Date of intake:: 5/12/2025

Date of initial:: 5/13/2025

Summary:: loose and wiggly, responds to commands like sit and give paw.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Lotus is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Lotus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Lotus's poor bite inhibition, Lotus should go to an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Lotus was surrendered to the care center due to behavior concerns in the prior home. She showed poor impulse control and social hyperarousal, often becoming mouthy with limited bite inhibition. During play, she frequently nipped and became overstimulated, leading to increased mouthiness. Lotus has a documented bite history from a play session where she tried to grab a toy but missed, accidentally grabbing the skin instead. This resulted in a puncture wound on the previous adopter's arm, causing a bite that drew blood. Due to Lotus's poor bite inhibition, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Lotus is noted in her prior home when her treats are touched, she has a tense body and will hover over them. House soiling: Lotus s noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. See handout on House Soiling. Destructive behavior: Lotus is noted to chew on things in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior, but we suggest to future adopters that Lotus will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Social hyperarousal/Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: While she applies only light pressure, Lotus was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. In the prior home she is also noted to nip on the adopter's arms and is difficult to redirect and is also noted to take treats roughly. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. It’s important to reinforce gentle play and redirect her toward appropriate outlets like chew toys. Avoid rough play with hands and ensure all interactions teach her to use a softer mouth. Managing her excitement levels and rewarding calm behavior will help prevent this from becoming a habit as she matures. Bite history (human): During a play session, Lotus jumped to grab a toy but missed and accidentally grabbed the skin under the person’s arm instead, resulting in a puncture wound that broke the skin and drew blood. The wound was treated at home.
