Animal Profile

Oreo

Hello, my name is Oreo. My animal id is #265814. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 13 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 9/18/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Oreo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him/her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/27/26 FB79 Inside of his den, i enter to lift the den cover to give Oreo a better look at the light show i set up in the room but he was tense with his body crouched and back arched high. I spoke to him softly while slow blinking but he remained tense and wide eyed. Didnt rlly care for the light show as he kept his gaze on me. I covered his den and left him some treats for later. 9/29/26 FB25 Oreo remained inside his den and was not interested in coming out today. When I lifted the den cover, he was curled up with very tense body language. I did not push further interaction and left him a dish of treats to hopefully enjoy later. 10/05/26 FB47 Oreo is in his den. I open the kennel door and greet him, no response. I sit in front of the kennel with the door open and prepare a treat tray. Oreo emerges from the den and sits next to it. I retrieved the scratcher tool. He leans in deeply to head and neck pets. I give him some dry treats which he happily eats while receiving pets. He purrs quietly. He tolerates full body pets with the tool. WOW he really loves catnip. 10/19/26 FB47 Oreo is in his flip bed. When I approach the kennel he quickly scrambles out. His face and body remain relaxed as I open the kennel door. I greet him verbally and he begins to purr with anticipation. Oreo accepts and appreciates head and neck pets leaning in and closing his eyes. He accepts full body pets. With prolonged interaction his tail begins to sway in frustration, he wants to leave the kennel to explore the room. Oreo is given a treat puzzle (filled with hard treats) which he quickly digs into.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of the den, Oreo can he heard moving around when the assessor entered the kennel; when he is spoken to he pokes his head out slightly and had a neutral face with soft eyes and forward ears. However he hissed when the assessor started to get closer in attempt to conduct petting with the tool. As the tool was held still for a few moments he leaned out a bit more to sniff it but lip licked followed by snapping his head back when it was moved close to touch him. He retreated into the den fully and could be heard hissing harshly - the den cover was lifted and Oreo was tense in the den with his back arched and his tail slightly swaying while he lip licked over and over. The assessor spoke softly while bringing the tool close and Oreo briefly tolerated pets before leaning down to hiss at it with a lifted paw. Pick up was not attempted at this time. Oreo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He does not currently tolerate petting or handling. he behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
