Oreo-Cookie
Hello, my name is Oreo-Cookie. My animal id is #247125. I am a male black brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/14/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - abandoned by previous owner.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Date of assessment:: 2/17/2026
Summary:: 2/27/26:Oreo-Cookie is brought to the Behavior Office for a handling assessment. Once in the room, Oreo-cookie displays tucked tail and begins to clown grin, he begins to seek exit and stays near the exit door. When the assessor attempts to collar him, he begins to back away and head whip, displaying a low body. Oreo-cookie is tossed treats which he ignores and begins to displace sniff the floor. He is taken back to his kennel, due to this, a behavioral assessment will not be condcuted at this time. 2/17/26:Oreo-Cookie is brought to the Behavior Office for a handling assessment. Upon arrival, he presents with a tense body, a curved, semi-tucked tail, and avoids interaction with handlers. He focuses primarily on sniffing the environment and remains positioned near the exit door. When called over, he does not respond to the handlers and begins to display a clown grin. Due to these behaviors, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. 2/15 - Due to Oreo-Cookie growling in kennel; dodging in kennel. He is given more time to decompress.
Summary:: According to Oreo-Cookie's previous owner(s), he is playful around familiar dogs and will hard bark and growl at unfamiliar dogs both on and off leash. 02/18/26 Oreo-Cookie is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He readily approaches the gate with a neutral body and high tail as he sniffs the gate before walking away. He circles back to the gate again briefly but has the same response.
Summary (7):: 3/16/26: Oreo-Cookie is at the front of his kennel pacing back and forth through his transfer door as the handler approaches. They close the transfer door before leashing him. Oreo-Cookie will have a slightly tense frame and his ears pinned back throughout the walk but will loosen up as he sniffs various objects and surfaces, pulling towards each one. When returning to the care Center, Oreo-Cookie will pull harder and is secured safely in his kennel. 2/27/26: Oreo-Cookie is out on walk with an ACS staff member. He has a loose and wiggly body when approaching the new handler and is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he becomes tense with a tuck tail and would avoid the new handlers. He would lick cheese off the couch and then back away with a tense body when the handlers attempt to collar him. Due to fearfulness, his assessment is unable to be completed. He is then taken back to his kennel with no issues. 2/18/26 (PG): Oreo-Cookie is at the front of his kennel panting as the handler approaches the kennel. He is leashed with ease and will walk to the play yard with his tail tucked and ears pinned but will loosen up and approach the gate with a high tail (see dog-dog for more information). He is then returned to his kennel with no issue. 2/17/26 (assessment): Oreo-Cookie is at the front of his kennel with a tense frame. He will wag his tail slightly as the handler opens the door to leash him. He is eager to come out at the door and is leased with ease but once out, Oreo-Cookie will skitter along the floor as he is startled by the barking dogs in the room. He will walk to the behavior office where his FAS is too high to conduct an assessment. He will avoid the collar and does not engage with the handlers. Oreo-Cookie is returned to his kennel where is secured safely. (see assessment for more details) 02/15/26(Assessment Note): Oreo Cookie is low growling in his kennel and head whips during leashing. He attempts to flee but is successfully leashed. In the assessment room, he paces and avoids handlers. He does not take treats and requires additional time to acclimate before assessment can proceed. Oreo Cookie is returned to his kennel safely. See Behavioral Assessment for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Oreo-Cookie is placed in an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Oreo-Cookie has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling:Oreo-Cookie's previous owner stated he had many accidents daily because they could not walk him. A consistent potty routine, frequent outdoor opportunities, and reinforcing successful elimination outside would be essential for improving his house-training reliability. Please see the handout on House soiling. Resource guarding: When around items that he considers valuable such as toys, food as well as treats he will stand with a tense body or will hover over the items, growl or hard barks and will attempt to snap.Training should focus on trade-up exercises, predictable handling around high-value items, and reinforcing voluntary disengagement to reduce guarding responses. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression:Oreo-Cookie will not allow his owner/family to bathe and brush him due to being fearful and/or uncomfortable. He will not allow his owner to trim nails due to being fearful and/or uncomfortable. He pulls really hard on the leash. He is fearful of loud noises (ex. storms/thunder, fireworks, arguments). When held/restrained, disturbed while resting/sleeping, startled and pushed/pulled off of furniture Oreo-Cookie will bark/growl. Training should emphasize slow, choice-based handling, gradual desensitization to grooming tasks, and creating positive associations with touch and movement. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration:Oreo-Cookie will hard bark and/or growl at strangers as well as visitors. Oreo-Cookie will hard bark and/or growl around unfamiliar dogs both on and off the leash.Training should focus on increasing distance from triggers, teaching alternative focus behaviors, and gradually counter-conditioning him to unfamiliar people and dogs to reduce reactivity. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Separation anxiety: he is also anxious when being left home alone. Structured departure routines, independence-building exercises, and calming enrichment can help reduce his distress during separation. Please see the handout Separation Anxiety. Leash-biting: Oreo-Cookie will jump up and try to bite the leash during walks.Training should include lowering arousal before exiting the home, reinforcing calm focus, and redirecting leash-biting with high-value treats or alternative behaviors. Please see the handout Leash-biting. Strength/leash pulling: He pulls really hard on the leash. His training will center on teaching loose-leash walking skills, rewarding moments of slack in the leash, and using structured exercises to encourage engagement with the handler. Consistency and the use of appropriate walking equipment will support safer, more enjoyable outings. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Kennel presence: growling in kennel; dodging in kennel
