or sitting on the floor trying to put your shoes on. She thinks she’s a lapdog. Summary:: Body relaxed; easily examined

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have a limited history on Moochie so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children Under 13: Due to Moochie's resource guarding and bite history - we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During the toy portion of her assessment Moochie become tense and began intensely pulling toward the assess-a-hand. We recommend that Moochie be left alone while eating, and playing with toys, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized. Moochie has bitten three times in her foster home (no skin was broken but there was bruising). Two occurences were when Moochie was playing with a toy, the third is when her foster attempted to remove something from her mouth. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Moochie's mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive/Handling and Touch Sensitivty: Moochie is described by her former owners as shy and preferring contact on her own terms. She has also been observed to become tense during handling and her former owners report she will lunge when being touched near her paws. While in foster it is reported that Moochie lunged persistently at them when they attempted to remove a harness. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Moochie to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity and Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Multiple Bite History/Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On-Leash Reactive: Moochies former owners have reported that she will selectively react to and lunge toward people and dogs on leash. Moochie may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity. Leash Biting: It is reported that while in foster Moochie would jump up and bite the leash. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
