Animal Profile

Lola

Hello, my name is Lola. My animal id is #224590. I am a desexed female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/15/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Lola is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Lola has been observed to be dog reactive during her stay in the care center. When further into the kennel room Lola was observed to cage fight intensely with the neighboring dogs. Hard barking and lunging towards them and coming close to the handlers legs. Due to this behavior Lola was relocated to the front kennel in the room. Lola's previous owner also stated that she will hard bark and lunge towards dogs. In kennel, Lola has been observed to be barking constantly towards people and dogs that are passing by her kennel. She has also been observed to be heavily panting and vocalizing with her face pressed against the kennel door. Medically Lola is apparently healthy.

I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

Summary (6):: 5/9/25: Lola is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and she pulls hard out of kennel and on the way to the yard. In the yard, she would play fetch back and forth with tennis balls. She would lay down on the ground and chew on them until the handler threw another one for her. She would stare at dogs and people that would pass by the pen. She is able to be distracted when the handler tosses the ball again. She is able to be taken back to her kennel with no issues 5/7/25: Lola is observed to be heavily panting and vocalizing with her face pressed against the kennel door. 5/2/25: Lola is standing at the front of the kennel with neutral body. She is easily leashed using a treat as lure and brought to the street for a walk. She pulls hard ahead of handler, zig zagging back and forth sometimes stopping to smell. She will come to handler when called and offered a treat for responding. Otherwise she is aloof not seeking handler attention. When people pass her she pulls hard towards them, nose outstretched. She returns to kennel without issue. 4/25/25: Lola is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is comfortable taking treats and begins to jump up as the handler unlocks the door. She is able to be leashed with ease and she pulls hard out of kennel and on the way to the yard. In the yard, she is able to be transferred to a drag leash and liked to chase after treats the handler would toss for her. She would sit for the treats as well. She would play fetch back and forth with all the tennis balls that were in the pen. She would reproach the handler and dorp one to chase after the other. When she started to get tired, she would still chase after them when the handler threw them, but then lay flat on the ground and chew on them. She would hover over the balls when she was close by the handler. She is able to be releashed and taken back to her kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 4/25/25: Lola is observed to constantly bark at the front door of her kennel door as people constantly walk by her kennel room and when other dogs are coming in and out of the room. 04/17/25: Lola is at the front of her kennel sitting down as handler approaches. She is leashed while distracted with treats, handler prepares another treat for her to follow out of kennel and handler tosses it on the ground in view of Lola as she exits kennel. She ignores the treat and begins vocalizing as she pulls hard toward the dogs as she passes. She lunges toward the kennel right in front of handlers leg so she is straight armed out the room and into the hall, she is taken to the street for her walk, during which she pulls mildly and walks past people without issue. Lola spots a dog toward the end of her walk and looks at them while lip licking but continues walking. She's brought to the behavior office for her assessment where she is tense and whale eyes when being clipped. She allows petting but pants frequently during the process and is observed barking and whining when assessor leaves the room. She is placed in a different kennel when returning in the front of the room to avoid further kennel reactivity. She is hesitant to enter kennel but with moderate pressure enters without issue. 4/17/25: Lola is standing at the front of her kennel with a tense body and whale eye as handler approaches. She does not take any treats offered and remains tense as handler opens the door. She presses her nose up against the door as it's cracked open and tries to force her way out. Handler is able to place a slip lead over her head as she does so and brings her out of the kennel with ease. Once out of the kennel, Lola immediately starts to kennel fight, hard barking and lunging towards dogs in neighboring kennels. Handler keeps her on a short leash and pulls her to the wall, using a moderate amount of muscle to keep her away from the kennels as they exit the room. After they exit the kennel room, Lola is brought to medical, where she shakes off but maintains a tense body. There is a lot of activity in the room, and Lola remains tense with a tucked tail as handler approaches her to place an identiband. A muzzle is placed as a precaution, and though she remains tense throughout handling, Lola allows an identiband to be placed. Handler brings her out to the street for a walk, and Lola relaxes some, untucking her tail and exploring her surroundings while pulling moderately on leash. She remains hypervigilant throughout the walk and flinches at loud noises. Lola is aloof with handler and will glance at them when they call her name but quickly returns to sniffing the sidewalk. She does not take treats or solicit attention throughout the walk. Lola is brought back into the care center and is tense and whale eyed when handler goes to clip her leash, but ultimately allows clipping. She is brought back to her kennel without issue.

Summary:: Neutral body, began barking towards handler

Date of initial:: 4/15/2025

Summary:: Hard barking, tense body

ENERGY LEVEL:: Lola is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity with the potential for redirection we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to vocalizing and lunging towards dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Lola's owner states that she is not house trained. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Fearful Defensive: During intake Lola was observed to begin barking towards the handler. During her assessment Lola was observed to have a tense body during contact. It is important to move slowly with Lola, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On leash reactivity: Lola has been observed to vocalize and lunge towards the other dogs in the kennel room coming close to the handlers leg. This behavior is not able to be redirected suing treats. Her previous owner states that she may bark or lunge towards other dogs. Lola will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
